1 U na buona reputazione è preferibile a grandi ricchezze, e la grazia all'argento e all'oro.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, And loving favor rather than silver and gold.

2 I l ricco e il povero hanno questo in comune: l'Eterno li ha fatti entrambi.

The rich and the poor meet together: Jehovah is the maker of them all.

3 L 'uomo accorto vede il male e si nasconde; ma i semplici vanno oltre e sono puniti.

A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; But the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

4 I l premio dell'umiltà è il timore dell'Eterno, la ricchezza, la gloria e la vita.

The reward of humility and the fear of Jehovah Is riches, and honor, and life.

5 S pine e lacci sono sulla via del perverso; chi ha cura della propria vita se ne sta lontano.

Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse: He that keepeth his soul shall be far from them.

6 A mmaestra il fanciullo sulla via da seguire, ed egli non se ne allontanerà neppure quando sarà vecchio.

Train up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old he will not depart from it.

7 I l ricco signoreggia sui poveri, e chi prende in prestito è schiavo di chi presta.

The rich ruleth over the poor; And the borrower is servant to the lender.

8 C hi semina iniquità raccoglierà guai, e la verga della sua collera sarà annientata.

He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity; And the rod of his wrath shall fail.

9 L 'uomo dallo sguardo benevolo sarà benedetto, perché dà del suo pane al povero.

He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; For he giveth of his bread to the poor.

10 C accia via lo schernitore e se ne andranno pure le contese; sí, le liti e gli insulti cesseranno.

Cast out the scoffer, and contention will go out; Yea, strife and ignominy will cease.

11 C hi ama la purezza di cuore e ha grazia sulle labbra avrà il re per amico.

He that loveth pureness of heart, For the grace of his lips the king will be his friend.

12 G li occhi dell'Eterno custodiscono la conoscenza, ma egli rende vane le parole del perfido.

The eyes of Jehovah preserve him that hath knowledge; But he overthroweth the words of the treacherous man.

13 I l pigro dice «Fuori c'è un leone sarò ucciso per la strada».

The sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be slain in the streets.

14 L a bocca della donna adultera è una fossa profonda, colui che è in ira all'Eterno vi cadrà.

The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: He that is abhorred of Jehovah shall fall therein.

15 L a follia è legata al cuore del fanciullo, ma la verga della correzione l'allontanerà da lui.

Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

16 C hi opprime il povero per arricchirsi e chi dà al ricco, certamente impoverirà.

He that oppresseth the poor to increase his gain, And he that giveth to the rich, shall come only to want.

17 P orgi l'orecchio e ascolta le parole dei saggi, e applica il cuore alla mia conoscenza,

Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, And apply thy heart unto my knowledge.

18 p erché ti sarà dolce custodirle nel tuo intimo e averle tutte pronte sulle tue labbra.

For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, If they be established together upon thy lips.

19 A ffinché la tua fiducia sia riposta nell'Eterno, oggi ti ho ammaestrato, sí, proprio te.

That thy trust may be in Jehovah, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee.

20 N on ti ho in passato scritto detti di consiglio e conoscenza,

Have not I written unto thee excellent things Of counsels and knowledge,

21 p er farti conoscere la certezza delle parole di verità, affinché tu possa rispondere con parole di verità a quelli che ti mandano?

To make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, That thou mayest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?

22 N on derubare il povero, perché è povero, e non opprimere il misero alla porta,

Rob not the poor, because he is poor; Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

23 p erché l'Eterno difenderà la loro causa e spoglierà della vita quelli che li hanno spogliati.

For Jehovah will plead their cause, And despoil of life those that despoil them.

24 N on fare amicizia con l'uomo iracondo e non andare con l'uomo collerico,

Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; And with a wrathful man thou shalt not go:

25 p er non imparare le sue vie e procurarti un laccio per la tua anima.

Lest thou learn this ways, And get a snare to thy soul.

26 N on essere di quelli che danno la mano come garanzia, che si fanno garanti per debiti altrui.

Be thou not one of them that strike hands, Or of them that are sureties for debts.

27 S e non hai nulla con cui pagare perché dovrebbe portarti via il letto sotto a te?

If thou hast not wherewith to pay, Why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

28 N on spostare il confine antico, posto dai tuoi padri.

Remove not the ancient landmark, Which thy fathers have set.

29 H ai visto un uomo sollecito nel suo lavoro? Egli comparirà alla presenza dei re e non resterà davanti a gente oscura.

Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men.
