1 N el ventitreesimo anno di Ioas, figlio di Acazia, re di Giuda, Ioacaz, figlio di Ieu, cominciò a regnare sopra Israele a Samaria. Regnò diciassette anni.

In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned seventeen years.

2 E gli fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, imitò i peccati con i quali Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, aveva fatto peccare Israele e non se ne allontanò.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

3 L ’ira del Signore si accese contro gli Israeliti, ed egli li diede nelle mani di Azael, re di Siria, e nelle mani di Ben-Adad, figlio di Azael, per tutto quel tempo.

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael, continually.

4 M a Ioacaz implorò il Signore e il Signore lo esaudì, perché vide l’oppressione sotto la quale il re di Siria teneva Israele.

And Jehoahaz besought Jehovah, and Jehovah hearkened unto him; for he saw the oppression of Israel, how that the king of Syria oppressed them.

5 I l Signore diede un liberatore agli Israeliti, i quali riuscirono a sottrarsi al potere dei Siri, in modo che i figli d’Israele poterono abitare nelle loro tende, come prima.

(And Jehovah gave Israel a saviour, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians; and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents as beforetime.

6 M a non si allontanarono dai peccati con i quali la casa di Geroboamo aveva fatto peccare Israele; e continuarono a camminare per quella via; persino l’idolo di Astarte rimase in piedi a Samaria.

Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, wherewith he made Israel to sin, but walked therein: and there remained the Asherah also in Samaria.)

7 D i tutta la sua gente, a Ioacaz, il Signore non aveva lasciato che cinquanta cavalieri, dieci carri e diecimila fanti, perché il re di Siria li aveva distrutti e li aveva ridotti come la polvere che si calpesta.

For he left not to Jehoahaz of the people save fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Syria destroyed them, and made them like the dust in threshing.

8 I l resto delle azioni di Ioacaz, tutto quello che fece e tutte le sue prodezze, sono scritte nel libro delle Cronache dei re d’Israele.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

9 I oacaz si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto a Samaria; e Ioas, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto. Ioas, re d’Israele; morte di Eliseo

And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria: and Joash his son reigned in his stead.

10 N el trentasettesimo anno di Ioas, re di Giuda, Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, cominciò a regnare sopra Israele a Samaria, e regnò sedici anni.

In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years.

11 E gli fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore e non si allontanò da nessuno dei peccati con i quali Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, aveva fatto peccare Israele, ma seguì la stessa strada.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah; he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; but he walked therein.

12 I l resto delle azioni di Ioas, tutto quello che fece e il valore con il quale combatté contro Amasia, re di Giuda, sono scritte nel libro delle Cronache dei re d’Israele.

Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might wherewith he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

13 I oas si addormentò con i suoi padri e Geroboamo salì sul trono di lui. E Ioas fu sepolto a Samaria con i re d’Israele.

And Joash slept with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat upon his throne: and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

14 E liseo si ammalò di una malattia che doveva condurlo alla morte; e Ioas, re d’Israele, scese a trovarlo, pianse su di lui e disse: «Padre mio, padre mio! Carro e cavalleria d’Israele!»

Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died: and Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over him, and said, My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof!

15 E liseo gli disse: «Prendi un arco e delle frecce». E Ioas prese un arco e delle frecce.

And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows; and he took unto him bow and arrows.

16 E liseo disse al re d’Israele: «Impugna l’arco». Egli impugnò l’arco; Eliseo posò le sue mani sulle mani del re,

And he said to the king of Israel, Put thy hand upon the bow; and he put his hand upon it. And Elisha laid his hands upon the king's hands.

17 p oi gli disse: «Apri la finestra a oriente». E Ioas l’aprì. Allora Eliseo disse: «Tira!» Egli tirò. Ed Eliseo disse: «Questa è una freccia di vittoria da parte del Signore: la freccia della vittoria contro la Siria. Tu sconfiggerai i Siri ad Afec sino a sterminarli».

And he said, Open the window eastward; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot; and he shot. And he said, Jehovah's arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Syria; for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.

18 P oi disse: «Prendi le frecce». Ioas le prese, ed Eliseo disse al re d’Israele: «Percuoti il suolo». Egli lo percosse tre volte, poi si fermò.

And he said, Take the arrows; and he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground; and he smote thrice, and stayed.

19 L ’uomo di Dio si adirò contro di lui e disse: «Avresti dovuto percuoterlo cinque o sei volte; allora tu avresti sconfitto i Siri fino a sterminarli; mentre adesso non li sconfiggerai che tre volte». Eliseo morì e fu sepolto.

And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times: then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it, whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.

20 L ’anno seguente delle bande di Moabiti fecero una scorreria nel paese.

And Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year.

21 M entre alcune persone stavano seppellendo un morto, scorsero una di quelle bande e gettarono la salma nella tomba di Eliseo. Appena toccò le ossa di Eliseo, il morto risuscitò e si alzò in piedi.

And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

22 A zael, re di Siria, aveva oppresso gli Israeliti durante tutta la vita di Ioacaz;

And Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.

23 m a il Signore fece loro grazia, ne ebbe compassione e fu loro favorevole a causa del suo patto con Abraamo, con Isacco e con Giacobbe, e non li volle distruggere; e, fino a ora, non li ha respinti dalla sua presenza.

But Jehovah was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.

24 A zael, re di Siria, morì, e Ben-Adad, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.

And Hazael king of Syria died; and Benhadad his son reigned in his stead.

25 E Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, riprese a Ben-Adad, figlio di Azael, le città che Azael aveva conquistate in guerra a Ioacaz suo padre. Ioas lo sconfisse tre volte e ricuperò così le città d’Israele.

And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash smite him, and recovered the cities of Israel.
