1 P oi tutta la comunità dei figli d’Israele partì dal deserto di Sin, marciando a tappe secondo gli ordini del Signore. Si accampò a Refidim, ma non c’era acqua da bere per il popolo.

And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their journeys, according to the commandment of Jehovah, and encamped in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

2 A llora il popolo protestò contro Mosè e disse: «Dacci dell’acqua da bere». Mosè rispose loro: «Perché protestate contro di me? Perché tentate il Signore ?»

Wherefore the people stove with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why strive ye with me? Wherefore do ye tempt Jehovah?

3 L à il popolo patì la sete e mormorò contro Mosè, dicendo: «Perché ci hai fatto uscire dall’Egitto per far morire di sete noi, i nostri figli e il nostro bestiame?»

And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

4 M osè gridò al Signore, dicendo: «Che cosa devo fare per questo popolo? Ancora un po’, e mi lapideranno».

And Moses cried unto Jehovah, saying, What shall I do unto this people? They are almost ready to stone me.

5 A llora il Signore disse a Mosè: «Mettiti di fronte al popolo e prendi con te alcuni degli anziani d’Israele; prendi anche in mano il bastone col quale hai percosso il Fiume e va’.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Pass on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and they rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thy hand, and go.

6 E cco io starò là davanti a te, sulla roccia che è in Oreb; tu colpirai la roccia: ne scaturirà dell’acqua e il popolo berrà». Mosè fece così in presenza degli anziani d’Israele,

Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

7 e a quel luogo mise il nome di Massa e Meriba a causa della protesta dei figli d’Israele, e perché avevano tentato il Signore, dicendo: «Il Signore è in mezzo a noi, sì o no?» Vittoria su Amalec

And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tempted Jehovah, saying, Is Jehovah among us, or not?

8 A llora venne Amalec per combattere contro Israele a Refidim.

Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

9 E Mosè disse a Giosuè: «Scegli per noi alcuni uomini ed esci a combattere contro Amalec; domani io starò sulla vetta del colle con il bastone di Dio in mano».

And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to-morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.

10 G iosuè fece come Mosè gli aveva detto e combatté contro Amalec; e Mosè, Aaronne e Cur salirono sulla vetta del colle.

So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11 E quando Mosè teneva le mani alzate, Israele vinceva; e quando le abbassava, vinceva Amalec.

And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

12 M a le mani di Mosè si facevano pesanti. Allora essi presero una pietra, gliela posero sotto ed egli si sedette; Aaronne e Cur gli tenevano le mani alzate, uno da una parte e l’altro dall’altra. Così le sue mani rimasero ferme fino al tramonto del sole.

But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; And his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

13 E Giosuè sconfisse Amalec e la sua gente passandoli a fil di spada.

And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 I l Signore disse a Mosè: «Scrivi questo fatto in un libro, perché se ne conservi il ricordo, e fa’ sapere a Giosuè che io cancellerò interamente sotto il cielo la memoria di Amalec».

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

15 A llora Mosè costruì un altare che chiamò «il Signore è la mia bandiera»; e disse:

And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi;

16 « Una mano s’è alzata contro il trono del Signore, perciò il Signore farà guerra ad Amalec di generazione in generazione».

And he said, Jehovah hath sworn: Jehovah will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
