1 A llora Giobbe rispose e disse:

Then Job answered and said,

2 « Anche oggi il mio lamento è una rivolta, per quanto io cerchi di contenere il mio gemito.

Even to-day is my complaint rebellious: My stroke is heavier than my groaning.

3 O h, sapessi dove trovarlo! Potessi arrivare fino al suo trono!

Oh that I knew where I might find him! That I might come even to his seat!

4 E sporrei la mia causa davanti a lui, riempirei d’argomenti la mia bocca.

I would set my cause in order before him, And fill my mouth with arguments.

5 S aprei quel che mi risponderebbe, capirei quello che avrebbe da dirmi.

I would know the words which he would answer me, And understand what he would say unto me.

6 I mpiegherebbe tutta la sua forza per combattermi? No, egli mi ascolterebbe!

Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? Nay; but he would give heed unto me.

7 L à troverebbe un uomo retto a discutere con lui, e sarei dal mio giudice assolto per sempre.

There the upright might reason with him; So should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

8 M a ecco, se vado a oriente, egli non c’è; se a occidente, non lo trovo;

Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; And backward, but I cannot perceive him;

9 s e a settentrione, quando vi opera, io non lo vedo; si nasconde egli a sud, io non lo scorgo.

On the left hand, when he doth work, but I cannot behold him; He hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him.

10 M a la via che io batto egli la conosce; se mi mettesse alla prova, ne uscirei come l’oro.

But he knoweth the way that I take; When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

11 I l mio piede ha seguito fedelmente le sue orme, mi sono tenuto sulla sua via senza deviare;

My foot hath held fast to his steps; His way have I kept, and turned not aside.

12 n on mi sono scostato dai comandamenti delle sue labbra, ho custodito nel mio cuore le parole della sua bocca.

I have not gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured up the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

13 M a la sua decisione è una; chi lo farà mutare? Quello che desidera, lo fa;

But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? And what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.

14 e gli eseguirà quel che di me ha decretato; di cose come queste ne ha molte in mente.

For he performeth that which is appointed for me: And many such things are with him.

15 P erciò davanti a lui io sono atterrito; quando ci penso, ho paura di lui.

Therefore am I terrified at his presence; When I consider, I am afraid of him.

16 D io mi ha tolto il coraggio, l’Onnipotente mi ha spaventato.

For God hath made my heart faint, And the Almighty hath terrified me;

17 Q uesto mi annienta; non le tenebre, non la fitta oscurità che mi ricopre.

Because I was not cut off before the darkness, Neither did he cover the thick darkness from my face.
