1 I n quel tempo Erode il tetrarca udì la fama di Gesù

At that season Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,

2 e disse ai suoi servitori: «Costui è Giovanni il battista! Egli è risuscitato dai morti; perciò agiscono in lui le potenze miracolose».

and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore do these powers work in him.

3 P oiché Erode aveva arrestato Giovanni, lo aveva incatenato e messo in prigione a motivo di Erodiade, moglie di Filippo suo fratello;

For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.

4 G iovanni infatti gli diceva: «Non ti è lecito averla».

For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

5 E benché desiderasse farlo morire, temeva la folla, perché lo considerava un profeta.

And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

6 G iunto il compleanno di Erode, la figlia di Erodiade ballò nel convito e piacque a Erode;

But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod.

7 e d egli promise con giuramento di darle tutto quello che avrebbe richiesto.

Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she should ask.

8 E lla, spintavi da sua madre, disse: «Dammi qui, su un piatto, la testa di Giovanni il battista».

And she, being put forward by her mother, saith, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

9 I l re, sebbene rattristato, a motivo dei giuramenti e degli invitati comandò che le fosse data,

And the king was grieved; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat with him, he commanded it to be given;

10 e mandò a decapitare Giovanni in prigione.

and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.

11 L a sua testa fu portata su un piatto e data alla fanciulla, che la portò a sua madre.

And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

12 E i suoi discepoli andarono a prenderne il corpo e lo seppellirono; poi vennero a informare Gesù. Moltiplicazione dei pani per cinquemila uomini

And his disciples came, and took up the corpse, and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

13 U dito ciò, Gesù si ritirò di là in barca verso un luogo deserto, in disparte; le folle, saputolo, lo seguirono a piedi dalle città.

Now when Jesus heard it, he withdrew from thence in a boat, to a desert place apart: and when the multitudes heard thereof, they followed him on foot from the cities.

14 s montato dalla barca, vide una gran folla; ne ebbe compassione e ne guarì gli ammalati.

And he came forth, and saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

15 F acendosi sera, i discepoli si avvicinarono a lui e gli dissero: «Il luogo è deserto e l’ora è già passata; congeda la folla, affinché possa andare nei villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare».

And when even was come, the disciples came to him, saying, The place is desert, and the time is already past; send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.

16 M a {Gesù} disse loro: «Non hanno bisogno di andarsene; date loro voi da mangiare!»

But Jesus said unto them, They have no need to go away; give ye them to eat.

17 E ssi gli risposero: «Non abbiamo qui altro che cinque pani e due pesci».

And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

18 E gli disse: «Portatemeli qua».

And he said, Bring them hither to me.

19 D opo aver ordinato alla folla di accomodarsi sull’erba, prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi verso il cielo, pronunciò la benedizione; poi, spezzati i pani, li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli alla folla.

And he commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.

20 T utti mangiarono e furono sazi; e si raccolsero, dei pezzi avanzati, dodici ceste piene.

And they all ate, and were filled: and they took up that which remained over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.

21 E quelli che avevano mangiato erano circa cinquemila uomini, oltre alle donne e ai bambini. Gesù cammina sul mare; guarigioni a Gennesaret

And they that did eat were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

22 S ubito dopo, obbligò i discepoli a salire sulla barca e a precederlo sull’altra riva, mentre egli avrebbe congedato la folla.

And straightway he constrained the disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before him unto the other side, till he should send the multitudes away.

23 D opo aver congedato la folla, salì sul monte in disparte a pregare. E, venuta la sera, rimase là da solo.

And after he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray: and when even was come, he was there alone.

24 F rattanto la barca, già di molti stadi lontana da terra, era sbattuta dalle onde perché il vento era contrario.

But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves; for the wind was contrary.

25 M a alla quarta vigilia della notte andò verso di loro, camminando sul mare.

And in the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea.

26 E i discepoli, vedendolo camminare sul mare, si turbarono e dissero: «È un fantasma!» E dalla paura gridarono.

And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a ghost; and they cried out for fear.

27 M a subito {Gesù} parlò loro e disse: «Coraggio, sono io; non abbiate paura!»

But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28 P ietro gli rispose: «Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire da te sull’acqua».

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto the upon the waters.

29 E gli disse: «Vieni!» E Pietro, sceso dalla barca, camminò sull’acqua e andò verso Gesù.

And he said, Come. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked upon the waters to come to Jesus.

30 M a vedendo il vento {forte} ebbe paura e, cominciando ad affondare, gridò: «Signore, salvami!»

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.

31 S ubito Gesù, stesa la mano, lo afferrò e gli disse: «Uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?»

And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and saith unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32 E , quando furono saliti sulla barca, il vento si calmò.

And when they were gone up into the boat, the wind ceased.

33 A llora quelli che erano nella barca lo adorarono, dicendo: «Veramente tu sei Figlio di Dio!»

And they that were in the boat worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

34 P assati all’altra riva, vennero nel paese di Gennesaret.

And when they had crossed over, they came to the land, unto Gennesaret.

35 E la gente di quel luogo, riconosciuto Gesù, diffuse la notizia per tutta la regione circostante, e gli presentarono tutti i malati

And when the men of that place knew him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought unto him all that were sick,

36 e lo pregavano che lasciasse loro toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste; e tutti quelli che lo toccarono furono guariti.

and they besought him that they might only touch the border of his garment: and as many as touched were made whole.
