1 A scoltate quindi ciò che dice il Signore: «Àlzati, contendi con le montagne, i colli odano la tua voce!

Hear ye now what Jehovah saith: Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.

2 A scoltate, o monti, la causa del Signore! Anche voi, salde fondamenta della terra! Poiché il Signore contende con il suo popolo e vuole discutere con Israele.

Hear, O ye mountains, Jehovah's controversy, and ye enduring foundations of the earth; for Jehovah hath a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel.

3 P opolo mio, che ti ho fatto? In che cosa ti ho stancato? Testimonia pure contro di me!

O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.

4 S ono io infatti che ti ho condotto fuori dal paese d’Egitto, ti ho liberato dalla casa di schiavitù, ho mandato davanti a te Mosè, Aaronne e Miriam.

For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of bondage; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

5 R icorda dunque, popolo mio, quel che tramava Balac, re di Moab, e che cosa gli rispose Balaam, figlio di Beor, da Sittim a Ghilgal, affinché tu riconosca la giustizia del Signore ».

O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him; remember from Shittim unto Gilgal, that ye may know the righteous acts of Jehovah.

6 C on che cosa verrò in presenza del Signore e mi inchinerò davanti al Dio eccelso? Verrò in sua presenza con olocausti, con vitelli di un anno?

Wherewith shall I come before Jehovah, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves a year old?

7 G radirà il Signore le migliaia di montoni, le miriadi di fiumi d’olio? Dovrò offrire il mio primogenito per la mia trasgressione, il frutto delle mie viscere per il mio peccato?

will Jehovah be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

8 O uomo, egli ti ha fatto conoscere ciò che è bene; che altro richiede da te il Signore, se non che tu pratichi la giustizia, che tu ami la misericordia e cammini umilmente con il tuo Dio?

He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth Jehovah require of thee, but to do justly, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with thy God?

9 L a voce del Signore grida alla città, chi ha senno teme il tuo nome. «Ascoltate la minaccia del castigo e colui che lo manda!

The voice of Jehovah crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom will see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

10 C i sono ancora, nella casa dell’empio, tesori illecitamente acquistati e l’efa scarso, che è cosa abominevole?

Are there yet treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and a scant measure that is abominable?

11 S arei io puro se tollerassi bilance false e il sacchetto dei pesi falsi?

Shall I be pure with wicked balances, and with a bag of deceitful weights?

12 I ricchi della città sono pieni di violenza, i suoi abitanti affermano il falso e la loro lingua non è che inganno nella loro bocca.

For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

13 P erciò anch’io ti colpirò, ti produrrò gravi ferite e ti devasterò a causa dei tuoi peccati.

Therefore I also have smitten thee with a grievous wound; I have made thee desolate because of thy sins.

14 T u mangerai, ma senza saziarti, e la fame ti rimarrà dentro; porterai via, ma non salverai, e ciò che avrai salvato lo darò in balìa della spada.

Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy humiliation shall be in the midst of thee: and thou shalt put away, but shalt not save; and that which thou savest will I give up to the sword.

15 T u seminerai, ma non mieterai; spremerai le olive, ma non ti ungerai con l’olio; farai colare il mosto, ma non berrai il vino.

Thou shalt sow, but shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but shalt not anoint thee with oil; and the vintage, but shalt not drink the wine.

16 S i osservano con cura gli statuti di Omri e tutte le pratiche della casa di Acab; tu cammini seguendo i loro consigli, perché io abbandoni te alla desolazione e i tuoi abitanti allo scherno! Tu porterai l’infamia del mio popolo!»

For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I may make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof a hissing: and ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
