1 « Guardatevi dal praticare la vostra giustizia davanti agli uomini, per essere osservati da loro; altrimenti non ne avrete premio presso il Padre vostro che è nei cieli.

Take heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them: else ye have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

2 Q uando dunque fai l’elemosina, non far suonare la tromba davanti a te, come fanno gli ipocriti nelle sinagoghe e nelle strade, per essere onorati dagli uomini. Io vi dico in verità che questo è il premio che ne hanno.

When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

3 M a quando tu fai l’elemosina, non sappia la tua sinistra quel che fa la destra,

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4 a ffinché la tua elemosina sia fatta in segreto; e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa. Istruzioni di Gesù sulla preghiera

that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.

5 « Quando pregate, non siate come gli ipocriti; poiché essi amano pregare stando in piedi nelle sinagoghe e agli angoli delle piazze per essere visti dagli uomini. Io vi dico in verità che questo è il premio che ne hanno.

And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites: for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

6 M a tu, quando preghi, entra nella tua cameretta e, chiusa la porta, rivolgi la preghiera al Padre tuo che è nel segreto; e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thine inner chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.

7 N el pregare non usate troppe parole come fanno i pagani, i quali pensano di essere esauditi per il gran numero delle loro parole.

And in praying use not vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

8 N on fate dunque come loro, poiché il Padre vostro sa le cose di cui avete bisogno, prima che gliele chiediate.

Be not therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

9 V oi dunque pregate così: “Padre nostro che sei nei cieli, sia santificato il tuo nome;

After this manner therefore pray ye. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 v enga il tuo regno; sia fatta la tua volontà, come in cielo, anche in terra.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.

11 D acci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano;

Give us this day our daily bread.

12 r imettici i nostri debiti come anche noi li abbiamo rimessi ai nostri debitori;

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 e non ci esporre alla tentazione, ma liberaci dal maligno. ”

And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

14 P erché se voi perdonate agli uomini le loro colpe, il Padre vostro celeste perdonerà anche a voi;

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15 m a se voi non perdonate agli uomini, neppure il Padre vostro perdonerà le vostre colpe. Il digiuno

But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

16 « Quando digiunate, non abbiate un aspetto malinconico come gli ipocriti; poiché essi si sfigurano la faccia per far vedere agli uomini che digiunano. Io vi dico in verità: questo è il premio che ne hanno.

Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen of men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

17 M a tu, quando digiuni, ungiti il capo e lavati la faccia,

But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face;

18 a ffinché non appaia agli uomini che tu digiuni, ma al Padre tuo che è nel segreto; e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa. Un tesoro in cielo

that thou be not seen of men to fast, but of thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall recompense thee.

19 « Non fatevi tesori sulla terra, dove la tignola e la ruggine consumano, e dove i ladri scassinano e rubano;

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal:

20 m a fatevi tesori in cielo, dove né tignola né ruggine consumano, e dove i ladri non scassinano né rubano.

but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21 P erché dov’è il tuo tesoro, lì sarà anche il tuo cuore.

for where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also.

22 L a lampada del corpo è l’occhio. Se dunque il tuo occhio è limpido, tutto il tuo corpo sarà illuminato;

The lamp of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

23 m a se il tuo occhio è malvagio, tutto il tuo corpo sarà nelle tenebre. Se dunque la luce che è in te è tenebre, quanto grandi saranno le tenebre!

But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 N essuno può servire due padroni; perché o odierà l’uno e amerà l’altro, o avrà riguardo per l’uno e disprezzo per l’altro. Voi non potete servire Dio e Mammona. Le preoccupazioni

No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

25 « Perciò vi dico: non siate in ansia per la vostra vita, di che cosa mangerete {o di che cosa berrete}; né per il vostro corpo, di che vi vestirete. Non è la vita più del nutrimento e il corpo più del vestito?

Therefore I say unto you, be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment?

26 G uardate gli uccelli del cielo: non seminano, non mietono, non raccolgono in granai, e il Padre vostro celeste li nutre. Non valete voi molto più di loro?

Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value then they?

27 E chi di voi può, con la propria ansietà, aggiungere un’ora sola alla durata della sua vita ?

And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit unto the measure of his life?

28 E perché siete così ansiosi per il vestire? Osservate come crescono i gigli della campagna: essi non faticano e non filano;

And why are ye anxious concerning raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 e ppure io vi dico che neanche Salomone, con tutta la sua gloria, si vestì come uno di loro.

yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 O ra se Dio veste in questa maniera l’erba dei campi che oggi è, e domani è gettata nel forno, non farà molto di più per voi, o gente di poca fede?

But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 N on siate dunque in ansia, dicendo: “Che mangeremo? Che berremo? Di che ci vestiremo?”

Be not therefore anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 P erché sono i pagani che ricercano tutte queste cose; il Padre vostro celeste, infatti, sa che avete bisogno di tutte queste cose.

For after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 C ercate prima il regno {di Dio} e la sua giustizia, e tutte queste cose vi saranno date in più.

But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 N on siate dunque in ansia per il domani, perché il domani si preoccuperà di se stesso. Basta a ciascun giorno il suo affanno.

Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
