1 P reghiera di Mosè, uomo di Dio. Signore, tu sei stato per noi un rifugio d’età in età.

Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place In all generations.

2 P rima che i monti fossero nati e che tu avessi formato la terra e l’universo, anzi, da eternità in eternità, tu sei Dio.

Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

3 T u fai ritornare i mortali in polvere, dicendo: «Ritornate, figli degli uomini».

Thou turnest man to destruction, And sayest, Return, ye children of men.

4 P erché mille anni sono ai tuoi occhi come il giorno di ieri che è passato, come un turno di guardia di notte.

For a thousand years in thy sight Are but as yesterday when it is past, And as a watch in the night.

5 T u li porti via come in una piena; sono come un sogno. Sono come l’erba che verdeggia la mattina;

Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: In the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

6 l a mattina essa fiorisce e verdeggia, la sera è falciata e inaridisce.

In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; In the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

7 P oiché siamo consumati per la tua ira e siamo atterriti per il tuo sdegno.

For we are consumed in thine anger, And in thy wrath are we troubled.

8 T u metti le nostre colpe davanti a te e i nostri peccati nascosti alla luce del tuo volto.

Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, Our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

9 T utti i nostri giorni svaniscono per la tua ira; finiamo i nostri anni come un soffio.

For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: We bring our years to an end as a sigh.

10 I giorni dei nostri anni arrivano a settant’anni, o, per i più forti, a ottant’anni; e quel che ne fa l’orgoglio, non è che travaglio e vanità; perché passa presto, e noi ce ne voliamo via.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten, Or even by reason of strength fourscore years; Yet is their pride but labor and sorrow; For it is soon gone, and we fly away.

11 C hi conosce la forza della tua ira e il tuo sdegno con il timore che ti è dovuto?

Who knoweth the power of thine anger, And thy wrath according to the fear that is due unto thee?

12 I nsegnaci dunque a contare bene i nostri giorni, per acquistare un cuore saggio.

So teach us to number our days, That we may get us a heart of wisdom.

13 R itorna, Signore; fino a quando? Muoviti a pietà dei tuoi servi.

Return, O Jehovah; how long? And let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

14 S aziaci al mattino della tua grazia e noi esulteremo, gioiremo tutti i nostri giorni.

Oh satisfy us in the morning with thy lovingkindness, That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

15 R allegraci in proporzione dei giorni che ci hai afflitti e degli anni che abbiamo sofferto tribolazione.

Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, And the years wherein we have seen evil.

16 S i manifesti la tua opera ai tuoi servi e la tua gloria ai loro figli.

Let thy work appear unto thy servants, And thy glory upon their children.

17 L a grazia del Signore nostro Dio sia sopra di noi, e rendi stabile l’opera delle nostre mani; sì, l’opera delle nostre mani rendila stabile.

And let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; And establish thou the work of our hands upon us; Yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.
