1 L a parola del Signore che fu rivolta al profeta Geremia riguardo ai Filistei, prima che il faraone colpisse Gaza.

The word of Jehovah that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.

2 C osì parla il Signore: «Ecco, delle acque salgono dal settentrione, formano un torrente che straripa; esse inondano il paese e tutto ciò che contiene, le città e i loro abitanti; gli uomini lanciano grida, tutti gli abitanti del paese urlano.

Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall become an overflowing stream, and shall overflow the land and all that is therein, the city and them that dwell therein; and the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.

3 P er lo strepito degli zoccoli dei suoi potenti destrieri, per il rumore dei suoi carri e il fracasso delle ruote, i padri non si voltano verso i figli, tanto le loro mani sono divenute fiacche,

At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong ones, at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers look not back to their children for feebleness of hands;

4 p erché giunge il giorno in cui tutti i Filistei saranno devastati, in cui saranno soppressi i restanti ausiliari di Tiro e di Sidone, poiché il Signore devasterà i Filistei, ciò che resta dell’isola di Caftor.

because of the day that cometh to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper that remaineth: for Jehovah will destroy the Philistines, the remnant of the isle of Caphtor.

5 G aza è divenuta calva, Ascalon è ridotta al silenzio. Resti degli Anachim, fino a quando vi farete delle incisioni?

Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is brought to nought, the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself?

6 O spada del Signore, quando ti riposerai? Rientra nel tuo fodero, fèrmati e rimani tranquilla!

O thou sword of Jehovah, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard; rest, and be still.

7 C ome potresti riposare? Il Signore le dà i suoi ordini, le addita Ascalon e il lido del mare».

How canst thou be quiet, seeing Jehovah hath given thee a charge? Against Ashkelon, and against the sea-shore, there hath he appointed it.
