1 P oi Eliu riprese il discorso e disse:

Moreover Elihu answered and said,

2 « Credi tu di avere ragione quando dici: “La mia giustizia è superiore a quella di Dio”?

Thinkest thou this to be thy right, Or sayest thou, My righteousness is more than God's,

3 I nfatti hai detto: “Che mi giova? Che guadagno io di più a non peccare?”

That thou sayest, What advantage will it be unto thee? And, What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?

4 I o ti darò la risposta: a te e agli amici tuoi.

I will answer thee, And thy companions with thee.

5 C onsidera i cieli e vedi! Guarda le nuvole, come sono più in alto di te!

Look unto the heavens, and see; And behold the skies, which are higher than thou.

6 S e pecchi, quale inconveniente gli procuri? Se moltiplichi i tuoi misfatti, che danno gli arrechi?

If thou hast sinned, what effectest thou against him? And if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?

7 S e sei giusto, che gli dai? Che riceve egli dalla tua mano?

If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? Or what receiveth he of thy hand?

8 L a tua malvagità non nuoce che al tuo simile, e la tua giustizia non giova che ai figli degli uomini.

Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; And thy righteousness may profit a son of man.

9 S i grida per le molte oppressioni, si alzano lamenti per la violenza dei grandi;

By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out; They cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty.

10 m a nessuno dice: “Dov’è Dio, il mio Creatore, che nella notte ispira canti di gioia,

But none saith, Where is God my Maker, Who giveth songs in the night,

11 c he ci fa più intelligenti delle bestie dei campi e più saggi degli uccelli del cielo?”

Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, And maketh us wiser than the birds of the heavens?

12 L à gridano, ma egli non risponde, a motivo della superbia dei malvagi.

There they cry, but none giveth answer, Because of the pride of evil men.

13 C erto, Dio non dà ascolto a lamenti vani; l’Onnipotente non ne fa caso;

Surely God will not hear an empty cry, Neither will the Almighty regard it.

14 E tu, quando dici che non lo scorgi, la tua causa gli sta davanti; sappilo aspettare!

How much less when thou sayest thou beholdest him not, The cause is before him, and thou waitest for him!

15 M a ora, perché la sua ira non punisce, perché egli non prende rigorosa conoscenza delle trasgressioni,

But now, because he hath not visited in his anger, Neither doth he greatly regard arrogance;

16 G iobbe apre vanamente le labbra e accumula parole irragionevoli».

Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vanity; He multiplieth words without knowledge.
