1 A nd again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.

Y el Señor volvió a enojarse con el pueblo de Israel, e indujo a David a levantar un censo de todo Israel y Judá.

2 A nd the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people.

Llamó a Joab, que era el general de su ejército, y le dijo: «Ve y recorre todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Berseba, y haz un censo del pueblo. Quiero saber cuántos son.»

3 A nd Joab said unto the king, Now Jehovah thy God add unto the people, how many soever they may be, a hundredfold; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

Pero Joab le respondió al rey: «¡Que el Señor multiplique al pueblo cien veces, y que Su Majestad llegue a verlo! ¿Por qué quiere Su Majestad hacer esto?»

4 N otwithstanding, the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

Pero la orden del rey pudo más que Joab y que sus capitanes, así que Joab y sus capitanes salieron del palacio y se dispusieron a levantar el censo de Israel.

5 A nd they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and unto Jazer:

Cruzaron el Jordán y acamparon en Aroer, al sur de la ciudad que está en el valle de Gaad, junto a Jazer.

6 t hen they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Sidon,

De allí fueron a Galaad y a la tierra baja de Jodsí, y luego a Dan Yaán y a los alrededores de Sidón.

7 a nd came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beer-sheba.

Luego fueron a la fortaleza de Tiro, y recorrieron todas las ciudades de los jivitas y de los cananeos, hasta llegar al Néguev de Judá, en Berseba.

8 S o when they had gone to and from through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Después de nueve meses y veinte días de andar recorriendo todo el país, volvieron a Jerusalén.

9 A nd Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

Y Joab le presentó al rey el resultado del censo, y resultó que en Israel había ochocientos mil hombres aptos para la guerra, y en Judá había quinientos mil.

10 A nd David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto Jehovah, I have sinned greatly in that which I have done: but now, O Jehovah, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

Pero después de haber censado al pueblo, David se sintió muy apesadumbrado y fue a decirle al Señor: «He cometido un grave pecado. Te ruego, Señor, que perdones a este siervo tuyo por haber sido tan necio.»

11 A nd when David rose up in the morning, the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

Al día siguiente, cuando David se levantó, la palabra del Señor vino a Gad, el vidente de David, y le dijo:

12 G o and speak unto David, Thus saith Jehovah, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

«Ve y dile de mi parte a David: “Yo, el Señor, te doy a elegir una de tres cosas. Haré lo que tú elijas.”»

13 S o Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise thee, and consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

Gad fue a ver a David y le dio el mensaje del Señor. Le dijo: «¿Quieres que haya siete años de hambre en tu tierra? ¿O prefieres huir de tus enemigos durante tres meses? ¿O prefieres que haya en tu pueblo tres días de peste? Piénsalo bien, pues debo llevar una respuesta a quien me envía.»

14 A nd David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of Jehovah; for his mercies are great; and let me not fall into the hand of man.

Entonces David le dijo a Gad: «Estoy en un gran aprieto. Permíteme caer en las manos del Señor, pues su misericordia es grande en extremo. ¡No me dejes caer en las manos de ningún hombre!»

15 S o Jehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

Entonces el Señor envió la peste sobre Israel desde la mañana y hasta el día señalado, y desde Dan hasta Berseba murieron setenta mil israelitas.

16 A nd when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Jehovah repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough; now stay thy hand. And the angel of Jehovah was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Pero cuando el ángel extendió su mano sobre Jerusalén para destruirla, el Señor se arrepintió y le dijo al ángel destructor: «¡Basta ya! ¡Detente!» El ángel estaba junto a la era de Arauna el jebuseo.

17 A nd David spake unto Jehovah when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

Y cuando David vio que el ángel destruía al pueblo, le dijo al Señor: «Yo soy quien ha pecado; yo soy quien hizo mal. ¡Pero estas ovejas no han hecho nada malo! Te ruego que nos castigues a mí y a mi familia.»

18 A nd Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Entonces Gad fue y le dijo: «Ve y edifica un altar al Señor en la era de Arauna el jebuseo.»

19 A nd David went up according to the saying of Gad, as Jehovah commanded.

David fue a cumplir lo que el Señor le había ordenado hacer por medio de Gad,

20 A nd Araunah looked forth, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

y cuando Arauna vio que el rey y sus servidores se acercaban a él, salió de su casa y se inclinó ante el rey hasta tocar el suelo,

21 A nd Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar unto Jehovah, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

y le preguntó: «¿A qué debe este siervo la visita de Su Majestad?» Y David le dijo: «Quiero comprar tu era, para edificar allí un altar al Señor y se detenga la mortandad entre el pueblo.»

22 A nd Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, the oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for the wood:

Arauna le respondió: «Tome Su Majestad lo que le parezca mejor. Yo le ofrezco los toros para el sacrificio, y como leña puede usar los trillos y los yugos de las yuntas.

23 a ll this, O king, doth Araunah give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, Jehovah thy God accept thee.

Todo lo que Su Majestad necesite, yo se lo doy.» Todavía añadió Arauna: «Que el Señor sea propicio a Su Majestad.»

24 A nd the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will verily buy it of thee at a price. Neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto Jehovah my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

Pero el rey le respondió: «De ninguna manera. Yo te pagaré su precio. No voy a ofrecer al Señor mi Dios holocaustos que no me cuesten nada.» Y David le compró la era y los toros por cincuenta monedas de plata,

25 A nd David built there an altar unto Jehovah, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So Jehovah was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

y construyó allí un altar al Señor, en el que ofreció holocaustos y ofrendas de paz. Y el Señor escuchó las súplicas del país, y detuvo la plaga en Israel.
