1 F or this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,

Este Melquisedec, que era rey de Salén y sacerdote del Dios Altísimo, salió al encuentro de Abrahán cuando éste volvía de derrotar a los reyes, y lo bendijo.

2 t o whom also Abraham divided a tenth part of all (being first, by interpretation, King of righteousness, and then also King of Salem, which is King of peace;

Entonces Abrahán le dio los diezmos de todo. Melquisedec significa, en primer lugar, «Rey de justicia», y también «Rey de Salén», que significa «Rey de paz».

3 w ithout father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like unto the Son of God), abideth a priest continually.

Nada se sabe de su padre ni de su madre, ni de sus antepasados, ni si tuvo principio ni fin; pero, a semejanza del Hijo de Dios, permanece como sacerdote eterno.

4 N ow consider how great this man was, unto whom Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth out of the chief spoils.

Ustedes pueden ver, entonces, su grandeza, pues el mismo patriarca Abrahán le dio los diezmos del botín.

5 A nd they indeed of the sons of Levi that receive the priest's office have commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though these have come out of the loins of Abraham:

Ahora bien, según la ley, los descendientes de Leví, que reciben el sacerdocio, tienen el derecho de tomar los diezmos del pueblo, es decir, de sus propios hermanos, aun cuando éstos sean también descendientes de Abrahán.

6 b ut he whose genealogy is not counted from them hath taken tithes of Abraham, and hath blessed him that hath the promises.

Pero Melquisedec, aunque no era descendiente de Leví, tomó de Abrahán los diezmos, y bendijo al que tenía las promesas;

7 B ut without any dispute the less is blessed of the better.

¡y nadie puede negar que el que bendice es superior al que recibe la bendición!

8 A nd here men that die receive tithes; but there one, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

En este caso, los que reciben los diezmos son simples hombres; pero en aquél, los recibe Melquisedec, de quien se da testimonio de que vive.

9 A nd, so to say, through Abraham even Levi, who receiveth tithes, hath paid tithes;

Y hasta podría decirse que Leví, que ahora recibe los diezmos, en aquel tiempo los pagó por medio de Abrahán,

10 f or he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchizedek met him.

pues Leví ya estaba presente en su antepasado Abrahán cuando Melquisedec le salió al encuentro.

11 N ow if there was perfection through the Levitical priesthood (for under it hath the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should arise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be reckoned after the order of Aaron?

Si la perfección se alcanzara mediante el sacerdocio levítico (ya que bajo éste el pueblo recibió la ley), ¿qué necesidad habría de que aún se levantara otro sacerdote, según el orden de Melquisedec y no según el de Aarón?

12 F or the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

Porque al cambiar el sacerdocio, también se tiene que cambiar la ley.

13 F or he of whom these things are said belongeth to another tribe, from which no man hath given attendance at the altar.

Pero nuestro Señor, de quien la Escritura dice esto, era de otra tribu, de la cual nadie sirvió al altar.

14 F or it is evident that our Lord hath sprung out of Judah; as to which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priests.

Es bien sabido que nuestro Señor procedía de la tribu de Judá, acerca de la cual Moisés no dijo nada en relación con el sacerdocio.

15 A nd what we say is yet more abundantly evident, if after the likeness of Melchizedek there ariseth another priest,

Esto resulta más evidente si el nuevo sacerdote que se levanta es alguien semejante a Melquisedec,

16 w ho hath been made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life:

quien no llegó a ser sacerdote por ceñirse a una ley meramente humana, sino por el poder de una vida indestructible.

17 f or it is witnessed of him, Thou art a priest for ever After the order of Melchizedek.

Pues de él se hace constar: «Tú eres sacerdote para siempre, Según el orden de Melquisedec».

18 F or there is a disannulling of a foregoing commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness

De modo que el mandamiento anterior queda anulado por resultar endeble e inútil,

19 ( for the law made nothing perfect), and a bringing in thereupon of a better hope, through which we draw nigh unto God.

ya que la ley no perfeccionó nada, y en su lugar tenemos una esperanza mejor, por la cual nos acercamos a Dios.

20 A nd inasmuch as it is not without the taking of an oath

Además, esto no se hizo sin un juramento.

21 ( for they indeed have been made priests without an oath; but he with an oath by him that saith of him, The Lord sware and will not repent himself, Thou art a priest for ever);

Los otros sacerdotes fueron nombrados sin juramento, pero éste fue nombrado por el juramento de aquel que le dijo: «El Señor lo ha jurado, y no se arrepentirá: “Tú eres sacerdote para siempre, según el orden de Melquisedec”».

22 b y so much also hath Jesus become the surety of a better covenant.

Por lo tanto, es Jesús quien garantiza un pacto mejor.

23 A nd they indeed have been made priests many in number, because that by death they are hindered from continuing:

Ahora bien, los otros sacerdotes fueron muchos porque la muerte les impedía continuar;

24 b ut he, because he abideth for ever, hath his priesthood unchangeable.

pero Jesús tiene un sacerdocio inmutable porque permanece para siempre.

25 W herefore also he is able to save to the uttermost them that draw near unto God through him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Por eso, también puede salvar para siempre a los que por medio de él se acercan a Dios, ya que vive siempre para interceder por ellos.

26 F or such a high priest became us, holy, guileless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Jesús es el sumo sacerdote que necesitábamos tener: santo, inocente, sin mancha, apartado de los pecadores, y exaltado por encima de los cielos.

27 w ho needeth not daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people: for this he did once for all, when he offered up himself.

No es como los otros sumos sacerdotes, que diariamente tienen que ofrecer sacrificios, primero por sus propios pecados y luego por los del pueblo. Jesús hizo esto una sola vez y para siempre, cuando se ofreció a sí mismo.

28 F or the law appointeth men high priests, having infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was after the law, appointeth a Son, perfected for evermore.

La ley nombra sumos sacerdotes a hombres débiles; pero el juramento, que es posterior a la ley, nombra sumo sacerdote al Hijo, quien ha sido hecho perfecto para siempre.
