1 A nd Jehovah sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

Un día, el Señor envió a Natán a hablar con David, y Natán le dijo: «En cierta ciudad vivían dos hombres. Uno de ellos era rico, y el otro era pobre.

2 T he rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds;

El rico tenía muchas ovejas y vacas,

3 b ut the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own morsel, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

pero el pobre sólo tenía una corderita que había comprado y criado, y que era como su propia hija, pues comía de su mesa, bebía de su vaso y dormía en su regazo; era como de la familia, pues había crecido con él y con sus hijos.

4 A nd there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him, but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

Un día, el hombre rico recibió a un visitante y, como no quiso matar a ninguna de sus ovejas o vacas para ofrecerle de comer al visitante, fue y tomó la oveja del hombre pobre, y la preparó para su visitante.»

5 A nd David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As Jehovah liveth, the man that hath done this is worthy to die:

David se puso muy furioso contra aquel hombre, y le dijo a Natán: «Juro por el Señor que ese hombre merece la muerte.

6 a nd he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

Y por haber actuado así, sin mostrar nada de misericordia, tiene que pagar cuatro veces el valor de la oveja.»

7 A nd Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

Entonces Natán le dijo: «¡Tú eres ese hombre! Así ha dicho el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Yo te consagré como rey de Israel; yo te libré del poder de Saúl,

8 a nd I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added unto thee such and such things.

yo te di el palacio que fue de tu señor, y puse en tus brazos sus mujeres. Además, yo te entregué las tribus de Israel y de Judá y, por si esto fuera poco, yo estaba dispuesto a darte mucho más.”

9 W herefore hast thou despised the word of Jehovah, to do that which is evil in his sight? thou hast smitten Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

¿Por qué menospreciaste la palabra del Señor, y actuaste mal delante de sus ojos? Al hitita Urías lo mataste por medio de la espada de los amonitas, para quedarte con su mujer.

10 N ow therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

“Ahora, en castigo, la violencia jamás se apartará de tu propia familia, pues menospreciaste al Señor y tomaste como mujer a la esposa de Urías el hitita.”

11 T hus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house; and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

Pero así dice el Señor: “Yo haré que el mal sobrevenga sobre tu propia casa. Ante tus propios ojos entregaré tus mujeres a tu prójimo, y a pleno sol se acostará con ellas.

12 F or thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

Lo que tú hiciste en secreto, yo lo haré a plena luz del día y en presencia de todos los israelitas.”»

13 A nd David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against Jehovah. And Nathan said unto David, Jehovah also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

David le respondió a Natán: «Reconozco que he pecado contra el Señor.» Y Natán le dijo: «El Señor ha perdonado tu pecado, y no vas a morir.

14 H owbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of Jehovah to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

Pero como los enemigos del Señor hablan mal de él por causa de este pecado tuyo, tu hijo recién nacido tiene que morir.»

15 A nd Nathan departed unto his house. And Jehovah struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

Después de esto, Natán regresó a su casa. Y el niño que la mujer de Urías le dio a David, se enfermó de gravedad porque el Señor así lo quiso.

16 D avid therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.

David le rogó al Señor por la salud de su hijo, y ayunaba y se pasaba la noche acostado en el suelo.

17 A nd the elders of his house arose, and stood beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

Los ancianos que vivían en su palacio iban a verlo y trataban de levantarlo del suelo, pero David se negaba a levantarse, y tampoco quería comer.

18 A nd it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he hearkened not unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead!

Siete días después, el niño murió, y sus sirvientes temían decírselo, pues decían: «Si cuando el niño vivía, el rey no quería escucharnos, con más razón se afligirá si le decimos que el niño ya murió.»

19 B ut when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.

Pero cuando David los vio hablar entre sí, se dio cuenta de que el niño ya había muerto, así que les preguntó: «¿Ya ha muerto el niño?» Aquellos le respondieron: «Sí, señor; ya ha muerto.»

20 T hen David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel; and he came into the house of Jehovah, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.

Entonces David se levantó del suelo, y se bañó y se perfumó, y se puso ropa limpia; luego fue a la casa del Señor, y lo adoró. Después regresó a su casa y pidió de comer, y comió.

21 T hen said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.

Los sirvientes le preguntaron: «¿Qué es lo que haces? Cuando el niño aún vivía, estuviste ayunando y orando, pero ahora que ha muerto, ¡te levantas y pides de comer!»

22 A nd he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who knoweth whether Jehovah will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?

Y David les dijo: «Cuando el niño aún vivía, yo ayunaba y lloraba, y decía: “Tal vez el Señor se compadezca de mí, y deje vivir al niño.”

23 B ut now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

Pero ahora que el niño ha muerto, ¿de qué me sirve ayunar? ¿Acaso podría yo devolverle la vida? Yo puedo ir a donde él está, pero él ya no volverá conmigo.»

24 A nd David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon. And Jehovah loved him;

Y David fue y consoló a Betsabé, su mujer, y se allegó a ella, y ella le dio un hijo, al que llamó Salomón, Y el Señor amó a este niño,

25 a nd he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, for Jehovah's sake.

y por eso envió un mensaje al profeta Natán, para decirle que lo llamara Jedidías. David conquista Rabá

26 N ow Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

Joab se encontraba en Rabá combatiendo a los amonitas, y capturó la ciudad del rey.

27 A nd Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah; yea, I have taken the city of waters.

Entonces envió un mensaje a David para decirle: «Después de sitiar la ciudad de Rabá, he capturado también las reservas de agua.

28 N ow therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.

Por favor, reúne al resto del ejército y ven con ellos, y acampa frente a la ciudad y tómala. Si yo la tomo, llevará mi nombre.»

29 A nd David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.

David reunió entonces al resto de su ejército, y fue y luchó contra Rabá y la capturó.

30 A nd he took the crown of their king from off his head; and the weight thereof was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much.

Le quitó al rey la corona de oro que llevaba puesta, la cual pesaba treinta y tres kilos y tenía incrustadas piedras preciosas; los hombres de David la tomaron y con ella coronaron a David, y David obtuvo un gran botín de la ciudad.

31 A nd he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

A la gente que quedaba en la ciudad la puso a trabajar con sierras y trillos y hachas de hierro, y también los puso a trabajar en los hornos de ladrillos. Esto mismo lo hizo en todas la ciudades de los amonitas. Después de esto, David regresó a Jerusalén con todo su ejército.
