1 A nd it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

Después de esto, murió el rey de los amonitas, y subió al trono su hijo Janún.

2 A nd David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me. So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

Y David pensó: «Voy a tratar al hijo de Najás, con la misma buena voluntad con que su padre me trató a mí.» Envió entonces una comisión para consolar a Najás por la muerte de su padre, pero cuando los enviados de David llegaron al territorio amonita,

3 B ut the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, in that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

los jefes del pueblo le dijeron a Janún: «¿De veras crees que David te envía mensajeros para consolarte y honrar a tu padre? ¡No! Ha enviado a esa gente como espías, para que inspeccionen la ciudad y luego puedan destruirla.»

4 S o Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

Entonces Janún arrestó a los mensajeros de David, les rasuró la mitad de la barba, les rasgó la ropa hasta abajo de la cintura, y los envió de regreso semidesnudos.

5 W hen they told it unto David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

Cuando David supo esto, mandó sirvientes a recibirlos, pues ellos estaban muy avergonzados. Por eso el rey les permitió que se quedaran en Jericó hasta que les creciera la barba, después de lo cual podrían volver.

6 A nd when the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.

Los amonitas se dieron cuenta que se habían ganado la enemistad de David, así que contrataron a veinte mil soldados sirios de Bet Rejob y de Soba, mil soldados del rey de Macá y doce mil de Istob.

7 A nd when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

Y cuando David lo supo, envió a Joab con sus soldados más valientes a combatirlos.

8 A nd the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

Entonces los amonitas se prepararon para la batalla a las puertas de la ciudad, mientras que los sirios de Soba, de Rejob, de Istob y de Macá se alinearon en el campo.

9 N ow when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

Cuando Joab vio que la batalla se libraría de frente y por la retaguardia, hizo una selección de los mejores guerreros y se preparó en orden de batalla para luchar contra los sirios.

10 A nd the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.

Al ejército restante lo puso en manos de su hermano Abisay, y lo alineó para encontrarse con los amonitas.

11 A nd he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

Y le dijo: «Si ves que los sirios nos van ganando, vendrás en nuestra ayuda; y si los amonitas te van ganando, nosotros iremos en tu ayuda.

12 B e of good courage, and let us play the man for ou people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him good.

Vamos a luchar con todas nuestras fuerzas por el pueblo de Israel, por todas las ciudades de nuestro Dios, y que el Señor haga lo que mejor le parezca.»

13 S o Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.

Cuando Joab y sus soldados arremetieron contra los sirios, éstos salieron huyendo de Joab y del ejército israelita.

14 A nd when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

Y cuando los amonitas vieron que el ejército sirio huía, también ellos huyeron de Abisay y sus hombres, y se refugiaron en la ciudad. Así terminó la batalla, y Joab regresó a Jerusalén.

15 A nd when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

Pero los sirios, al verse derrotados por el ejército israelita, volvieron a reagruparse.

16 A nd Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head.

Entonces Hadad Ezer mandó traer a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del río Éufrates, y llegaron a Jelán comandados por Sobac, general del ejército de Hadad Ezer.

17 A nd it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

David supo de estos movimientos y reunió a todo el ejército de Israel, y juntos cruzaron el Jordán para llegar a Jelán. Cuando los sirios los vieron, se formaron en orden de batalla y pelearon contra David y su ejército.

18 A nd the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, so that he died there.

Pero el ejército sirio fue vencido y huyó de los israelitas, y ese día David mató a los soldados sirios que conducían setecientos carros, y a cuarenta mil hombres de caballería. Allí murió también Sobac, general del ejército sirio.

19 A nd when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

Y cuando los reyes que ayudaban a Hadad Ezer vieron cómo habían sido derrotados sus ejércitos, firmaron la paz con Israel y se hicieron sus súbditos, y desde entonces los sirios se abstuvieron de ayudar a los amonitas.
