1 N ow in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have rule over them, (whereas it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them,)

El día trece del mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar, debía ser ejecutado el decreto del rey, que ordenaba que los judíos debían ser exterminados por sus enemigos. Pero sucedió todo lo contrario, porque fueron los judíos los que se vengaron de quienes los aborrecían.

2 t he Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them was fallen upon all the peoples.

Ese día los judíos se reunieron en sus ciudades, en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, para vengarse de los que habían procurado su mal, y nadie les opuso resistencia porque el temor a ellos había cundido por todos los pueblos.

3 A nd all the princes of the provinces, and the satraps, and the governors, and they that did the king's business, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai was fallen upon them.

Era tanto el miedo que sentían ante Mardoqueo, que todos los príncipes de las provincias, sátrapas, capitanes y oficiales del rey, apoyaban a los judíos.

4 F or Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame went forth throughout all the provinces; for the man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.

Y es que Mardoqueo ya era muy importante en la casa del rey. Su fama se extendía por todas las provincias, y cada vez ganaba más poder.

5 A nd the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they would unto them that hated them.

Y así, los judíos mataron a filo de espada a todos sus enemigos; les causaron gran mortandad y destrucción, e hicieron con ellos lo que quisieron.

6 A nd in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.

Sólo en Susa, que era la capital del reino, los judíos mataron y destruyeron a quinientos hombres,

7 A nd Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,

y también mataron a Parsandata, Dalfón, Aspata,

8 a nd Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,

Porata, Adalía, Aridata,

9 a nd Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vaizatha,

Parmasta, Arisay, Ariday y Vaizata,

10 t he ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jew's enemy, slew they; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

que eran diez hijos de Amán, el hijo de Hamedata y enemigo de los judíos, aunque no tocaron sus bienes.

11 O n that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.

Ese mismo día se informó al rey acerca del número de muertos que hubo en Susa, la residencia real.

12 A nd the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king's provinces! Now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.

Entonces el rey le dijo a la reina Ester: «Si en Susa, capital del reino, los judíos mataron a quinientos hombres y a diez hijos de Amán, ¿qué no habrán hecho en las otras provincias del reino? ¿Qué otra petición tienes? Te será concedida. ¿O qué más quieres? Se hará lo que pidas.»

13 T hen said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews that are in Shushan to do to-morrow also according unto this day's decree, and let Haman's ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.

Ester respondió: «Si a Su Majestad le parece bien, concédase a los judíos hacer mañana en Susa lo mismo que hicieron hoy, y que cuelguen en la horca a los diez hijos de Amán.»

14 A nd the king commanded it so to be done: and a decree was given out in Shushan; and they hanged Haman's ten sons.

El rey ordenó que se hiciera así. La orden fue dada en Susa, y los diez hijos de Amán fueron colgados.

15 A nd the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men in Shushan; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

Los judíos que estaban en Susa se reunieron también el catorce del mes de Adar, y mataron en Susa a otros trescientos hombres, pero no tocaron sus bienes. La fiesta de Purim

16 A nd the other Jews that were in the king's provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of them that hated them seventy and five thousand; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

También los otros judíos que estaban en las demás provincias del rey se juntaron y se dispusieron a defender su vida. Se libraron de sus enemigos, y mataron a setenta y cinco mil de ellos, pero no tocaron sus bienes.

17 T his was done on the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

Esto sucedió el día trece del mes de Adar, y el día catorce del mismo mes descansaron y lo declararon día de banquete y de alegría.

18 B ut the Jews that were in Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

Los judíos que estaban en Susa se juntaron los días trece y catorce del mismo mes, y el día quince del mismo mes descansaron y lo declararon día de banquete y de alegría.

19 T herefore do the Jews of the villages, that dwell in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

Por eso desde entonces los judíos que viven en las aldeas y en villas sin murallas celebran el día catorce del mes de Adar como un día de alegría y de banquete; es para ellos un día de regocijo, en el que cada uno comparte su comida con su vecino.

20 A nd Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,

Mardoqueo escribió todo esto, y envió cartas a todos los judíos que vivían en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, cercanos y lejanos.

21 t o enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,

Les ordenó celebrar cada año los días catorce y quince del mes de Adar,

22 a s the days wherein the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a good day; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.

como los días en que los judíos se libraron de sus enemigos para vivir en paz, y como el mes en que la tristeza se cambió en alegría y el luto en un día feliz. Les ordenó declararlos días de banquete y de alegría, y de compartir cada uno su comida con su vecino, y de ayudar a los pobres.

23 A nd the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them;

Los judíos aceptaron cumplir con lo que Mardoqueo les ordenó por escrito, como habían comenzado a hacerlo.

24 b ecause Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;

Y es que Amán, el hijo de Hamedata el agagueo y enemigo de todos los judíos, había ideado un plan para destruirlos; había echado «pur», (es decir, suertes) para matarlos y acabar con ellos.

25 b ut when the matter came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he had devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

Pero cuando Ester se presentó ante el rey, éste ordenó por carta que el perverso designio de Amán en contra de los judíos recayera sobre su propia cabeza, y que él y sus hijos fueran colgados en la horca.

26 W herefore they called these days Purim, after the name of Pur. Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come unto them,

Por causa del nombre «pur» estos días fueron llamados «Purim»; y por lo que decía la carta, y por lo que ellos mismo vieron y pudieron entender,

27 t he Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so that it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to the writing thereof, and according to the appointed time thereof, every year;

los judíos establecieron como norma el no dejar de celebrar cada año estos dos días, según está escrito. Esta norma regiría sobre todos sus descendientes y allegados,

28 a nd that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the remembrance of them perish from their seed.

y estos días serían recordados y celebrados por todas las generaciones, familias, provincias y ciudades. Los días de «purim» no dejarían de ser observados por los judíos, ni sus descendientes dejarían jamás de celebrarlos.

29 T hen Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim.

Esta segunda carta referente a la fiesta de «purim» la suscribieron con plena autoridad la reina Ester hija de Abijaíl y Mardoqueo el judío.

30 A nd he sent letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,

Las cartas enviadas a todos los judíos de las ciento veintisiete provincias del reino de Asuero, contenían un mensaje de paz y de verdad,

31 t o confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had ordained for themselves and for their seed, in the matter of the fastings and their cry.

y confirmaban la celebración de estos días de «purim» en el tiempo señalado, conforme a las órdenes de Mardoqueo el judío y la reina Ester. Los judíos y sus descendientes se comprometían a conmemorar el fin de los ayunos y lamentos.

32 A nd the commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.

Las órdenes de Ester confirmaron la celebración de las fiestas de «purim», y esto quedó registrado en un libro.
