1 N ow there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear Jehovah: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two children to be bondmen.

Una donna, moglie di un discepolo dei profeti, gridò a Eliseo, dicendo: «Il tuo servo, mio marito, è morto, e tu sai che il tuo servo temeva l'Eterno; ora il creditore è venuto a prendersi i miei due figli per farli suoi schiavi».

2 A nd Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me; what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thy handmaid hath not anything in the house, save a pot of oil.

Eliseo le disse: «Che cosa devo fare per te? Dimmi, che cosa hai in casa?» Ella rispose: «La tua serva in casa non ha altro che un vasetto d'olio».

3 T hen he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

Allora egli disse: «Va' e chiedi in prestito a tutti i tuoi vicini dei vasi vuoti, e non chiederne pochi.

4 A nd thou shalt go in, and shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and pour out into all those vessels; and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

Quando sei rientrata, chiudi la porta dietro di te e dei tuoi figli, poi versa l'olio in tutti quei vasi mettendoli da parte man mano che saranno pieni».

5 S o she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons; they brought the vessels to her, and she poured out.

Ella dunque si allontanò da lui e chiuse la porta dietro di sé e dei suoi figli; questi le portavano i vasi ed ella vi versava l'olio.

6 A nd it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

Quando i vasi furono pieni, ella disse a suo figlio: «Portami ancora un vaso». Ma egli le rispose: «Non ci sono piú vasi». E l'olio si fermò.

7 T hen she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy sons of the rest.

Allora essa andò a riferire la cosa all'uomo di DIO, che le disse: «Va' a vendere l'olio e paga il tuo debito; con quel che resta vivrete tu e i tuoi figli».

8 A nd it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.

Or avvenne che un giorno Eliseo andò a Shunem, dove abitava una donna facoltosa, e questa lo costrinse a prendere un po' di cibo. Cosí, tutte le volte che passava di là, si recava a mangiare da lei.

9 A nd she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, that passeth by us continually.

Ella disse a suo marito: «Ecco, io sono certa che colui che passa sempre da noi è un santo uomo di DIO.

10 L et us make, I pray thee, a little chamber on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a seat, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

Ti prego, facciamo una piccola stanza in muratura al piano di sopra e mettiamoci per lui un letto, un tavolo, una sedia e un candeliere, cosí quando verrà da noi, vi si potrà ritirare».

11 A nd it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber and lay there.

Un giorno che Eliseo passava di là, si ritirò nella stanza di sopra e vi si coricò.

12 A nd he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.

Poi disse a Ghehazi, suo servo: «Chiama questa Shunamita». Egli la chiamò ed ella si presentò davanti a lui.

13 A nd he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.

Eliseo disse quindi al suo servo: «Or dille cosí: "Ecco, tu hai avuto per noi tutta questa premura; cosa posso fare per te? Vuoi che dica qualcosa a nome tuo al re o al capo dell'esercito?"». Ella rispose:

14 A nd he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no son, and her husband is old.

«Io vivo in mezzo al mio popolo». Allora Eliseo disse: «Cosa posso dunque fare per lei?». Ghehazi rispose: «A dire il vero, lei non ha figli e suo marito è vecchio».

15 A nd he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.

Eliseo gli disse: «Chiamala!». Egli la chiamò, ed ella si fermò sulla porta.

16 A nd he said, At this season, when the time cometh round, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thy handmaid.

Allora Eliseo le disse: «In questa stagione, l'anno prossimo, tu abbraccerai un figlio». Ella rispose: «No, mio signore; o uomo di DIO, non ingannare la tua serva!».

17 A nd the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season, when the time came round, as Elisha had said unto her.

La donna concepí e partorí un figlio, l'anno seguente in quella stessa stagione, come Eliseo le aveva detto.

18 A nd when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.

Ora il bambino crebbe; un giorno che era andato da suo padre con i mietitori,

19 A nd he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to his servant, Carry him to his mother.

disse a suo padre: «La mia testa, la mia testa!». Il padre ordinò al suo servo: «Portalo da sua madre!».

20 A nd when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.

Questi lo prese e lo portò da sua madre. Il fanciullo rimase sulle ginocchia di lei fino a mezzogiorno, poi morí.

21 A nd she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.

Allora ella salí, lo adagiò sul letto dell'uomo di DIO, chiuse la porta dietro di lui ed uscí.

22 A nd she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the servants, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

Poi chiamò suo marito e gli disse: «Ti prego, mandami uno dei servi e un'asina; corro dall'uomo di DIO e torno».

23 A nd he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to-day? it is neither new moon nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.

Egli le domandò: «Perché vuoi andare da lui proprio oggi? Non è il novilunio e neppure sabato». Ella rispose: «Andrà tutto bene!».

24 T hen she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slacken me not the riding, except I bid thee.

Poi fece sellare l'asina e ordinò al suo servo: «Conducimi e va' avanti, non rallentare il passo per me, a meno che te lo ordini».

25 S o she went, and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is the Shunammite:

Cosí ella partí e si recò dall'uomo di DIO, sul monte Karmel. Non appena l'uomo di DIO la vide da lontano, disse a Ghehazi, suo servo: «Ecco la Shunamita!

26 r un, I pray thee, now to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.

Ti prego, corri ad incontrarla e dille: "Stai bene? Sta bene tuo marito? E il fanciullo sta bene?"». Ella rispose: «Stanno bene».

27 A nd when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, Let her alone: for her soul is vexed within her; and Jehovah hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.

Quando giunse dall'uomo di DIO sul monte, gli abbracciò i piedi. Ghehazi si avvicinò per allontanarla, ma l'uomo di DIO disse: «Lasciala stare, perché la sua anima è amareggiata, e l'Eterno me l'ha nascosto e non me l'ha rivelato».

28 T hen she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?

Ella disse: «Avevo forse chiesto al mio signore un figlio? Non ti avevo forse detto: "Non m'ingannare"?».

29 T hen he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thy hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.

Allora Eliseo disse a Ghehazi: «Cingiti i lombi, prendi in mano il mio bastone e parti. Se incontri qualcuno, non salutarlo"; e se qualcuno ti saluta non rispondergli; poserai il mio bastone sulla faccia del fanciullo».

30 A nd the mother of the child said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.

La madre del fanciullo disse a Eliseo «Com'è vero che l'Eterno vive e che tu pure vivi, io non ti lascerò». Cosí Eliseo si levo e la seguí.

31 A nd Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he returned to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.

Or Ghehazi li aveva preceduti e aveva posto il bastone sulla faccia del fanciullo, ma non ci fu né voce né risposta. Perciò egli tornò incontro ad Eliseo e gli riferí la cosa, dicendo: «Il fanciullo non si è svegliato».

32 A nd when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.

Quando Eliseo entrò in casa, vide il fanciullo morto e sdraiato sul suo letto.

33 H e went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto Jehovah.

Egli allora entrò, chiuse la porta dietro loro due e pregò l'Eterno.

34 A nd he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon him; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.

Poi salí sul letto e si coricò sul fanciullo; pose la propria bocca sulla sua bocca, i propri occhi sui suoi occhi, le proprie mani sulle sue mani; si distese sopra di lui e la carne del fanciullo si riscaldò.

35 T hen he returned, and walked in the house once to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

Quindi Eliseo si tirò indietro e andò qua e là per la casa; poi salí di nuovo e si distese sopra il fanciullo; il fanciullo starnutí sette volte ed aperse gli occhi.

36 A nd he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.

Allora egli chiamò Ghehazi e gli disse: «Chiama questa Shunamita». Egli la chiamò quando ella giunse da Eliseo, questi le disse: «Prendi tuo figlio».

37 T hen she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground; and she took up her son, and went out.

Cosí ella entrò e gli si gettò ai piedi, prostrandosi fino a terra; poi prese suo figlio ed uscí.

38 A nd Elisha came again to Gilgal. And there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets.

Poi Eliseo tornò a Ghilgal; or c'era carestia nel paese. Mentre i discepoli dei profeti erano seduti davanti a lui, egli disse al suo servo: «Metti sul, fuoco la pentola grande e fa' cuocere una minestra per i discepoli dei profeti».

39 A nd one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage; for they knew them not.

Uno di essi, che era uscito nei campi per cogliere delle erbe, trovò una pianta rampicante selvatica, da cui raccolse delle coloquintidi, e ne riempí la veste; quindi ritornò e le tagliò a pezzi nella pentola della minestra, benché non sapessero che cosa fossero.

40 S o they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.

Poi versarono la minestra agli uomini perché mangiassero; come essi l'assaggiarono, esclamarono: «C'è la morte nella pentola, o uomo di DIO», e non ne poterono mangiare.

41 B ut he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.

Eliseo allora ordinò: «Portatemi della farina!». La gettò nella pentola, poi disse: «Versatene alla gente perché ne mangi». E non c'era piú nulla di cattivo nella pentola.

42 A nd there came a man from Baal-shalishah, and brought the man of God bread of the first-fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.

Giunse poi un uomo da Baal-Shalisha, che portò all'uomo di DIO del pane delle primizie: venti pani d'orzo e alcune spighe di frumento nel loro guscio. Eliseo disse: «Dallo alla gente perché ne mangi».

43 A nd his servant said, What, should I set this before a hundred men? But he said, Give the people, that they may eat; for thus saith Jehovah, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.

Ma il suo servo rispose: «Come posso mettere questo davanti a cento persone?». Eliseo ordinò nuovamente: «Dallo alla gente perché ne mangi, poiché cosí dice l'Eterno: "Mangeranno e ne avanzerà"».

44 S o he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of Jehovah.

Cosí egli lo pose davanti alla gente, che mangiò e ne avanzò, secondo la parola dell'Eterno.
