1 A nd Job again took up his parable, and said,

Giobbe riprese il suo discorso e disse:

2 O h that I were as in the months of old, As in the days when God watched over me;

«Oh, potessi essere come nei mesi di un tempo, come nei giorni in cui Dio mi proteggeva,

3 W hen his lamp shined upon my head, And by his light I walked through darkness;

quando la sua lampada brillava sopra il mio capo e alla sua luce camminavo in mezzo alle tenebre;

4 A s I was in the ripeness of my days, When the friendship of God was upon my tent;

com'ero ai giorni della mia maturità, quando il consiglio segreto di Dio vegliava sulla mia tenda,

5 W hen the Almighty was yet with me, And my children were about me;

quando l'Onnipotente era ancora con me e i miei figli mi stavano intorno;

6 W hen my steps were washed with butter, And the rock poured me out streams of oil!

quando mi lavavo i piedi nel burro e la roccia versava per me ruscelli d'olio.

7 W hen I went forth to the gate unto the city, When I prepared my seat in the street,

Quando uscivo verso la porta della città e rizzavo il mio seggio in piazza,

8 T he young men saw me and hid themselves, And the aged rose up and stood;

i giovani, al vedermi, si tiravano in disparte, i vecchi si alzavano e rimanevano in piedi;

9 T he princes refrained from talking, And laid their hand on their mouth;

i principi smettevano di parlare e si mettevano la mano alla bocca;

10 T he voice of the nobles was hushed, And their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.

la voce dei capi si smorzava e la loro lingua si attaccava al palato.

11 F or when the ear heard me, then it blessed me; And when the eye saw me, it gave witness unto me:

L'orecchio che mi udiva, mi proclamava beato, e l'occhio che mi vedeva, mi rendeva testimonianza,

12 B ecause I delivered the poor that cried, The fatherless also, that had none to help him.

perché liberavo il povero che gridava in cerca di aiuto, e l'orfano che non aveva alcuno che l'aiutasse.

13 T he blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; And I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

La benedizione del morente scendeva su di me e facevo esultare il cuore della vedova.

14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: My justice was as a robe and a diadem.

Avevo indossato la giustizia ed essa mi rivestiva; la mia equità mi faceva da mantello e turbante.

15 I was eyes to the blind, And feet was I to the lame.

Ero occhi per il cieco e piedi per lo zoppo;

16 I was a father to the needy: And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.

ero un padre per i poveri e investigavo il caso che non conoscevo.

17 A nd I brake the jaws of the unrighteous, And plucked the prey out of his teeth.

Spezzavo le mascelle del malvagio e strappavo dai suoi denti la preda.

18 T hen I said, I shall die in my nest, And I shall multiply my days as the sand:

E pensavo: "Morirò nel mio nido e moltiplicherò i miei giorni come la sabbia;

19 M y root is spread out to the waters, And the dew lieth all night upon my branch;

le mie radici si stenderanno verso le acque, la rugiada rimarrà tutta la notte sul mio ramo;

20 M y glory is fresh in me, And my bow is renewed in my hand.

la mia gloria sarà sempre nuova in me e il mio arco acquisterà nuova forza nella mia mano.

21 U nto me men gave ear, and waited, And kept silence for my counsel.

Gli astanti mi ascoltavano in aspettazione e tacevano per udire il mio consiglio.

22 A fter my words they spake not again; And my speech distilled upon them.

Dopo che avevo parlato non replicavano, e le mie parole cadevano su di loro come gocce di rugiada.

23 A nd they waited for me as for the rain; And they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

Mi aspettavano come si aspetta la pioggia e spalancavano la loro bocca come per l'ultima pioggia.

24 I smiled on them, when they had no confidence; And the light of my countenance they cast not down.

Io sorridevo loro quando erano sfiduciati, e non potevano sminuire la luce del mio volto.

25 I chose out their way, and sat as chief, And dwelt as a king in the army, As one that comforteth the mourners.

Quando andavo da loro, mi sedevo come capo e stavo come un re tra le sue schiere, come uno che consola gli afflitti».
