1 T he word of Jehovah which came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations.

La parola dell'Eterno che fu rivolta al profeta Geremia contro le nazioni.

2 O f Egypt: concerning the army of Pharaoh-neco king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah.

Contro l'Egitto: riguardo all'esercito del Faraone Neko, re d'Egitto, che era presso il fiume Eufrate a Karkemish e che Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia, sconfisse nel quarto anno di Jehoiakim figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda.

3 P repare ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.

«Preparate lo scudo piccolo e grande e avvicinatevi alla battaglia.

4 H arness the horses, and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, put on the coats of mail.

Bardate i cavalli e, voi cavalieri, montateli; presentatevi con elmi, lucidate le lance indossate le corazze!

5 W herefore have I seen it? they are dismayed and are turned backward; and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: terror is on every side, saith Jehovah.

Che cosa vedo? Essi sono sbigottiti e si volgono indietro; i loro uomini prodi sono sconfitti e fuggono precipitosamente senza neppure voltarsi, tutt'intorno è terrore» dice l'Eterno.

6 L et not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; in the north by the river Euphrates have they stumbled and fallen.

«Non lasciare che il veloce sfugga né che il prode si metta in salvo. A nord presso il fiume Eufrate, vacillano e cadono.

7 W ho is this that riseth up like the Nile, whose waters toss themselves like the rivers?

Chi è colui che sale come il Nilo, e le cui acque si gonfiano come quelle dei fiumi?

8 E gypt riseth up like the Nile, and his waters toss themselves like the rivers: and he saith, I will rise up, I will cover the earth; I will destroy cities and the inhabitants thereof.

E l'Egitto che sale come il Nilo, e le cui acque si gonfiano come quelle dei fiumi. Egli dice: Salirò, ricoprirò la terra e distruggerò la città e i suoi abitanti

9 G o up, ye horses; and rage, ye chariots; and let the mighty men go forth: Cush and Put, that handle the shield; and the Ludim, that handle and bend the bow.

Caricate, o cavalli, e avanzate furiosamente, o carri; si facciano avanti gli uomini prodi, quei di Etiopia e di Putt che portano lo scudo e quei di Lud che maneggiano e tendono l'arco.

10 F or that day is a day of the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour and be satiate, and shall drink its fill of their blood; for the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

Questo giorno per il Signore, l'Eterno degli eserciti, è giorno di vendetta, per vendicarsi dei suoi nemici. La spada divorerà, si sazierà e si inebrierà del loro sangue, perché il Signore, l'Eterno degli eserciti, fa un sacrificio nel paese del nord, presso il fiume Eufrate.

11 G o up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt: in vain dost thou use many medicines; there is no healing for thee.

Sali a Galaad e prendi del balsamo, o vergine, figlia d'Egitto. Invano fai uso di molte medicine, non c'è guarigione per te.

12 T he nations have heard of thy shame, and the earth is full of thy cry; for the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty, they are fallen both of them together.

Le nazioni hanno saputo della tua ignominia e il tuo grido di dolore ha riempito la terra, perché il prode ha inciampato contro il prode e sono caduti insieme tutt'e due».

13 T he word that Jehovah spake to Jeremiah the prophet, how that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.

La parola che l'Eterno rivolse al profeta Geremia sulla venuta di Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia, per colpire il paese d'Egitto.

14 D eclare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Memphis and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand forth, and prepare thee; for the sword hath devoured round about thee.

Annunziatelo in Egitto, fatelo sapere a Migdol, fatelo sapere a Nof e a Tahpanhes. Dite: «Alzati e preparati, perché la spada divora tutto ciò che ti circonda».

15 W hy are thy strong ones swept away? they stood not, because Jehovah did drive them.

Perché i tuoi uomini valorosi sono atterrati? Non possono resistere perché l'Eterno li abbatte.

16 H e made many to stumble, yea, they fell one upon another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword.

Egli ne fa vacillare molti, cadono l'un sopra l'altro e dicono: «Su, torniamo al nostro popolo e al nostro paese nativo, lontano dalla spada micidiale».

17 T hey cried there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he hath let the appointed time pass by.

Là essi gridano: «Il Faraone, re d'Egitto, non è che un gran rumore, che ha lasciato passare il tempo stabilito».

18 A s I live, saith the King, whose name is Jehovah of hosts, surely like Tabor among the mountains, and like Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.

«Com'è vero che io vivo», dice il Re il cui nome è l'Eterno degli eserciti, «egli verrà come il Tabor fra le montagne, come il Karmel presso il mare.

19 O thou daughter that dwellest in Egypt, furnish thyself to go into captivity; for Memphis shall become a desolation, and shall be burnt up, without inhabitant.

Preparati il bagaglio per la cattività, o figlia che abiti in Egitto, perché Nof diventerà un deserto e sarà bruciata, e non vi abiterà piú nessuno.

20 E gypt is a very fair heifer; but destruction out of the north is come, it is come.

L'Egitto è come una giovenca bellissima, ma viene la distruzione, viene dal nord.

21 A lso her hired men in the midst of her are like calves of the stall; for they also are turned back, they are fled away together, they did not stand: for the day of their calamity is come upon them, the time of their visitation.

Anche i suoi mercenari che sono in mezzo ad essa sono come vitelli da ingrasso; anch'essi hanno voltato le spalle, fuggono insieme, non resistono, perché è piombato su di loro il giorno della loro calamità, il tempo della loro punizione.

22 T he sound thereof shall go like the serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.

La sua voce si muove come un serpente, perché essi avanzano con un esercito e vengono contro di essa con scuri, come tanti tagliaboschi.

23 T hey shall cut down her forest, saith Jehovah, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable.

Essi abbatteranno la sua foresta» dice l'Eterno, «benché sia impenetrabile, perché sono piú numerosi delle locuste, non si possono contare.

24 T he daughter of Egypt shall be put to shame; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

La figlia d'Egitto sarà coperta di vergogna, sarà data in mano del popolo del nord».

25 J ehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saith: Behold, I will punish Amon of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with her gods, and her kings; even Pharaoh, and them that trust in him:

L'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele, dice: «Ecco, io punirò Amon di No, il Faraone e l'Egitto, i suoi dèi e i suoi re il Faraone e quelli che confidano in lui;

26 a nd I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants; and afterwards it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith Jehovah.

li darò in mano di quelli che cercano la loro vita, in mano di Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia e in mano dei suoi servi ma dopo questo sarà abitato come nel passato», dice l'Eterno.

27 B ut fear not thou, O Jacob my servant, neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be quiet and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.

«Ma tu non temere, o mio servo Giacobbe, non ti sgomentare, o Israele, perché ecco, io ti salverò da lontano e la tua progenie dalla terra della sua cattività. Giacobbe ritornerà, non sarà piú molestato e sarà tranquillo, e nessuno piú lo spaventerà.

28 F ear not thou, O Jacob my servant, saith Jehovah; for I am with thee: for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee; but I will not make a full end of thee, but I will correct thee in measure, and will in no wise leave thee unpunished.

Non temere, o Giacobbe mio servo», dice l'Eterno, «perché io sono con te io annienterò tutte le nazioni fra le quali ti ho disperso, ma non annienterò te, ti castigherò con giusta misura e non ti lascerò del tutto impunito».
