1 I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

2 H e hath led me and caused me to walk in darkness, and not in light.

4 M y flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

5 H e hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.

Ha costruito bastioni contro di me, mi ha circondato di amarezza e di affanno.

6 H e hath made me to dwell in dark places, as those that have been long dead.

Mi ha fatto abitare in luoghi tenebrosi, come i morti da lungo tempo.

7 H e hath walled me about, that I cannot go forth; he hath made my chain heavy.

Mi ha costruito attorno un muro, perché non esca; ha reso pesante la mia catena.

8 Y ea, when I cry, and call for help, he shutteth out my prayer.

Anche quando grido e chiedo aiuto a gran voce, egli rifiuta di ascoltare la mia preghiera.

9 H e hath walled up my ways with hewn stone; he hath made my paths crooked.

Egli ha sbarrato le mie vie con pietre tagliate, ha reso i miei sentieri tortuosi.

10 H e is unto me as a bear lying in wait, as a lion in secret places.

Egli è stato per me come un orso in agguato, come un leone in luoghi nascosti.

11 H e hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces; he hath made me desolate.

Ha deviato le mie vie, mi ha dilaniato e mi ha reso desolato.

12 H e hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

Ha teso il suo arco e mi ha fatto il bersaglio delle sue frecce.

13 H e hath caused the shafts of his quiver to enter into my reins.

Ha fatto penetrare nel mio cuore le frecce della sua faretra.

14 I am become a derision to all my people, and their song all the day.

Sono diventato lo scherno di tutto il mio popolo, la sua canzone di tutto il giorno.

15 H e hath filled me with bitterness, he hath sated me with wormwood.

Mi ha saziato di amarezza, mi ha fatto bere assenzio,

16 H e hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones; he hath covered me with ashes.

Mi ha spezzato i denti con la ghiaia, mi ha coperto di cenere.

17 A nd thou hast removed my soul far off from peace; I forgat prosperity.

Hai allontanato la mia anima dalla pace, ho dimenticato il benessere.

18 A nd I said, My strength is perished, and mine expectation from Jehovah.

Ho detto: «E' scomparsa la mia fiducia e la mia speranza nell'Eterno».

19 R emember mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

Ricordati della mia afflizione e del mio vagare, dell'assenzio e dell'amarezza.

20 M y soul hath them still in remembrance, and is bowed down within me.

L'anima mia se ne ricorda del continuo ed è abbattuta dentro di me.

21 T his I recall to my mind; therefore have I hope.

Questo voglio richiamare alla mente e perciò voglio sperare.

22 I t is of Jehovah's lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

E' una grazia dell'Eterno che non siamo stati interamente distrutti, perché le sue compassioni non sono esaurite.

23 T hey are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness.

Si rinnovano ogni mattina; grande è la tua fedeltà.

24 J ehovah is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

«L'Eterno è la mia parte», dice l'anima mia, «perciò spererò in lui».

25 J ehovah is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

L'Eterno è buono con quelli che sperano in lui, con l'anima che lo cerca.

26 I t is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of Jehovah.

Buona cosa è aspettare in silenzio la salvezza dell'Eterno.

27 I t is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

Buona cosa è per l'uomo portare il giogo nella sua giovinezza.

28 L et him sit alone and keep silence, because he hath laid it upon him.

Sieda solitario e stia in silenzio quando Dio glielo impone.

29 L et him put his mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope.

Metta la sua bocca nella polvere, forse c'è ancora speranza.

30 L et him give his cheek to him that smiteth him; let him be filled full with reproach.

Porga la guancia a chi lo percuote, si sazi di vituperio.

31 F or the Lord will not cast off for ever.

Poiché il Signore non rigetta per sempre;

32 F or though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

ma, se affligge, avrà compassione, secondo la moltitudine delle sue misericordie,

33 F or he doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.

poiché non è volentieri che umilia ed affligge i figli degli uomini.

34 T o crush under foot all the prisoners of the earth,

Quando uno schiaccia sotto i suoi piedi tutti i prigionieri della terra,

35 T o turn aside the right of a man before the face of the Most High,

quando uno perverte il diritto di un uomo alla presenza dell'Altissimo.

36 T o subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.

quando si fa torto ad un uomo nella sua causa, il Signore non lo vede?

37 W ho is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?

Chi mai dice qualcosa che poi si avvera, se il Signore non la comandato?

38 O ut of the mouth of the Most High cometh there not evil and good?

Il male e il bene non procedono forse dalla bocca dell'Altissimo?

39 W herefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

Perché mai si lamenta un uomo vivente, un uomo per la punizione dei suoi peccati?

40 L et us search and try our ways, and turn again to Jehovah.

Esaminiamo le nostre vie, scrutiamole e ritorniamo all'Eterno.

41 L et us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

Eleviamo i nostri cuori e le nostre mani a Dio nei cieli.

42 W e have transgressed and have rebelled; thou hast not pardoned.

Noi abbiamo peccato, siamo stati ribelli e tu non hai perdonato.

43 T hou hast covered with anger and pursued us; thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.

Ti sei avvolto nell'ira e ci hai inseguito, hai ucciso senza pietà.

44 T hou hast covered thyself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.

Ti sei avvolto in una nuvola, perché nessuna preghiera potesse passare.

45 T hou hast made us an off-scouring and refuse in the midst of the peoples.

Ci hai reso spazzatura e rifiuto in mezzo al popoli.

46 A ll our enemies have opened their mouth wide against us.

Tutti i nostri nemici hanno spalancato la bocca contro di noi.

47 F ear and the pit are come upon us, devastation and destruction.

Ci sono venuti addosso terrore, laccio, desolazione e rovina.

48 M ine eye runneth down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

Rivi d'acqua scorrono dai miei occhi per la rovina della figlia del mio popolo.

49 M ine eye poureth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission,

Il mio occhio versa lacrime senza smettere, senza interruzione,

50 T ill Jehovah look down, and behold from heaven.

fino a quando l'Eterno non guardi dal cielo e non veda.

51 M ine eye affecteth my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.

Il mio occhio procura dolore alla mia anima per tutte le figlie della mia città.

52 T hey have chased me sore like a bird, they that are mine enemies without cause.

Quelli che mi odiano senza ragione mi hanno dato la caccia come a un uccello.

53 T hey have cut off my life in the dungeon, and have cast a stone upon me.

Hanno distrutto la mia vita nella fossa, mi hanno tirato pietre.

54 W aters flowed over my head; I said, I am cut off.

Le acque scorrevano sopra il mio capo, io dicevo: «E' finita per me».

55 I called upon thy name, O Jehovah, out of the lowest dungeon.

Ho invocato il tuo nome, o Eterno, dal fondo della fossa.

56 T hou heardest my voice; hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.

Tu hai udito la mia voce; non nascondere il tuo orecchio al mio sospiro, al mio grido di aiuto.

57 T hou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee; thou saidst, Fear not.

Quando ti ho invocato ti sei avvicinato; hai detto: «Non temere!».

58 O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

O Signore, tu hai difeso la causa a dell'anima mia, tu hai redento la mia vita.

59 O Jehovah, thou hast seen my wrong; judge thou my cause.

O Eterno, tu hai visto il torto da me subito, difendi la mia causa!

60 T hou hast seen all their vengeance and all their devices against me.

Hai visto tutto il loro spirito di vendetta, tutte le loro macchinazioni contro di me.

61 T hou hast heard their reproach, O Jehovah, and all their devices against me,

Hai udito i loro insulti, o Eterno, tutte le loro macchinazioni contro di me.

62 T he lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.

i discorsi di quelli che si levano contro di me, ciò che meditano contro di me tutto il giorno.

63 B ehold thou their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their song.

Osserva quando si siedono e quando si alzano, io sono la loro canzone.

64 T hou wilt render unto them a recompense, O Jehovah, according to the work of their hands.

Ripagali, o Eterno, secondo l'opera delle loro mani.

65 T hou wilt give them hardness of heart, thy curse unto them.

Rendili duri di cuore, la tua maledizione sia su di loro.

66 T hou wilt pursue them in anger, and destroy them from under the heavens of Jehovah.

Inseguili nella tua ira e distruggili da sotto i cieli dell'Eterno.
