1 A nd the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

2 S on of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;

«Figlio d'uomo, proponi un enigma e racconta una parabola alla casa d'Israele, e di'

3 a nd say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: A great eagle with great wings and long pinions, full of feathers, which had divers colors, came unto Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar:

Cosí dice il Signore l'Eterno: Una grande aquila dalle grandi ali e dalle lunghe penne, ricoperta di piume di svariati colori andò al Libano e tolse la cima di un cedro;

4 h e cropped off the topmost of the young twigs thereof, and carried it unto a land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants.

staccò il piú alto dei suoi ramoscelli, lo portò in un paese di commercio e lo pose in una città di mercanti.

5 H e took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful soil; he placed it beside many waters; he set it as a willow-tree.

Poi prese un po' di seme del paese e lo piantò in un campo fertile, lo collocò presso acque abbondanti e lo piantò come un salice.

6 A nd it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.

Esso crebbe e divenne una vite estesa ma bassa, i cui rami erano rivolti verso l'aquila, mentre le sue radici erano sotto di essa. Cosí diventò una vite che fece rami e mise fronde.

7 T here was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend its roots toward him, and shot forth its branches toward him, from the beds of its plantation, that he might water it.

Ma c'era un'altra grande aquila, dalle grandi ali e dalle molte piume, ed ecco questa vite rivolse le sue radici verso di essa e distese i suoi rami verso di essa perché l'irrigasse dal solco dov'era piantata.

8 I t was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.

Essa era piantata in un buon terreno presso acque abbondanti, perché potesse mettere rami, portare frutto e diventare una vite magnifica.

9 S ay thou, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it may wither; that all its fresh springing leaves may wither? and not by a strong arm or much people can it be raised from the roots thereof.

Di' Cosí dice il Signore l'Eterno. Potrà prosperare? L'aquila non sradicherà forse le sue radici e non taglierà via i suoi frutti per lasciare che si secchi? Cosí tutte le foglie che ha messo si seccheranno. Non ci vorrà tanta forza né molta gente per svellerla dalle radici.

10 Y ea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the beds where it grew.

Ecco, essa è piantata. Potrà prosperare? Non si seccherà forse completamente, quando il vento dell'est la toccherà? Seccherà nel solco dov'era cresciuta!».

11 M oreover the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

La parola dell'Eterno mi fu ancora rivolta, dicendo:

12 S ay now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and brought them to him to Babylon:

«Di' dunque a questa casa ribelle: Non capite cosa significano queste cose? Di' loro: Ecco, il re di Babilonia è venuto a Gerusalemme, ne ha preso il re e i capi e li ha condotti con sé a Babilonia.

13 a nd he took of the seed royal, and made a covenant with him; he also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land;

Poi ha preso uno di stirpe reale, ha stabilito un patto con lui e gli ha fatto prestare giuramento, Egli ha portato via anche gli uomini potenti del paese,

14 t hat the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.

perché il regno fosse abbassato e non si innalzasse ma, osservando il suo patto, potesse essere stabile.

15 B ut he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? shall he break the covenant, and yet escape?

Ma questi si è ribellato contro di lui mandando i suoi ambasciatori in Egitto, perché gli dessero cavalli e tanta gente. Potrà prosperare, potrà scampare chi ha fatto tali cose? Può rompere il patto e ciò nonostante scampare?

16 A s I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.

Com'è vero che io vivo», dice il Signore, l'Eterno, «egli morirà nel luogo dove dimora il re che lo ha fatto re e di cui ha disprezzato il giuramento e rotto il patto, vicino a lui, in mezzo a Babilonia.

17 N either shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company help him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts, to cut off many persons.

Faraone non gli presterà aiuto col suo potente esercito e con tanta gente in guerra, quando eleveranno terrapieni e costruiranno torri per sterminare molte vite umane.

18 F or he hath despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet hath done all these things; he shall not escape.

Egli ha disprezzato il giuramento infrangendo il patto; eppure ecco, dopo aver dato la mano, ha fatto tutte queste cose. Egli non scamperà».

19 T herefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, I will even bring it upon his own head.

Perciò cosí dice il Signore, l'Eterno: «Com'è vero che io vivo, il mio giuramento che ha disprezzato e il mio patto che ha infranto li farò ricadere sul suo capo.

20 A nd I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will enter into judgment with him there for his trespass that he hath trespassed against me.

Stenderò su di lui la mia rete e sarà preso nel mio laccio. Lo condurrò a Babilonia e là eseguirò il giudizio su di lui per il tradimento commesso contro di me.

21 A nd all his fugitives in all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward every wind: and ye shall know that I, Jehovah, have spoken it.

Tutti i fuggiaschi con le sue schiere cadranno di spada, mentre i superstiti saranno dispersi a tutti i venti. Cosí riconoscerete che io, l'Eterno, ho parlato».

22 T hus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will also take of the lofty top of the cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it upon a high and lofty mountain:

Cosí dice il Signore, l'Eterno: «Io prenderò un ramoscello dalla punta del cedro piú alto e lo pianterò; dalla cima dei suoi giovani rami staccherò un tenero ramoscello e lo pianterò sopra un monte alto ed elevato.

23 i n the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all birds of every wing; in the shade of the branches thereof shall they dwell.

Lo pianterò sull'alto monte d'Israele; metterà rami, porterà frutto e diventerà un cedro magnifico. Sotto di lui dimoreranno uccelli di ogni specie; essi dimoreranno all'ombra dei suoi rami,

24 A nd all the trees of the field shall know that I, Jehovah, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I, Jehovah, have spoken and have done it.

Cosí tutti gli alberi della campagna sapranno che io, l'Eterno, ho abbassato l'albero alto e innalzato l'albero basso, ho fatto seccare l'albero verde e fatto germogliare l'albero secco. Io, l'Eterno, ho parlato e lo farò».
