1 H owbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, And hearken to all my words.

“Mas agora, Jó, escute as minhas palavras; preste atenção a tudo o que vou dizer.

2 B ehold now, I have opened my mouth; My tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

Estou prestes a abrir a boca; minhas palavras estão na ponta da língua.

3 M y words shall utter the uprightness of my heart; And that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

Minhas palavras procedem de um coração íntegro; meus lábios falam com sinceridade o que eu sei.

4 T he Spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Almighty giveth me life.

O Espírito de Deus me fez; o sopro do Todo-poderoso me dá vida.

5 I f thou canst, answer thou me; Set thy words in order before me, stand forth.

Responda-me, então, se puder; prepare-se para enfrentar-me.

6 B ehold, I am toward God even as thou art: I also am formed out of the clay.

Sou igual a você diante de Deus; eu também fui feito do barro.

7 B ehold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, Neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

Por isso não lhe devo inspirar temor, e a minha mão não há de ser pesada sobre você.

8 S urely thou hast spoken in my hearing, And I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,

“Mas você disse ao meu alcance; eu ouvi bem as palavras:

9 I am clean, without transgression; I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me:

‘Estou limpo e sem pecado; estou puro e sem culpa.

10 B ehold, he findeth occasions against me, He counteth me for his enemy:

Contudo, Deus procurou em mim motivos para inimizade; ele me considera seu inimigo.

11 H e putteth my feet in the stocks, He marketh all my paths.

Ele acorrenta os meus pés; vigia de perto todos os meus caminhos’.

12 B ehold, I will answer thee, in this thou art not just; For God is greater than man.

“Mas eu lhe digo que você não está certo, porquanto Deus é maior do que o homem.

13 W hy dost thou strive against him, For that he giveth not account of any of his matters?

Por que você se queixa a ele de que não responde às palavras dos homens?

14 F or God speaketh once, Yea twice, though man regardeth it not.

Pois a verdade é que Deus fala, ora de um modo, ora de outro, mesmo que o homem não o perceba.

15 I n a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falleth upon men, In slumberings upon the bed;

Em sonho ou em visão durante a noite, quando o sono profundo cai sobre os homens e eles dormem em suas camas,

16 T hen he openeth the ears of men, And sealeth their instruction,

ele pode falar aos ouvidos deles e aterrorizá-los com advertências,

17 T hat he may withdraw man from his purpose, And hide pride from man;

para previnir o homem das suas más ações e livrá-lo do orgulho,

18 H e keepeth back his soul from the pit, And his life from perishing by the sword.

para preservar da cova a sua alma, e a sua vida da espada.

19 H e is chastened also with pain upon his bed, And with continual strife in his bones;

Ou o homem pode ser castigado no leito de dor, com os seus ossos em constante agonia,

20 S o that his life abhorreth bread, And his soul dainty food.

sendo levado a achar a comida repulsiva e a detestar na alma sua refeição preferida.

21 H is flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; And his bones that were not seen stick out.

Já não se vê sua carne, e seus ossos, que não se viam, agora aparecem.

22 Y ea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, And his life to the destroyers.

Sua alma aproxima-se da cova, e sua vida, dos mensageiros da morte.

23 I f there be with him an angel, An interpreter, one among a thousand, To show unto man what is right for him;

“Havendo, porém, um anjo ao seu lado, como mediador dentre mil, que diga ao homem o que é certo a seu respeito,

24 T hen God is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.

para ser-lhe favorável e dizer: ‘Poupa-o de descer à cova; encontrei resgate para ele’,

25 H is flesh shall be fresher than a child's; He returneth to the days of his youth.

então sua carne se renova voltando a ser como de criança; ele se rejuvenece.

26 H e prayeth unto God, and he is favorable unto him, So that he seeth his face with joy: And he restoreth unto man his righteousness.

Ele ora a Deus e recebe o seu favor; vê o rosto de Deus e dá gritos de alegria, e Deus lhe restitui a condição de justo.

27 H e singeth before men, and saith, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, And it profited me not:

Depois ele vem aos homens e diz: ‘Pequei e torci o que era certo, mas ele não me deu o que eu merecia.

28 H e hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit, And my life shall behold the light.

Ele resgatou a minha alma, impedindo-a de descer à cova, e viverei para desfrutar a luz’.

29 L o, all these things doth God work, Twice, yea thrice, with a man,

“Deus faz dessas coisas ao homem, duas ou três vezes,

30 T o bring back his soul from the pit, That he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

para recuperar sua alma da cova, a fim de que refulja sobre ele a luz da vida.

31 M ark well, O Job, hearken unto me: Hold thy peace, and I will speak.

“Preste atenção, Jó, e escute-me; fique em silêncio, e falarei.

32 I f thou hast anything to say, answer me: Speak, for I desire to justify thee.

Se você tem algo para dizer, responda-me; fale logo, pois quero que você seja absolvido.

33 I f not, hearken thou unto me: Hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.

Se não tem nada para dizer, ouça-me, fique em silêncio, e eu lhe ensinarei a sabedoria”.
