1 D ead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to send forth an evil odor; so doth a little folly outweigh wisdom and honor.

ذُبابٌ قَلِيلٌ مَيِّتٌ يُنتِنُ أطيَبَ العُطُورِ. وَيُمكِنُ لِحَماقَةٍ قَليلَةٍ أنْ تُفسِدَ الكَثِيرَ مِنَ الحِكمَةِ وَالكَرامَةِ.

2 A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.

أفكارُ الحَكِيمِ تَقُودُهُ إلَى الاسْتِقامَةِ. أمّا أفكارُ الأحْمَقِ فَتَقُودُهُ إلَى الانحِرافِ.

3 Y ea also, when the fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

الأحْمَقُ يُظهِرُ حُمقَهُ حَتَّى فِي مُجَرَّدِ سَيرِهِ فِي الطَّرِيقِ، وَهُوَ يُعلِنُ جَهلَهُ لِلجَمِيعِ.

4 I f the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for gentleness allayeth great offences.

لا تَترُكْ عَمَلَكَ لِمُجَرَّدِ أنَّ رَئِيسَكَ غَضِبَ عَلَيكَ، إذْ تَستَطِيعُ بِهُدُوئِكَ وَتَعاوُنِكَ أنْ تُصَحِّحَ أخطاءً كَبِيرَةً.

5 T here is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as it were an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

وَرَأيتُ ظَلْماً فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنيا، تِلكَ الأخطاءَ الَّتِي يَرتَكِبُها الحُكّامُ.

6 f olly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.

يُعطَى الحَمقَى مَناصِبَ عالِيَةً. أمّا الأغنِياءُ فَيَنزِلُونَ إلَى الحَضِيضِ.

7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking like servants upon the earth.

رَأيتُ عَبِيداً صارُوا سادَةً يَركَبُونَ الخَيلَ. وَرَأيتُ سادَةً صارُوا يَمشُونَ عَلَى الأرْضِ كَالعَبِيدِ. لِكُلِّ وَظِيفَةٍ مَخاطِرُها

8 H e that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a wall, a serpent shall bite him.

مَنْ يَحفِرُ حُفرَةً يَقَعُ فِيها. وَمَنْ يَهدِمُ حائِطاً تَلدَغُهُ حَيَّةٌ.

9 W hoso heweth out stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood is endangered thereby.

مَنْ يَقطَعُ حِجارَةً يَتَأذَّى بِها. وَمَنْ يَحْطِبُ الأشجارَ مُعَرَّضٌ لِلخَطَرِ.

10 I f the iron be blunt, and one do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

لَكِنَّ الحِكْمَةَ تَجعَلُ أيَّةَ وَظِيفَةٍ أكثَرَ سُهُولَةً. السِّكِّينُ غَيرُ الحادَّةِ لا تَقطَعُ، أمّا السِّكِّينُ المُسَنَّنَةُ فَتَقطَعُ جَيِّداً.

11 I f the serpent bite before it is charmed, then is there no advantage in the charmer.

إذا لَدَغَتِ الحّيَّةُ أحَداً فِي غِيابِ الحاوِي، فَما الفائِدَةُ مِنْ كُلِّ سِحرِهِ؟

12 T he words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

كَلِماتُ الحَكِيمِ تَعُودُ عَلَيهِ بِالمَدِيحِ، أمّا كَلِماتُ الأحْمَقِ فَتَعُودُ عَلَيهِ بِالدَّمارِ.

13 T he beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

يَبدَأُ الأحْمَقُ كَلامَهُ بِالحَماقاتِ، وَيُنهِي كَلامَهُ بِأشْياءَ جُنُونِيَّةٍ.

14 A fool also multiplieth words: yet man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?

لَكِنَّ الأحْمَقَ لا يَتَوَقَّفُ عَنِ الكَلامِ. ما مِنْ إنسانٍ يَعلَمُ ما سَيَحدُثُ، أوْ ما يُخَبِّئُهُ المُستَقبَلُ.

15 T he labor of fools wearieth every one of them; for he knoweth not how to go to the city.

يُجهِدُ الأحْمَقُ نَفسَهُ حَتَّى الإنهاكِ، وَهُوَ لا يَعرِفُ طَرِيقَهُ إلَى قَرْيَتِهِ. قِيمَةُ العَمَل

16 W oe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

وَيلٌ لِبَلَدٍ مَلِكُهُ وَلَدٌ، وَقادَتُهُ يَأْكُلُونَ وَيَشرَبُونَ إلَى الصَّباحِ.

17 H appy art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

وَهَنِيئاً لِبَلَدٍ مَلِكُهُ نَبِيلٌ، يَأكُلُ قادَتُهُ طَعامَهُمْ فِي وَقتِهِ لِلقُوَّةِ لا لِلسُّكْرِ.

18 B y slothfulness the roof sinketh in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.

سَقفُ الكُسَالَى لا بُدَّ أنْ يَهْبِطَ، وَبَعدَ ذَلِكَ يَنهارُ بِسَبَبِ تَراخِيهِمْ.

19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh glad the life; and money answereth all things.

يَأكُلُ النّاسُ الطَّعامَ لِيَضحَكُوا، وَيَشرَبُونَ الخَمْرَ لِيَفرَحُوا. لَكِنَّ المالَ يَحُلُّ كُلَّ أنواعِ المَشاكِلِ. الاسْتِغابَة

20 R evile not the king, no, not in thy thought; and revile not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the heavens shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

لا تَتَكَلَّمْ بِالسُّوءِ عَلَى المَلِكِ وَلا حَتَّى فِي فِكْرِكَ. وَلا تَتَكَلَّمْ بِالسُّوءِ عَلَى الأغنِياءِ، وَلا حَتَّى عَلَى فِراشِكَ. لِأنَّ طُيُورَ السَّماءِ تَنقُلُ الكَلامَ.
