1 A nd Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and Jericho. And they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lay there.

ثُمَّ أرسَلَ يَشُوعُ بْنُ نُونَ مِنْ مُخَيَّمِ شِطِّيمَ رَجُلَينِ لِيَسْتَكشِفا الأرْضَ سِرّاً، وَقالَ لَهُما: «اذْهَبا وَانْظُرا الأرْضَ، وَأرِيحا بِشَكلٍ خاصٍّ.» فَذَهَبا وَدَخَلا بَيْتَ عاهِرَةٍ اسْمُها راحابُ. وَقَضَيا الَّلَيلَةَ هُناكَ.

2 A nd it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to-night of the children of Israel to search out the land.

وَقِيلَ لِمَلِكِ أرِيحا: «أتَى رَجُلانِ مِنْ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ إلَى هُنا الَّليلَةَ لِيَتَجَسَّسا عَلَى الأرْضِ.»

3 A nd the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, that are entered into thy house; for they are come to search out all the land.

فَأرْسَلَ مَلِكُ أرِيحا رِسالَةً إلَى راحابَ يَقُولُ لَها فِيها: «أخْرِجِي الرَّجُلَينِ اللَّذَينِ أتَيا إلَى بَيتِكِ، لِأنَّهُما قَدْ أتَيا لِيَتَجَسَّسا عَلَى أرْضِنا كُلِّها.»

4 A nd the woman took the two men, and hid them; and she said, Yea, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were:

وَلَكِنَّ المَرأةَ كانَتْ قَدْ أخَذَتِ الرَّجُلَينِ وَخَبَّأتْهُما، فَقالَتْ: «هَذا صَحِيحٌ، أتَى رَجُلانِ إلَيَّ، وَلَمْ أعرِفْ مِنْ أينَ هُما،

5 a nd it came to pass about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; whither the men went I know not: pursue after them quickly; for ye will overtake them.

وَحِينَ أتَى وَقتُ إَغلاقِ البَوّابَةِ فِي المَساءِ خَرَجا، وَلا أعرِفُ أينْ ذَهَبا. الحَقُوا بِهِما بِسُرعَةٍ لِأنَّكُمْ تَستَطِيعُونَ الإمساكَ بِهِما.»

6 B ut she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

وَكانَتْ قَدْ أصْعَدَتْهُما إلَى السَّطحِ وَخَبَّأتْهُما بَينَ عِيدانِ الكِتّانِ الَّتِي كانَتْ قَدْ وَضَعَتْها هُناكَ.

7 A nd the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they that pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

فَلَحِقَ رِجالُ المَلِكِ بالرَّجُلينِ حَتَّى مَعابِرِ نَهرِ الأُردُنِّ. وَأُغلِقَتِ البَوّاباتُ فَورَ خُرُوجِ الَّذِينَ لَحِقُوهُما.

8 A nd before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

وَقَبلَ أنْ يَناما، صَعِدَتْ راحابُ إلَيهِما إلَى السَّطْحِ،

9 a nd she said unto the men, I know that Jehovah hath given you the land, and that the fear of you is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

وَقالَتْ لَهُما: «أعرِفُ أنَّ اللهَ أعطاكُمُ الأرْضَ. فَنَحْنُ مُرْتَعِبُونَ مِنْكُمْ، وجَمِيعُ السّاكِنِينَ فِي الأرْضِ يَذُوبُونَ خَوفاً بِسَبَبِكُمْ.

10 F or we have heard how Jehovah dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, unto Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

فَقَدْ سَمِعْنا أنَّ اللهَ يَبَّسَ ماءَ البَحْرِ الأحمَرِ أمامَكُمْ حِينَ خَرَجْتُمْ مِنْ مِصْرَ. وَسَمِعْنا بِما عَمِلتُمْ لِلمَلِكَينِ اللَّذَينِ كانا فِي شَرقِ نَهرِ الأُردُنِّ، سَيحُونَ وَعُوجَ اللَّذَينِ قَضَيتُمْ عَلَيهِما.

11 A nd as soon as we had heard it, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Jehovah your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

فَحِينَ سَمِعْنا بِهَذِهِ الأُمُورِ ارتَعَبْنا، وَلَمْ تَبقَ شَجاعَةٌ فِي قَلْبِ أحَدٍ مِنّا بِسَبَبِكُمْ. فَإلَهُكُمْ هُوَ إلَهُ السَّماءِ مِنْ فَوقُ وَإلَهُ الأرْضِ مِنْ تَحتُ.

12 N ow therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by Jehovah, since I have dealt kindly with you, that ye also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a true token;

وَالآنَ، أقسِما لِي بِاللهِ ، لِأنِّي عَمِلْتُ مَعْكُما إحساناً، بِأنَّكُما أنتُما أيضاً سَتَعمَلانِ إحْساناً لِعائِلَتِي. أكِّدا لِي تَماماً،

13 a nd that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.

بِأنَّكُما سَتَحفَظانِ حَياةَ أبِي وَأُمِّي وَإخوَتِي وَأخَواتِي وَكُلَّ ما يخصُّهُمْ. وَبِأنَّكُما سَتُخَلِّصانِ أنفُسَنا مِنَ المَوتِ.»

14 A nd the men said unto her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business; and it shall be, when Jehovah giveth us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

فَقالَ الرَّجُلانِ لَها: «نَفْديكُمْ بِحَياتِنا! فَإنْ لَمْ تُخبِرِي بِما نَعمَلُهُ، فَحِينَ يُعْطِينا اللهُ الأرْضَ، سَنَتَعامَلُ مَعَكِ بِوَفاءِ وَإحْسانٍ.»

15 T hen she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the side of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

فَأنزَلَتْهُمَ بِحَبلٍ مِنَ النّافِذَةِ لِأنَّ بَيتَها كانَ مَبنِيّاً عَلَى سُورِ المَدِينَةِ، وَقَدْ كانَتْ تَسكُنُ فِي السُّورِ.

16 A nd she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers light upon you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.

وَقالَتْ لَهُما: «اذْهَبا إلَى التِّلالِ كَي لا يَجِدَكُمُ الرِّجالُ الَّذِينَ يَبحَثُونَ عَنْكُمْ. اخْتَبِئا هُناكَ ثَلاثَةَ أيّامٍ إلَى أنْ يَعُودَ الَّذِينَ يَبحَثُونَ عَنْكُمْ إلَى المَدِينَةِ، وَبَعْدَ ذَلِكَ يُمكِنُكُما الذَّهابُ فِي طَرِيقِكُما.»

17 A nd the men said unto her, We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

وَقالَ الرَّجُلانِ لَها: «سَنَكُونُ بَرِيئَينِ مِنْ قَسَمِنا لَكِ الَّذِي جَعَلْتِنا نُقسِمُهُ،

18 B ehold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt gather unto thee into the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household.

إنْ جِئْنا لِكَي نَأخُذَ الأرْضَ، وَلَمْ تَرْبِطِي هَذا الحَبلَ القِرْمِزِيَّ الَّذِي أنزَلْتِنا بِهِ، وَلَمْ تَجمَعِي فِي بَيتِكِ أبِيكِ وَأُمَّكِ وَأُخوَتَكِ وَكُلَّ عائِلَتَكِ.

19 A nd it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

فَكُلُّ مَنْ يَخرُجُ مِنْهُمْ مِنْ بابِ بَيتِكِ إلَى الشّارِعِ سَيَكُونُ مَسؤُولاً عَنْ مَوْتِهِ. وَنَحنُ سَنَكُونُ بَرِيئَينِ. لَكِنْ إنْ تَأذَّى أحَدٌ داخِلَ بَيتِكِ، فَإنَّنا سَنَكُونُ مَسؤُولِينَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ.

20 B ut if thou utter this our business, then we shall be guiltless of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

وَإنْ كَشَفْتِ خِطَّتَنا، فَإنَّنا نَكُونُ بَرِيئَينِ مِنَ القَسَمِ الَّذِي جَعَلْتِنا نُقسِمُهُ لَكِ.»

21 A nd she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

فَقالَتْ: «اتَّفَقْنا!» وَأرسَلَتْهُما فَذَهَبا، ثُمَّ رَبَطَتِ الحَبلَ القِرْمِزِيَّ بَنافِذَتِها.

22 A nd they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.

فَغادَرا وَذَهَبا إلَى التِّلالِ، وَبَقِيا هُناكَ لِثَلاثَةِ أيّامٍ إلَى أنْ رَجِعَ الَّذِينَ كانُوا يَبحَثُونَ عَنْهُما إلَى أرِيحا، بَعدَ أنْ بَحَثُوا عَنْهُما فِي كُلِّ الطَّرِيقِ، وَلَمْ يَجِدُوهُما.

23 T hen the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had befallen them.

ثُمَّ نَزَلَ الرَّجُلانِ مِنَ التِّلالِ وَعَبَرا نَهْرَ الأُردُنِّ وَأتَيا إلَى يَشُوعَ بْنِ نُونَ وَأخبَراهُ بَكُلِّ ما حَدَثَ لَهُما.

24 A nd they said unto Joshua, Truly Jehovah hath delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land do melt away before us.

وَقالا لِيَشُوعَ: «قَدْ أعطانا اللهُ الأرْضَ كُلَّها! كُلُّ ساكِنِي الأرْضِ مُرتَعِبُونَ مِنّا.»
