1 I gnorate, fratelli (perché parlo a persone che hanno conoscenza della legge), che la legge ha potere sull'uomo per tutto il tempo che egli vive?

Christian brothers, I am sure you understand what I am going to say. You know all about the Law. The Law has power over a man as long as he lives.

2 I nfatti una donna sposata è per legge legata al marito finché egli vive, ma se il marito muore, ella è sciolta dalla legge del marito.

A married woman is joined by law to her husband as long as he lives. But if he dies, she is free from the law that joined her to him.

3 P erciò, se mentre vive il marito ella diventa moglie di un altro uomo, sarà chiamata adultera; ma quando il marito muore, ella è liberata da quella legge, per cui non è considerata adultera se diventa moglie di un altro uomo.

If she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is sinning by not being faithful in marriage. If her husband dies, she is free from the law that joined her to him. After that she can marry someone else. She does not sin if she marries another man.

4 C osì dunque, fratelli miei, anche voi siete morti alla legge mediante il corpo di Cristo per appartenere ad un altro, che è risuscitato dai morti, affinché portiamo frutti a Dio.

My Christian brothers, that is the way it is with you. You were under the power of the Law. But now you are dead to it because you are joined to another. You are joined to Christ Who was raised from the dead. This is so we may be what God wants us to be. Our lives are to give fruit for Him.

5 I nfatti, mentre eravamo nella carne, le passioni peccaminose che erano mosse dalla legge operavano nelle nostre membra, portando frutti per la morte,

When we lived to please our bodies, those sinful desires were pulling at us all the time. We always wanted to do what the Law said not to do. Living that kind of life brings death,

6 m a ora siamo stati sciolti dalla legge, essendo morti a ciò che ci teneva soggetti, per cui serviamo in novità di spirito e non il vecchio sistema della lettera.

but now we are free from the Law. We are dead to sin that once held us in its power. No longer do we follow the Law which is the old way. We now follow the new way, the way of the Spirit.

7 C he diremo dunque? Che la legge è peccato? Cosí non sia; anzi io non avrei conosciuto il peccato, se non mediante la legge; infatti io non avrei conosciuta la concupiscenza, se la legge non avesse detto: «Non concupire».

Then what are we saying? Is the Law sinful? No, not at all! But it was the Law that showed me what sin is. I did not know it was sin to follow wrong desires, but the Law said, “You must not follow wrong desires.”

8 I l peccato invece, presa occasione da questo comandamento, ha prodotto in me ogni concupiscenza,

The Law made me know how much I was sinning. It showed me how I had a desire for all kinds of things. For without the Law, sin is dead.

9 p erché senza la legge, il peccato è morto. Ci fu un tempo in cui io vivevo senza la legge, ma essendo venuto il comandamento, il peccato prese vita ed io morii,

I was once alive. That was when I did not know what the Law said I had to do. Then I found that I had broken the Law. I knew I was a sinner. Death was mine because of the Law.

10 e trovai che proprio il comandamento, che è in funzione della vita, mi era motivo di morte.

The Law was supposed to give me new life. Instead, it gave me death.

11 I nfatti il peccato, colta l'occasione per mezzo del comandamento, mi ingannò e mediante quello mi uccise.

Sin found a way to trap me by working through the Law. Then sin killed me by using the Law.

12 C osí, la legge è certamente santa, e il comandamento santo, giusto e buono.

The Law is holy. Each one of the Laws is holy and right and good.

13 C iò che è buono è dunque diventato morte per me? Cosí non sia; anzi il peccato mi è diventato morte, affinché appaia che il peccato produce in me la morte per mezzo di ciò che è buono, affinché il peccato divenisse estremamente peccaminoso per mezzo del comandamento,

Then does it mean that the Law, which is good, brought death to me? No, not at all! It was sin that did it. Sin brought death to me by the Law that is good. In that way, sin was shown to be what it is. So because of the Law, sin becomes much more sinful.

14 I nfatti noi sappiamo che la legge è spirituale, ma io sono carnale, venduto come schiavo al peccato.

We know that the Law is right and good, but I am a person who does what is wrong and bad. I am not my own boss. Sin is my boss.

15 G iacché non capisco quel che faccio, perché non faccio quello che vorrei, ma faccio quello che odio.

I do not understand myself. I want to do what is right but I do not do it. Instead, I do the very thing I hate.

16 O ra, se faccio ciò che non voglio, io riconosco che la legge è buona.

When I do the thing I do not want to do, it shows me that the Law is right and good.

17 Q uindi non sono piú io ad agire, ma è il peccato che abita in me.

So I am not doing it. Sin living in me is doing it.

18 I nfatti io so che in me, cioè nella mia carne, non abita alcun bene, poiché ben si trova in me la volontà di fare il bene, ma io non trovo il modo di compierlo.

I know there is nothing good in me, that is, in my flesh. For I want to do good but I do not.

19 I nfatti il bene che io voglio, non lo faccio; ma il male che non voglio, quello faccio.

I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I am always doing the sinful things I do not want to do.

20 O ra, se faccio ciò che non voglio, non sono piú io che lo faccio, ma è il peccato che abita in me.

If I am always doing the very thing I do not want to do, it means I am no longer the one who does it. It is sin that lives in me.

21 I o scopro dunque questa legge: che volendo fare il bene, in me è presente il male.

This has become my way of life: When I want to do what is right, I always do what is wrong.

22 I nfatti io mi diletto nella legge di Dio secondo l'uomo interiore,

My mind and heart agree with the Law of God.

23 m a vedo un'altra legge nelle mie membra, che combatte contro la legge della mia mente e che mi rende schiavo della legge del peccato che è nelle mie membra.

But there is a different law at work deep inside of me that fights with my mind. This law of sin holds me in its power because sin is still in me.

24 O miserabile uomo che sono! Chi mi libererà da questo corpo di morte?

There is no happiness in me! Who can set me free from my sinful old self?

25 I o rendo grazie a Dio per mezzo di Gesú Cristo, nostro Signore. Io stesso dunque con la mente servo la legge di Dio, ma con la carne la legge del peccato.

God’s Law has power over my mind, but sin still has power over my sinful old self. I thank God I can be free through Jesus Christ our Lord!
