1 P oi Sansone andò a Gaza e là vide una prostituta, ed entrò da lei.

Samson went to Gaza and saw a woman who sold the use of her body there. He went in to her.

2 Q uando fu detto a quei di Gaza: «Sansone è venuto qui», essi circondarono il luogo e stettero in agguato tutta la notte presso la porta della città, e rimasero in silenzio tutta la notte, dicendo: «Allo spuntar del giorno lo uccideremo».

The Gazites were told, “Samson has come here.” So they gathered around the place and waited for him all night at the gate of the city. They were quiet all night, saying, “Let us wait until the morning light. Then we will kill him.”

3 S ansone rimase coricato fino a mezzanotte; poi a mezzanotte si alzò, afferrò i battenti della porta della città e i due stipiti, li divelse insieme con la sbarra, se li caricò sulle spalle e li portò in cima al monte che si trova di fronte a Hebron.

But Samson lay until late at night. Then he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate and the pieces that held them. He pulled them up together with the locks and put them on his shoulders. And he carried them up to the top of the mountain beside Hebron.

4 D opo questo si innamorò di una donna della valle di Sorek, che si chiamava Delilah.

After this Samson loved a woman in the valley of Sorek. Her name was Delilah.

5 A llora i principi dei Filistei salirono da lei e le dissero: «Seducilo e scopri dove risiede la sua grande forza e come riuscire a sopraffarlo per poterlo legare e domare; poi ti daremo ciascuno millecento sicli d'argento.

The leaders of the Philistines came to her, saying, “Tempt Samson to tell you the secret of his powerful strength. Find out how we can get power over him so we can tie him and hold him. Then we will each give you 1, 100 pieces of silver.”

6 C osì Delilah disse a Sansone: «Dimmi, ti prego, dove risiede la tua grande forza, e in che modo ti si potrebbe legare per domarti».

So Delilah said to Samson, “I beg you. Tell me the secret of your powerful strength. Tell me how one can get power over you and tie you up and hold you.”

7 S ansone le rispose: «Se mi legano con sette corde d'arco fresche, non ancora asciutte, io diventerei debole e sarei come un qualsiasi altro uomo».

Samson said to her, “They must tie me with seven new ropes that have not been dried. Then I will become weak and be like any other man.”

8 A llora i principi dei Filistei le portarono sette corde d'arco fresche, non ancora asciutte, ed ella lo legò con esse.

So the leaders of the Philistines brought her seven new ropes that had not been dried. And Delilah tied Samson with them.

9 O r c'erano degli uomini in agguato presso di lei, in una camera interna. Ella gli disse: Sansone, i Filistei ti sono addosso!». Ma egli ruppe le corde, come si rompe un fil di stoppa quando sente il fuoco. Così il segreto della sua forza rimase sconosciuto.

She had men hiding and waiting in another room. She said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he broke the ropes like a string breaks when it touches fire. So they did not find the secret of his strength.

10 P oi Delilah disse a Sansone: «Ecco, ti sei preso gioco di me e mi hai raccontato bugie; or dunque, ti prego, dimmi con che ti si potrebbe legare».

Delilah said to Samson, “See, you have fooled me and told me lies. Now tell me, I beg you, how can you be tied?”

11 E gli le rispose: «Se mi legano con funi nuove che non sono mai state adoperate, io diventerei debole e sarei come qualsiasi altro uomo».

Samson said to her, “They must tie me with new ropes which have never been used. Then I will become weak and be like any other man.”

12 P erciò Delilah prese delle funi nuove, lo legò e gli disse: «Sansone, i Filistei ti sono addosso». Or c'erano degli uomini in agguato nella camera interna. Ma egli ruppe come un filo le funi che aveva alle braccia.

So Delilah took new ropes, tied Samson with them, and said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” Men were hiding and waiting in another room. But Samson broke the ropes from his arms like a string.

13 A llora Delilah disse a Sansone: «Fino ad ora ti sei preso gioco di me e mi hai raccontato bugie; dimmi con che ti si potrebbe legare». Ed egli le rispose: «Non dovresti che intrecciare le sette trecce del mio capo con l'ordito».

Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have fooled me and told me lies until now. Tell me how you can be tied.” Samson said to her, “You must work the seven strings of my hair into the cloth you are making and hold it there with a nail. Then I will become weak and be like any other man.”

14 E ssa le intrecciò e le fissò al subbio, poi gli disse: Sansone, i Filistei ti sono addosso». Ma egli si svegliò dal sonno e strappò via il subbio dal telaio e l'ordito.

So while Samson slept, Delilah took the seven strings of his hair and worked them into the cloth. She held it in place with the nail. Then she said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he awoke from his sleep and pulled away the nail, the cloth maker and the cloth.

15 A llora ella gli disse: Come puoi dirmi: "Ti amo", mentre il tuo cuore non è con me? Già tre volte ti sei preso gioco di me e non mi hai detto dove risiede la tua grande forza».

Delilah said to Samson, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have lied to me these three times. You have not told me the secret of your powerful strength.”

16 O ra, poiché essa lo importunava ogni giorno con le sue parole e lo sollecitava con insistenza, egli ne fu irritato a morte,

She asked him day after day until his soul was troubled to death.

17 e le aperse tutto il cuore e le disse: «Non è mai passato rasoio sulla mia testa, perché sono un Nazireo a Dio, dal seno di mia madre; se fossi rasato, la mia forza se ne andrebbe, diventerei debole e sarei come qualsiasi altro uomo».

So he told her all that was in his mind. He said to her, “My hair has never been cut. For I have been a Nazirite to God from the time I was born. If my hair is cut, my strength will leave me. I will become weak and be like any other man.”

18 Q uando Delilah si rese conto che egli le aveva aperto tutto il cuore, mandò a chiamare i principi dei Filistei e fece dir loro: «Venite su questa volta, perché egli mi ha aperto tutto il suo cuore». Allora i principi dei Filistei salirono da lei e portarono con sé il denaro.

Delilah saw that Samson had told her the truth. She sent and called the leaders of the Philistines, saying, “Come once again. For he has told me all he knows.” So the leaders of the Philistines came to her. And they brought the money in their hands.

19 E lla lo addormentò quindi sulle sue ginocchia, chiamò un uomo e gli fece radere le sette trecce della testa di Sansone; poi cominciò a maltrattarlo, e la sua forza lo lasciò.

She made Samson sleep on her knees. Then she called for a man to cut off the seven parts of Samson’s hair. She began to hurt Samson, and his strength left him.

20 A llora ella gli disse: «Sansone, i Filistei ti sono addosso». Egli si svegliò dal sonno e disse: «Io ne uscirò come tutte le altre volte e mi svincolerò». Ma non sapeva che l'Eterno si era ritirato da lui.

She said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” He awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as I have at other times. I will shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.

21 E i Filistei lo presero e gli cavarono gli occhi; lo fecero scendere a Gaza e lo legarono con catene di bronzo. E fu posto a girare la macina nella prigione.

The Philistines took hold of him and cut out his eyes. They brought him down to Gaza and tied him with brass chains. Samson was made to grind grain in the prison.

22 I ntanto i capelli del capo, dopo essere stati rasati, cominciavano nuovamente a crescere.

But the hair of his head started to grow again after it was cut off. The Death of Samson

23 O ra i principi dei Filistei si radunarono per offrire un gran sacrificio a Dagon, loro dio, e per rallegrarsi. Dicevano: «Il nostro dio ci ha dato nelle mani Sansone, nostro nemico».

Now the leaders of the Philistines gathered to give a large gift to their god Dagon. They were happy, for they said, “Our god has given us Samson, the man who has fought against us.”

24 Q uando il popolo lo vide, cominciò a lodare il suo dio e a dire: «Il nostro dio ci ha dato nelle mani il nostro nemico, colui che devastava il nostro paese e che ha ucciso tanti di noi».

The people praised their god when they saw Samson. They said, “Our god has given us the one who fought against us, destroyed our country, and killed many of us.”

25 C osì nella gioia del loro cuore, dissero: «Fate venire Sansone, perché ci faccia divertire!». Fecero quindi uscire Sansone dalla prigione, ed egli fece il buffone avanti a loro. Poi lo misero fra le colonne.

After the people had had much to drink, they said, “Bring Samson here so we can have some fun with him.” So they called Samson out of prison and made fun of him. They made him stand between the stone pillars that held up the building.

26 A llora Sansone disse al fanciullo, che lo teneva per la mano: «Lasciami toccare le colonne sulle quali posa la casa,

Samson said to the boy who was holding his hand, “Let me feel the tall pillars that hold up the building. I want to rest against them.”

27 p erché possa appoggiarmi ad esse». Or la casa era gremita di uomini e donne vi erano tutti i principi dei Filistei, e sul tetto c'erano tremila persone fra uomini e donne, che stavano a guardare mentre Sansone faceva il buffone.

Now the building was full of men and women. All the leaders of the Philistines were there, and there were about 3, 000 men and women on the roof looking down and laughing at Samson.

28 A llora Sansone invocò l'Eterno e disse: «O Signore, o Eterno ti prego ricordati di me! Dammi forza per questa volta soltanto, o DIO, perché possa vendicarmi con un sol colpo dei Filistei per la perdita dei miei due occhi».

Then Samson called to the Lord and said, “O Lord God, I beg You. Remember me. Give me strength only this once, O God. So I may now punish the Philistines for my two eyes.”

29 S ansone afferrò quindi le due colonne centrali, che sostenevano il tempio e si appoggiò ad esse, a una con la destra, e all'altra con la sinistra;

Samson took hold of the two center pillars that held up the building. He pushed against them, with his right hand on one and his left hand on the other.

30 p oi Sansone disse: «Che io muoia insieme ai Filistei!». Si curvò poi con tutta la sua forza, e la casa crollò addosso ai principi e a tutto il popolo che vi era dentro; e furono piú quelli che egli uccise morendo di quelli che aveva ucciso in vita.

Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his strength so that the building fell on the leaders and all the people in it. He killed more at his death than he killed in his life.

31 P oi suoi fratelli e tutta la casa di suo padre scesero e lo portarono via; e andarono a seppellirlo fra Tsorah ed Eshtaol nel sepolcro di Manoah suo padre. Egli era stato giudice d'Israele per vent'anni.

Then his brothers and all those of his father’s house came and took him. They brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the grave of his father Manoah. Samson had ruled Israel for twenty years.
