1 A vendo dunque queste promesse, carissimi, purifichiamoci da ogni contaminazione di carne e di spirito. compiendo la nostra santificazione nel timore di Dio.

Since we have these great promises, dear friends, let us turn away from every sin of the body or of the spirit. Let us honor God with love and fear by giving ourselves to Him in every way. His Love for the Corinthians

2 A ccoglieteci; noi non abbiamo fatto torto ad alcuno, non abbiamo corrotto alcuno, non abbiamo frodato alcuno.

Receive us into your hearts. We have done no wrong to anyone. We have not led anyone in the wrong way. We have not used anyone for our good.

3 I o non lo dico a vostra condanna, perché vi ho già detto prima che voi siete nei nostri cuori, per morire insieme e vivere insieme.

I do not say this to tell you that you are wrong. As I have said before, you have a place in our hearts and always will. If we live or die, we will be together.

4 I o uso una grande franchezza con voi e ho molto di che gloriarmi di voi; sono ripieno di consolazione e sovrabbondo di gioia in mezzo a tutta la nostra afflizione.

I trust you and am proud of you. You give me much comfort and joy even when I suffer.

5 D a quando infatti siamo arrivati in Macedonia, la nostra carne non ha avuto requie alcuna, ma siamo stati afflitti in ogni maniera: combattimenti di fuori, paure di dentro.

When we arrived in the country of Macedonia, we had no rest. We had all kinds of trouble. There was fighting all around us. Our hearts were afraid.

6 M a Dio, che consola gli afflitti, ci ha consolati con la venuta di Tito,

But God gives comfort to those whose hearts are heavy. He gave us comfort when Titus came.

7 e non solo con la sua venuta, ma anche con la consolazione da lui ricevuta tra di voi; egli ci ha riferito della vostra grande affezione, del vostro pianto e del vostro zelo per me, per cui mi sono ancor piú rallegrato,

Not only did his coming comfort us, but the comfort you had given him made me happy also. He told us how much you wanted to see us. He said that you were sad because of my trouble and that you wanted to help me. This made me happy.

8 p erché, anche se vi ho contristato con quell'epistola, ora non me ne dispiace anche se mi è dispiaciuto, poiché vedo che quell'epistola, quantunque per breve tempo, vi ha rattristati.

I am not sorry now if my letter made you sad. I know it made you sad, but it was only for awhile.

9 O ra mi rallegro, non perché siete stati rattristati, ma perché siete stati rattristati a ravvedimento, poiché siete stati rattristati secondo Dio, affinché in nessuna cosa aveste a ricevere alcun danno da parte nostra.

I am happy now. It is not because you were hurt by my letter, but because it turned you from sin to God. God used it and you were not hurt by what we did.

10 L a tristezza secondo Dio infatti produce ravvedimento a salvezza, che non ha rimpianto; ma la tristezza del mondo produce la morte.

The sorrow that God uses makes people sorry for their sin and leads them to turn from sin so they can be saved from the punishment of sin. We should be happy for that kind of sorrow, but the sorrow of this world brings death.

11 I nfatti, ecco quanta premura ha prodotto in voi l'essere stati rattristati secondo Dio, anzi quale scuse, quale sdegno, quale timore, quale grande affezione quale zelo, quale soddisfazione! In ogni maniera voi avete dimostrato che siete puri in quest'affare.

See how this sorrow God allowed you to have has worked in you. You had a desire to be free of that sin I wrote about. You were angry about it. You were afraid. You wanted to do something about it. In every way you did what you could to make it right.

12 A nche se vi ho scritto, non l'ho fatto né per colui che ha fatto l'offesa né per colui che l'ha ricevuta, ma affinché la nostra premura per voi fosse manifestata in mezzo a voi davanti a Dio.

I sent this. It was not written only because of the man who did the wrong or because of the one who suffered.

13 P erciò noi siamo stati consolati a motivo della vostra consolazione e ci siamo tanto piú rallegrati per la gioia di Tito, perché il suo spirito è stato ricreato da voi tutti.

All this has given us comfort. More than this, we are happy for the joy Titus has. His spirit has been made stronger by all of you.

14 P er questo se in qualche cosa mi sono gloriato di voi con lui, non sono stato confuso ma, come vi abbiamo detto tutte le cose in verità, cosí anche ciò di cui ci eravamo gloriati con Tito è risultato verità.

I told him how proud I was of you. You did not make me ashamed. What we said to Titus proved to be true.

15 E d egli ha un grande affetto per voi, ricordandosi dell'ubbidienza di voi tutti e del come l'avete ricevuto con timore e tremore.

He loves you all the more. He remembers how all of you were ready to obey and how you respected him.

16 I o mi rallegro dunque che in ogni cosa mi posso confidare in voi.

I am happy that I can have complete trust in you.
