1 Q uando Balaam si avvide che agli occhi dell'Eterno era buono benedire Israele, non ricorse come le altre volte all'uso di sortilegi, ma voltò la faccia verso il deserto.

Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to speak good of Israel. So he did not go, as at other times, and look for special things to see. Instead he looked toward the desert.

2 E , alzati gli occhi, Balaam vide Israele accampato tribù per tribù, e lo Spirito di DIO venne su di lui.

Balaam looked up and saw Israel living in their tents by their families. And the Spirit of God came upon him.

3 A llora pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Così dice Balaam, figlio di Beor, così dice l'uomo i cui occhi sono stati aperti,

He began speaking and said, “Balaam the son of Beor is the man whose eye is opened.

4 c osì dice colui che ode le parole di Dio, colui che mira la visione dell'Onnipotente, colui che cade, ma ha gli occhi aperti:

He hears the words of God. He sees what the All-powerful wants him to see. He falls down, but has his eyes open.

5 " Come sono belle le tue tende, o Giacobbe, le tue dimore, o Israele!

How fair are your tents, O Jacob, and your homes, O Israel!

6 E sse si estendono come valli, come giardini lungo un fiume, come aloe che l'Eterno ha piantati, come cedri vicini alle acque.

They are like valleys that spread out, and like gardens beside the river. They are like aloes planted by the Lord, and like cedars beside the waters.

7 V erserà acqua dalle sue secchie, la sua progenie abiterà presso molte acque, il suo re si ergerà più in alto di Agag e il suo regno sarà esaltato.

Water will flow from his pails. His seed will be by many waters. His king will be more powerful than Agag, and his nation will be honored.

8 D io, che lo ha fatto uscire dall'Egitto, è per lui come le corna poderose del bufalo. Egli divorerà nazioni che gli sono nemiche, frantumerà le loro ossa e le trafiggerà con le sue frecce.

God brings him out of Egypt. He is for him like the horns of the wild bull. He will destroy the nations who fight against him. He will crush their bones in pieces and cut through them with his arrows.

9 E gli si china, si accovaccia come un leone; e come una leonessa: chi oserà farlo alzare? Sia benedetto chi ti benedice e sia maledetto chi ti maledice!"»

He bows down. He lies down like a lion. And as a lion, who will wake him? Good will come to everyone who prays for you. And cursed is everyone who curses you.”

10 A llora l'ira di Balak si accese contro Balaam; così egli battè le mani e Balak disse a Balaam: «Io ti ho chiamato per maledire i miei nemici, ed ecco tu li hai benedetti per ben tre volte.

Then Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he hit his hands together. Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse those who hate me. But see, you have done nothing but pray that good would come to them these three times!

11 O r dunque fuggi a casa tua! Avevo detto che ti avrei colmato di onori; ma ecco, l'Eterno ti ha impedito di riceverli».

So now run away to your place. I said I would give you much honor, but the Lord has kept you from honor.”

12 C osì Balaam rispose a Balak: «Non avevo forse parlato agli ambasciatori che mi avevi mandato, dicendo:

Then Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not tell the men you had sent to me,

13 " Anche se Balak mi dovesse dare la sua casa piena d'argento e d'oro, non potrei trasgredire l'ordine dell'Eterno per fare sia bene che male di mia propria iniziativa, ma dovrò dire ciò che l'Eterno dirà"?

‘Even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot do anything against the Word of the Lord’? I said, ‘I cannot do good or bad because I want to. What the Lord says, I will say.’

14 E d ecco, ora ritornerò al mio popolo; vieni, io ti annunzierò ciò che questo popolo farà al tuo popolo negli ultimi giorni».

Now see, I am going to my people. Come, I will tell you what this people will do to your people in the days to come.” Balaam Tells What Will Happen the Fourth Time

15 A llora pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Così dice Balaam figlio di Beor, così dice l'uomo i cui occhi sono stati aperti,

Then he began speaking and said, “Balaam the son of Beor is the man whose eye is opened.

16 c osì dice colui che ode le parole di Dio, che conosce la scienza dell'Altissimo che mira la visione dell'Onnipotente, colui che cade, ma ha gli occhi aperti:

He hears the words of God. He knows what the Most High wants him to know. He sees what the All-powerful wants him to see. He falls down, but has his eyes open.

17 L o vedo, ma non ora; lo contemplo, ma non vicino: una stella sorgerà da Giacobbe e uno scettro si alzerà da Israele, che schiaccerà Moab da un capo all'altro e abbatterà tutti i figli di Sceth.

I see him, but not now. I see him, but he is not near. A star will come out of Jacob. A special stick of power will rise from Israel. It will crush the forehead of Moab, and break down all the sons of Sheth.

18 E dom diventerà sua proprietà e anche Seir, suo nemico, diventerà sua proprietà: Israele farà prodezze.

It will take the land of Edom. And it will take the land of Seir, who fights against Israel. And Israel will fight with much power.

19 D a Giacobbe verrà un dominatore che sterminerà i superstiti delle città».

One from Jacob will rule. He will destroy from the city all who are left alive.”

20 P oi guardò su Amalek e pronunciò il suo oracolo, dicendo: «Amalek era la prima delle nazioni, ma la sua fine culminerà in rovina».

Then Balaam looked at Amalek and said, “Amalek was the first of the nations. But he will be destroyed in the end.”

21 G uardò anche sui Kenei e pronunciò il suo oracolo, dicendo: «La tua dimora è solida e il tuo nido è posto nella roccia;

Then he looked at the Kenite and said, “The place where you live is strong. Your nest is set in the rock.

22 n ondimeno il Keneo dovrà essere devastato, finche l'Assiro ti porterà in cattività».

But Kain will be destroyed. How long will Asshur keep you against your will?”

23 P oi pronunciò di nuovo il suo oracolo e disse: «Ahimè! Chi sussisterà quando Dio compirà questo?

Then Balaam said, “Who can live when God does this?

24 M a delle navi verranno da Kittim; esse umilieranno Assur e umilieranno Eber, ed egli pure finirà per essere distrutto».

But ships will come from Kittim. They will bring trouble to Asshur and Eber, but they will be destroyed also.”

25 P oi Balaam si levò, partì e fece ritorno a casa sua, e anche Balak se ne andò per la sua strada.

Then Balaam got up and left. He returned to his place, and Balak went on his way.
