1 Q uando Festo giunse nella provincia, tre giorni dopo salí da Cesarea a Gerusalemme.

Three days after Festus had become leader in the country, he went from the city of Caesarea to Jerusalem.

2 I l sommo sacerdote e i capi dei Giudei gli presentarono le loro accuse contro Paolo e lo supplicavano,

The head religious leaders and the leaders of the Jews told Festus what they had against Paul.

3 c hiedendogli nei riguardi di Paolo il favore di farlo trasferire a Gerusalemme; cosí essi lo avrebbero ucciso in un'imboscata lungo la strada.

They asked Festus for a favor. They wanted Paul to be brought to Jerusalem because they had plans to kill him on the way.

4 M a Festo rispose che Paolo era custodito a Cesarea, e che egli stesso sarebbe presto andato là.

Festus told them that Paul was to be kept in Caesarea and that he would be going there soon.

5 « Perciò le persone influenti tra di voi», disse egli, «scendano con me; e se vi è alcuna colpa in quest'uomo, lo accusino».

Festus said, “If Paul has done anything wrong, let your leaders go along with me and say what they have against him.”

6 F ermatosi tra loro non piú di otto o dieci giorni, Festo discese a Cesarea; il giorno seguente sedette in tribunale e ordinò che gli fosse portato Paolo.

After staying with them about ten days, Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he sat in the courtroom and asked for Paul to be brought in.

7 Q uando egli giunse, i Giudei che erano discesi da Gerusalemme lo attorniarono, portando contro a Paolo molte e gravi accuse, che però non potevano provare.

Paul came into the courtroom. The Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him. They said many bad things against him. But they could not prove any of the things they said.

8 P aolo diceva a sua difesa: «Io non ho peccato né contro la legge dei Giudei né contro il tempio né contro Cesare».

Paul spoke for himself, saying, “I have done nothing wrong against the Law of the Jews or against the house of God or against Caesar.”

9 M a Festo, volendo far cosa grata ai Giudei, rispose a Paolo e disse: «Vuoi tu salire a Gerusalemme per esservi giudicato davanti a me intorno a queste cose?».

Festus was hoping to get the respect of the Jews. He asked Paul, “Will you go to the court in Jerusalem and let me say if you are guilty or not about these things?”

10 A llora Paolo disse: «Io sto davanti al tribunale di Cesare, dove devo essere giudicato, io non ho fatto alcun torto ai Giudei, come tu stesso sai molto bene.

Paul said, “I am standing in front of Caesar’s court where I should be told I am right or wrong. I have done no wrong to the Jews. You know that.

11 S e ho fatto del male e ho commesso qualche cosa degna di morte, non rifiuto di morire, ma se non c'è nulla di vero nelle cose delle quali costoro mi accusano, nessuno può consegnarmi nelle loro mani. Mi appello a Cesare»

If I have done wrong and should die, I am not trying to keep from dying. But if these things they say against me are not true, no one can give me over to them. I ask to be taken to Caesar.”

12 A llora Festo, dopo aver conferito col consiglio, rispose: «Ti sei appellato a Cesare; a Cesare andrai».

Festus talked to the leaders of the court. Then he said to Paul, “You have asked to be taken to Caesar. You will go to him.” Festus Tells King Agrippa about Paul

13 A lcuni giorni dopo, il re Agrippa e Berenice arrivarono a Cesarea per salutare Festo.

After a few days, King Agrippa and his wife, Bernice, came down to Caesarea. They went to Festus to greet him.

14 E poiché vi si trattennero parecchi giorni, Festo espose al re il caso di Paolo, dicendo: «Felice ha lasciato prigioniero un certo uomo,

They stayed there a few days. Festus told them about Paul. He said, “There is a man here who was left in prison by Felix.

15 c ontro il quale, quando io fui a Gerusalemme, i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani dei Giudei presentarono accuse, chiedendo la sua condanna.

When I was at Jerusalem, the head religious leaders and the leaders of the people told me about him and asked me to say that he is guilty.

16 I o risposi loro che non è abitudine dei Romani di consegnare alcuno per la morte prima che l'accusato sia stato messo a confronto con i suoi accusatori, e gli sia stato dato modo di difendersi dall'accusa.

I told them it was against the Roman law to hand over a man to be put to death before he stood face to face with those who had something against him and could speak for himself.

17 P erciò, quando essi si radunarono qui, senza frapporre indugi, il giorno seguente mi sedetti in tribunale e ordinai di portarmi quest'uomo.

When they came here, I took my seat in the courtroom at once. I had the man brought in.

18 Q uando i suoi accusatori si alzarono, non addussero contro di lui alcuna accusa delle cose che io sospettavo.

When the others spoke, they had nothing against him that I thought they had.

19 M a avevano solamente dei punti di disaccordo sulla loro religione e intorno a un certo Gesú, morto, che Paolo diceva essere vivente.

They did not agree with him about their own religion, and they argued about someone called Jesus. He had died but Paul kept saying He was alive.

20 O ra, essendo io perplesso davanti a una controversia del genere, gli chiesi se voleva andare a Gerusalemme e là essere giudicato intorno a queste cose.

I did not know what to do. Then I asked him if he would go on trial about these things at Jerusalem.

21 M a, essendosi Paolo appellato ad Augusto per rimettersi al suo giudizio, ordinai che fosse custodito finché non potrò mandarlo da Cesare».

But Paul asked to go on trial in front of Caesar. I said that he should be kept in prison until he could be sent to Caesar.”

22 A grippa disse a Festo: «Vorrei ascoltare anch'io quest'uomo». Ed egli rispose: «Domani l'ascolterai».

Agrippa said to Festus, “I would like to hear this man.” Festus said, “Tomorrow you will hear him.” Paul Stands in Front of King Agrippa

23 C osí il giorno seguente Agrippa e Berenice vennero con grande pompa e, entrati nella sala dell'udienza con i tribuni e con i notabili della città, per ordine di Festo Paolo fu condotto lí.

The next day Agrippa and Bernice came into the courtroom. They were dressed to show their greatness as king and queen. Army leaders and leading men of the city came in with them. Festus had Paul brought in.

24 A llora Festo disse: «Re Agrippa, e voi tutti che siete qui presenti con noi voi vedete costui circa il quale tutta la moltitudine dei Giudei si è rivolta a me in Gerusalemme e qui, gridando che non è piú degno di vivere,

Festus said, “King Agrippa and all of you who are here with us, you see this man. All of the Jews both here and at Jerusalem are saying that Paul should be put to death.

25 I o però, avendo riscontrato che non ha fatto alcuna cosa degna di morte ed essendosi egli stesso appellato ad Augusto, ho deliberato di mandarlo.

I have heard nothing against him that would be reason to put him to death. But he asked for a trial in front of Caesar. I have agreed to send Paul to him.

26 E , siccome non ho nulla di certo da scrivere all'imperatore nei suoi confronti, l'ho condotto qui davanti a voi, e principalmente davanti a te, o re Agrippa, affinché dopo questa udienza io possa avere qualcosa da scrivere.

When I write to Caesar, I have nothing to say against him. For this reason, I brought him in front of you all and in front of you, King Agrippa. After we ask him questions, I may have something to write about.

27 M i pare infatti irragionevole mandare un prigioniero senza indicare le accuse fatte contro di lui».

It is foolish for me to send a man up for trial without writing what is against him.”
