1 M a un certo uomo, di nome Anania, con sua moglie Saffira, vendette un podere,

A man by the name of Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, sold some land.

2 e trattenne per sé una parte dell'importo d'accordo con la moglie, e andò a deporre il resto ai piedi degli apostoli.

He kept back part of the money for himself. His wife knew it also. The other part he took to the missionaries.

3 M a Pietro disse: «Anania, perché ha Satana riempito il tuo cuore per farti mentire allo Spirito Santo e trattenere una parte del prezzo del podere?

Peter said to Ananias, “Why did you let Satan fill your heart? He made you lie to the Holy Spirit. You kept back part of the money you got from your land.

4 S e questo restava invenduto, non rimaneva tuo? E il ricavato della vendita non era forse a tua disposizione? Perché ti sei messo in cuore questa cosa? Tu non hai mentito agli uomini, ma a Dio!».

Was not the land yours before you sold it? After it was sold, you could have done what you wanted to do with the money. Why did you allow your heart to do this? You have lied to God, not to men.”

5 A ll'udire queste cose, Anania cadde e spirò. E una grande paura venne su tutti coloro che udirono queste cose.

When Ananias heard these words, he fell down dead. Much fear came on all those who heard what was done.

6 A llora si alzarono alcuni giovani, lo avvolsero, lo portarono fuori e lo seppellirono.

The young men got up and covered his body and carried him out and buried him.

7 O r circa tre ore piú tardi entrò anche sua moglie, ignara dell'accaduto.

About three hours later his wife came in. She did not know what had happened.

8 E Pietro le rivolse la parola, dicendo: «Dimmi avete voi venduto il podere per tanto?». Ed ella rispose: «Sí, per tanto».

Peter said to her, “Tell me, did you sell the land for this amount of money?” She said, “Yes.”

9 A llora Pietro le disse: «Perché vi siete messi d'accordo di tentare lo Spirito del Signore? Ecco, i piedi di coloro che hanno sepolto tuo marito sono all'uscio e porteranno via anche te».

Then Peter said to her, “How could you two have talked together about lying to the Holy Spirit? See! Those who buried your husband are standing at the door and they will carry you out also.”

10 I n quel momento ella cadde ai suoi piedi e spirò. E i giovani, entrati, la trovarono morta, la portarono via e la seppellirono accanto a suo marito.

At once she fell down at his feet and died. When the young men came in, they found that she was dead. They took her out and buried her beside her husband.

11 C osí una grande paura venne su tutta la chiesa e su tutti coloro che udivano queste cose.

Much fear came on all the church and on all who heard it. The First Church Grows

12 O r molti segni e prodigi erano fatti fra il popolo per le mani degli apostoli. Tutti con una sola mente si ritrovavano sotto il portico di Salomone.

The missionaries did many powerful works among the people. They gathered together on Solomon’s Porch.

13 E nessuno degli altri ardiva unirsi a loro; ma il popolo li magnificava.

No one from outside their own group came in with them because they were afraid. But those outside the church had respect for the followers.

14 C osí si aggiungeva al Signore un numero sempre maggiore di credenti, moltitudini di uomini e donne

Many more men and women put their trust in Christ and were added to the group.

15 t anto che portavano i malati nelle piazze, li mettevano su letti e giacigli perché, quando Pietro passava, almeno la sua ombra coprisse qualcuno di loro.

They brought the sick people and laid them on the streets hoping that if Peter walked by, his shadow would fall on some of them.

16 A nche la folla delle città intorno accorreva a Gerusalemme, portando i malati e quelli che erano tormentati da spiriti immondi, e tutti erano guariti.

Many people went into Jerusalem from towns nearby. They took with them their sick people and all who were troubled with demons. All of them were healed. The Missionaries Are Put in Prison

17 A llora si alzarono il sommo sacerdote e tutti coloro che erano con lui, cioè la setta dei sadducei, ripieni di invidia,

The head religious leader heard this. Some of the religious group who believe no one will be raised from the dead also heard of the people being healed. They became very jealous.

18 e misero le mani addosso agli apostoli e li gettarono nella prigione pubblica.

They took hold of the missionaries and put them in prison.

19 M a un angelo del Signore di notte aprí le porte della prigione e, condottili fuori, disse:

An angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison in the night and let them out. The angel said to them,

20 « Andate, presentatevi nel tempio e annunziate al popolo tutte le parole di questa vita».

“Go, stand where you have been standing in the house of God. Keep on telling the people about this new life.”

21 E d essi, udito ciò, entrarono nel tempio sul far del giorno ed insegnavano. Intanto il sommo sacerdote e coloro che erano con lui vennero e convocarono il sinedrio e tutti gli anziani dei figli d'Israele; quindi mandarono le guardie alla prigione per prelevare gli apostoli.

When Peter and John heard this, they went in the house of God early in the morning and began to teach. When the head religious leader and those with him had come, they gathered the men of the court and the leaders of the Jews together. Then they sent to have the missionaries brought to them from the prison.

22 M a le guardie, giunte alla prigione, non li trovarono; e, ritornate, fecero il loro rapporto,

When the soldiers got there, they did not find them in prison. They went back and told the court.

23 d icendo: «Noi abbiamo trovato la prigione ben chiusa con ogni precauzione e le guardie in piedi davanti alle porte; ma, avendole aperte, non vi abbiamo trovato dentro nessuno».

The soldiers said, “We found the door of the prison locked and the soldiers watching the doors. When we opened the door, we found no one inside.”

24 O ra, come il sommo sacerdote, il comandante del tempio e i capi dei sacerdoti udirono queste cose, rimasero perplessi nei loro confronti, non sapendo che cosa significasse tutto questo.

When the religious leaders and the leader of the house of God heard this, they were much troubled as to what might happen.

25 M a sopraggiunse uno che riferí loro dicendo: «Ecco, quegli uomini che metteste in prigione sono nel tempio e stanno ammaestrando il popolo».

Then someone came and told them, “The men you put in prison are now standing in the house of God and teaching the people.”

26 A llora il comandante del tempio andò con le guardie e li ricondusse, senza far loro violenza, per paura di essere lapidati dal popolo.

The leader of the house of God took his men and got them. They did not hurt the missionaries because they were afraid the people would throw stones at them.

27 C osí essi li portarono e li presentarono davanti al sinedrio e il sommo sacerdote li interrogò,

They brought the missionaries in and made them stand in front of the court. The head religious leader said,

28 d icendo: «Non vi abbiamo severamente proibito di insegnare in questo nome? Ed ecco, voi avete riempito Gerusalemme della vostra dottrina e volete far ricadere su di noi il sangue di quest'uomo».

“We told you not to teach about Christ! See! You are spreading this teaching over all Jerusalem. Now you are making it look as if we are guilty of killing this Man.” The Missionaries Speak the Truth

29 M a Pietro e gli altri apostoli, rispondendo, dissero: «Bisogna ubbidire a Dio piuttosto che agli uomini.

Then Peter and the missionaries said, “We must obey God instead of men!

30 I l Dio dei nostri padri ha risuscitato Gesú, che voi uccideste, appendendolo al legno.

The God of our early fathers raised up Jesus, the One you killed and nailed to a cross.

31 D io lo ha esaltato con la sua destra e lo ha fatto principe e salvatore per dare ad Israele ravvedimento e perdono dei peccati.

God raised this Man to His own right side as a leader and as the One Who saves from the punishment of sin. He makes it possible for the Jews to be sorry for their sins. Then they can turn from them and be forgiven.

32 E di queste cose noi gli siamo testimoni, come pure lo Spirito Santo, che Dio ha dato a coloro che gli ubbidiscono».

We have seen these things and are telling about them. The Holy Spirit makes these things known also. God gives His Spirit to those who obey Him.” Gamaliel Speaks in Court

33 A ll'udire queste cose, essi si infuriarono e deliberarono di ucciderli.

The religious leaders became angry when they heard this. They planned to kill the missionaries.

34 M a un certo fariseo, di nome Gamaliele, un dottore della legge onorato da tutto il popolo, si alzò in piedi nel sinedrio e comandò di far uscire un momento gli apostoli.

Gamaliel was a man of the religious leaders’ court. He was a proud religious law-keeper and a teacher of the Law. He was respected by all the people. He stood up and said that the missionaries should be sent outside for a short time.

35 P oi disse a quelli del sinedrio: «Uomini d'Israele, badate bene a ciò che state per fare a questi uomini.

Then Gamaliel said to the court, “Jewish men, be careful what you plan to do with these men.

36 P oiché un po' di tempo fa sorse Teuda, che diceva di essere qualcuno; accanto a lui si raccolsero circa quattrocento uomini; ma egli fu ucciso, e tutti coloro che l'avevano seguito furono dispersi.

Remember that many years ago a man called Theudas made himself out to be someone great. He had about 400 followers. He was killed. His followers were divided and nothing came of his teaching.

37 D opo di lui, al tempo del censimento, sorse Giuda il Galileo che trascinò dietro a sé molta gente; anch'egli perì, e tutti coloro che lo seguirono furono dispersi.

After him, Judas of the country of Galilee gathered many followers. It was the time for every person to have his name written in the books of the nation. This Judas was killed also. All his followers were divided and went away.

38 O ra dunque io vi dico state alla larga da questi uomini e lasciateli stare, perché se questo progetto o quest'opera è dagli uomini sarà distrutta,

I say to you now, stay away from these men and leave them alone. If this teaching and work is from men, it will come to nothing.

39 m a se è da Dio, voi non la potete distruggere, perché vi trovereste a combattere contro Dio stesso!».

If it is from God, you will not be able to stop it. You may even find yourselves fighting against God.”

40 E d essi gli diedero ascolto. E, chiamati gli apostoli, li batterono e comandarono loro di non parlare nel nome di Gesú; poi li lasciarono andare.

The court agreed with Gamaliel. So they called the missionaries in and beat them. They told them they must not speak in the name of Jesus. Then they were sent away.

41 C osí essi si allontanarono dal sinedrio, rallegrandosi di essere stati ritenuti degni di essere vituperati per il nome di Gesú.

So the missionaries went away from the court happy that they could suffer shame because of His Name.

42 E ogni giorno, nel tempio e per le case, non cessavano di insegnare e di annunziare la buona novella: che Gesú è il Cristo.

Every day in the house of God and in the homes, they kept teaching and preaching about Jesus Christ.
