1 ( 08-23) Ma le tenebre non dureranno sempre su colei che ora è nell'angoscia. Come nei tempi passati egli ha coperto di obbrobrio il paese di Zabulon, e il paese di Neftali, cosí in avvenire coprirà di gloria la terra vicina al mare, oltre il Giordano, la Galilea dei gentili.

But there will be no more heavy hearts for those who were suffering. In the past God allowed the lands of Zebulun and Naphtali to be put to shame. In the future He will honor Galilee where those who are not Jews live and where the road to the sea is. It is on the other side of the Jordan.

2 ( 09-1) Il popolo che camminava nelle tenebre ha visto una grande luce; su coloro che abitavano nel paese dell'ombra della morte, si è levata una luce.

The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. The light will shine on those living in the land of dark shadows.

3 ( 09-2) Tu hai accresciuto la nazione, hai aumentato la loro gioia; essi gioiscono davanti a te come si gioisce alla mietitura, e come si giubila quando si divide il bottino.

You will make the nation great. You will give them great joy. They will be glad before You, as with the joy of gathering time, and as men have joy when they divide the riches taken after a battle.

4 ( 09-3) Poiché tu hai spezzato il giogo che gravava su di lui, il bastone sulle sue spalle e la verga di chi l'opprimeva, come nel giorno di Madian.

For You will break the heavy load from their neck and shoulders. You will break the power of those who made it hard for them, as at the battle of Midian.

5 ( 09-4) Poiché ogni calzatura di guerriero nella mischia e ogni mantello rotolato nel sangue, sarà destinato ad essere arso e sarà esca del fuoco.

For every shoe of the soldiers in the battle, and every coat rolled in blood, will be burned in the fire.

6 ( 09-5) Poiché un bambino ci è nato, un figlio ci è stato dato. Sulle sue spalle riposerà l'impero, e sarà chiamato Consigliere ammirabile, Dio potente, Padre eterno. Principe della pace.

For to us a Child will be born. To us a Son will be given. And the rule of the nations will be on His shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Teacher, Powerful God, Father Who Lives Forever, Prince of Peace.

7 ( 09-6) Non ci sarà fine all'incremento del suo impero e pace sul trono di Davide e sul suo regno, per stabilirlo fermamente e rafforzarlo mediante il giudizio e la giustizia, ora e sempre. Questo farà lo zelo dell'Eterno degli eserciti.

There will be no end to His rule and His peace, upon the throne of David and over his nation. He will build it to last and keep it strong with what is right and fair and good from that time and forever. The work of the Lord of All will do this. Punishment against Israel

8 ( 09-7) Il Signore manda una parola contro Giacobbe, ed essa è caduta

The Lord sends word against Jacob, and it falls on Israel.

9 ( 09-8) Tutto il popolo la conoscerà, Efraim e gli abitanti di Samaria, che nel loro orgoglio e arroganza di cuore dicono:

And all the people will know it, that is, Ephraim and the people of Samaria. They say with a proud spirit in their hearts,

10 ( 09-9) «I mattoni sono caduti, ma noi ricostruiremo con pietre squadrate; i sicomori sono stati tagliati, ma noi li sostituiremo con cedri».

“The clay blocks have fallen down, but we will build again with smooth stones. The sycamore trees have been cut down, but we will put cedar trees in their place.”

11 ( 09-10) Per questo l'Eterno susciterà contro di lui gli avversari di Retsin e spronerà i suoi nemici:

So the Lord brings men from Rezin to fight against them. He makes those who hate them move to action.

12 ( 09-11) i Siri dall'oriente, i Filistei dall'occidente, che divoreranno Israele a bocca spalancata. Malgrado tutto ciò la sua ira non si calma e la sua mano rimane distesa.

The Syrians on the east and the Philistines on the west swallow Israel with an open mouth. Even with this, the Lord’s anger does not turn away. His hand is still held out.

13 ( 09-12) Tuttavia il popolo non torna a colui che lo colpisce e non cerca l'Eterno degli eserciti.

Yet the people do not return to Him Who punished them. They do not look to the Lord of All.

14 ( 09-13) Perciò l'Eterno reciderà da Israele capo e coda, ramo di palma e giunco in un solo giorno.

So the Lord will cut off the head and tail from Israel, both palm branch and river-grass in one day.

15 ( 09-14) L'anziano, e il notabile sono il capo, e il profeta che insegna la menzogna è la coda.

The leaders and men of honor are the head, and the tail is the false preachers who teach lies.

16 ( 09-15) Quelli che guidano questo popolo lo fanno sviare, e quelli che sono da loro guidati sono divorati.

For those who lead these people are leading them from the right way, and those who are led by them are going the wrong way.

17 ( 09-16) Perciò l'Eterno non si compiacerà dei suoi giovani, né avrà compassione dei suoi orfani e delle sue vedove, perché tutti sono ipocriti e perversi, e ogni bocca proferisce follia. Malgrado tutto ciò la sua ira non si calma e la sua mano rimane distesa.

So the Lord is not pleased with their young men. He does not have pity on their children who have no parents or on their women whose husbands have died. Every one of them is without God and does sinful things. Every mouth speaks foolish words. Even with all this, His anger does not turn away. His hand is still held out.

18 ( 09-17) Poiché la malvagità arde come un fuoco, che divora rovi e pruni e divampa nel folto della foresta, che salgono quindi in alto come una colonna di fumo.

For sin burns like a fire. It burns thistles and thorns. It sets the woods on fire, and they go up in smoke.

19 ( 09-18) Per l'ira dell'Eterno degli eserciti il paese brucia e il popolo è come esca per il fuoco; nessuno ha pietà del proprio fratello.

The land is burned up by the anger of the Lord, and the people are like wood for the fire. No man shows pity on his brother.

20 ( 09-19) Si strappa via a destra, ma si è ancora affamati; si divora a sinistra, ma non ci si sazia; ognuno divora la carne del proprio braccio:

They take what is on the right hand but still are hungry. They eat what is in the left hand but are not filled. Each of them eats the flesh of his own children.

21 ( 09-20) Manasse, divora Efraim, ed Efraim Manasse; e insieme sono contro Giuda. Malgrado tutto ciò la sua ira non si calma e la sua mano rimane distesa

Manasseh goes against Ephraim, and Ephraim goes against Manasseh. And together they are against Judah. Even with all this, the Lord’s anger does not turn away. His hand is still held out.
