1 D esiderate l'amore e cercate ardentemente i doni spirituali, ma soprattutto che possiate profetizzare,

You should want to have this love. You should want the gifts of the Holy Spirit and most of all to be able to speak God’s Word.

2 p erché chi parla in altra lingua non parla agli uomini, ma a Dio; poiché nessuno lo comprende, ma egli in spirito proferisce misteri.

The man who speaks in special sounds speaks to God. He is not speaking to men. No one understands. He is speaking secret things through the power of the Holy Spirit.

3 C hi profetizza, invece, parla agli uomini per edificazione, esortazione e consolazione.

The man who speaks God’s Word speaks to men. It helps them to learn and understand. It gives them comfort.

4 C hi parla in altra lingua edifica se stesso, ma chi profetizza edifica la chiesa.

The man who speaks in special sounds receives strength. The man who speaks God’s Word gives strength to the church.

5 I o vorrei che tutti parlaste in lingue, ma molto piú che profetizzaste, perché chi profetizza è superiore a chi parla in lingue a meno che egli interpreti, affinché la chiesa ne riceva edificazione.

I wish all of you spoke in special sounds. But more than that, I wish all of you spoke God’s Word. The one who speaks God’s Word has a more important gift than the one who speaks in special sounds. But if he can tell what he is speaking, the church will be helped.

6 M a ora, fratelli, se venissi a voi parlando in lingue, che vi gioverei se non vi parlassi per mezzo di rivelazione, o di conoscenza, o di profezia, o di insegnamento?

Christian brothers, if I come to you speaking in special sounds, what good is it to you? But if I tell you something God has shown me or something I have learned or what God’s Word says will happen in the future or teach you God’s Word, it will be for your good.

7 L e cose inanimate stesse che emettono un suono, come il flauto e la cetra, se non danno suoni distinti, come si riconoscerà ciò che si suona con il flauto o con la cetra?

There are things on which people play music. If strange sounds are made on these, how will others know which one is played?

8 S e infatti la tromba dà un suono sconosciuto, chi si preparerà alla battaglia?

If a horn does not make a good sound, how will men know they are to get ready to fight?

9 C osí anche voi, se con la lingua non proferite un parlare intelligibile, come si comprenderà ciò che è detto? Sarebbe infatti come se voi parlaste all'aria.

It is the same if you speak to a person in special sounds. How will he know what you say? Your sounds will be lost in the air.

10 V i sono, ad esempio, tante varietà di suoni di lingua nel mondo, e nessuno di essi è senza significato.

There are many languages in the world. All of them have meaning to the people who understand them.

11 S e dunque io non comprendo il significato del suono, sarò come uno straniero per chi parla, e chi parla sarà uno straniero per me.

But if I do not understand the language someone uses to speak to me, the man who speaks is a stranger to me. I am a stranger to him.

12 C osí anche voi, poiché siete desiderosi di avere doni spirituali, cercate di abbondarne per l'edificazione della chiesa.

Since you want gifts from the Holy Spirit, ask for those that will build up the whole church.

13 P erciò chi parla in altra lingua preghi di poter interpretare,

So the man who speaks in special sounds should pray for the gift to be able to tell what they mean.

14 p erché, se io prego in altra lingua, il mio spirito ben prega, ma la mia mente rimane infruttuosa.

If I pray in special sounds, my spirit is doing the praying. My mind does not understand.

15 C he si deve dunque fare? Pregherò con lo spirito, ma lo farò anche con la mente; canterò con lo spirito, ma canterò anche con la mente.

What should I do? I will pray with my spirit and I will pray with my mind also. I will sing with my spirit and I will sing with my mind also.

16 T uttavia, se tu lodi Dio con lo spirito, colui che occupa il posto del profano, come dirà amen, al tuo ringraziamento, poiché egli non comprende ciò che tu dici?

If you honor and give thanks to God with your spirit in sounds nobody understands, how can others honor and give thanks also if they do not know what you are saying?

17 I nfatti tu puoi anche rendere un bel ringraziamento, ma l'altro non è edificato.

You are honoring and giving thanks to God, but it is not helping other people.

18 I o ringrazio il mio Dio, perché parlo in lingue piú di voi tutti.

I thank God that I speak in special sounds more than all of you.

19 M a nell'assemblea preferisco dire cinque parole con la mia intelligenza per istruire anche gli altri, piuttosto che diecimila parole in altra lingua.

But in a meeting of the church, it is better if I say five words that others can understand and be helped by than 10, 000 words in special sounds.

20 F ratelli, non siate bambini di senno, ma siate bambini in malizia e uomini compiuti in senno.

Christian brothers, do not be like children in your thinking. Be full-grown, but be like children in not knowing how to sin.

21 S ta scritto nella legge: «Io parlerò a questo popolo in lingue straniere e con labbra straniere, ma neppure cosí mi ascolteranno», dice il Signore.

God says in the Holy Writings, “I will speak to My people. I will speak through men from other lands in other languages. Even then My people will not listen to Me.”

22 P ertanto le lingue sono un segno non per i credenti, ma per i non credenti mentre la profezia non è per i non credenti, ma per i credenti.

So then speaking in special sounds is for those who do not believe. It is not for those who believe. But speaking God’s Word is for those who believe. It is not for those who do not believe. Church Meetings

23 S e dunque, quando tutta la chiesa è riunita insieme, tutti parlano in lingue ed entrano dei profani o dei non credenti, non diranno che voi siete fuori di senno?

If some people who are not Christians come to your church meeting while all the people are speaking in special sounds, they will think you are crazy.

24 M a se tutti profetizzano ed entra un non credente, egli è convinto da tutti, è giudicato da tutti.

But if a man who is not a Christian comes to your church meeting while you are all speaking God’s Word, he will understand that he is a sinner by what he hears. He will know he is guilty.

25 I n questo modo i segreti del suo cuore vengono palesati e cosí, gettandosi con la faccia a terra, adorerà Dio, dichiarando che Dio è veramente fra voi.

The secrets of his heart will be brought into the open. He will get on his knees and worship God. He will say, “For sure, God is here with you!”

26 C he conviene dunque fare, fratelli? Quando vi riunite, avendo ciascuno di voi, chi un salmo, chi un insegnamento, chi parole in altra lingua, chi una rivelazione, chi un'interpretazione, si faccia ogni cosa per l'edificazione.

What am I saying, Christian brothers? When you meet together for worship, some of you have a song to sing. Some of you want to teach and some have special words from God. Some of you speak in special sounds and some of you tell what they mean. Everything should be done to help those who are meeting together to grow strong as Christians.

27 S e uno parla in altra lingua, si faccia questo da due o tre al piú, e l'un dopo l'altro, e uno interpreti.

No more than two or three people should speak in special sounds. Only one should speak at a time. Someone must tell the meaning of the special sounds.

28 M a se non vi è chi interpreti, si taccia nella chiesa chi parla in altra lingua, ma parli a se stesso e a Dio.

If no one is there who can tell the meaning of the special sounds, he should not speak in the church. He should speak only to himself and to God.

29 P arlino due o tre profeti, e gli altri giudichino.

Two or three should speak God’s Word. The other people should listen and decide if they are speaking right.

30 M a se è rivelata qualcosa ad uno che è seduto, si taccia il precedente.

If someone sitting in the meeting gets some special word from God, the one who is speaking should stop.

31 T utti infatti, ad uno ad uno, potete profetizzare affinché tutti imparino e tutti siano incoraggiati.

All of you can speak God’s Word, but only one person at a time. In that way, all of you can learn and be helped.

32 G li spiriti dei profeti sono sottoposti ai profeti

Men who speak God’s Word are able to stop when they should.

33 p erché Dio non è un Dio di confusione, ma di pace; e cosí si fà in tutte le chiese dei santi.

God does not want everyone speaking at the same time in church meetings. He wants peace. All the churches of God’s people worship this way.

34 T acciano le vostre donne nelle chiese, perché non è loro permesso di parlare, ma devono essere sottomesse, come dice anche la legge.

Women should not be allowed to speak in church meetings. They are to obey this teaching. The Law says this also.

35 E se vogliono imparare qualche cosa interroghino i propri mariti a casa, perché è vergognoso per le donne parlare in chiesa.

If they want to find out about something, they should ask their husbands at home. It is a shame for a woman to speak in a church meeting.

36 E la parola di Dio proceduta da voi o è essa pervenuta a voi soli?

Did the Word of God come from you Christians in the city of Corinth? Or are you the only people who received it?

37 S e uno si stima essere profeta o spirituale, riconosca che le cose che vi scrivo sono comandamenti del Signore.

Some of you may think you have the gift of speaking God’s Word or some other gift from the Holy Spirit. If you do, you should know that what I am writing to you is what God has told us we must obey.

38 E se uno lo vuole ignorare, lo ignori.

If any man does not listen to this, have nothing to do with him.

39 P erciò, fratelli miei cercate ardentemente il profetizzare e non impedite di parlare in lingue.

So then, my Christian brothers, you should want to speak God’s Word. Do not stop anyone from speaking in special sounds.

40 M a ogni cosa sia fatta con decoro e con ordine.

All things should be done in the right way, one after the other.
