1 O ra, mentre Apollo era a Corinto, Paolo, attraversate le località piú alte del paese, giunse ad Efeso e, trovati là alcuni discepoli, disse loro:

While Apollos was in the city of Corinth, Paul went through the hill country to get to the city of Ephesus. He found a few followers there.

2 « Avete ricevuto lo Spirito Santo, quando avete creduto?». Quelli gli risposero: «Non abbiamo neppure udito che vi sia uno Spirito Santo».

He asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you put your trust in Christ?” They said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3 E disse loro: «Con quale battesimo dunque siete stati battezzati?». Essi risposero: «Col battesimo di Giovanni».

He asked them, “How were you baptized?” They answered, “The way John baptized.”

4 A llora Paolo disse: «Giovanni battezzò con il battesimo di ravvedimento dicendo al popolo che dovevano credere in colui che veniva dopo di lui, cioè in Cristo Gesú».

Paul said, “John baptized those who were sorry for their sins and turned from them. He told the people to put their trust in Jesus Who was coming later.”

5 U dito questo, furono battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesú.

The people there were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus when they heard this.

6 E , quando Paolo impose loro le mani, lo Spirito Santo scese su di loro e parlavano in altre lingue e profetizzavano.

When Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them. They started to talk in special sounds and to speak God’s Word.

7 O r erano in tutto circa dodici uomini.

There were about twelve men. Paul Preaches in a Place of Worship and in a School in Ephesus

8 P oi egli entrò nella sinagoga e parlò con franchezza per tre mesi, discutendo e persuadendo sulle cose appartenenti al regno di Dio.

For three months Paul went into the Jewish place of worship and spoke without fear. He taught them things about the holy nation of God.

9 M a poiché alcuni si indurivano e persistevano nell'incredulità, parlando male della via in presenza della folla, egli, ritiratosi da loro, separò i discepoli e continuò a discutere ogni giorno nella scuola di un certo Tiranno.

Some let their hearts grow hard. They would not put their trust in Christ. These spoke against the Christian religion in front of other people. Then Paul took the followers away from the others. He taught them each day in the school of Tyrannus.

10 E questo durò per due anni di modo che tutti gli abitanti dell'Asia, Giudei e Greci, udirono la parola del Signore Gesú.

He did this for two years. All the Jews and the Greeks in the countries of Asia heard the Word of the Lord. Paul Does Powerful Works

11 E Dio faceva prodigi straordinari per le mani di Paolo,

God used Paul to do powerful special works.

12 a l punto che si portavano sui malati degli asciugatoi e dei grembiuli che erano stati sul suo corpo, e le malattie si allontanavano da loro e gli spiriti maligni uscivano da loro.

Pieces of cloth and parts of his clothes that had been next to his body were put on sick people. Then they were healed of their diseases and demons came out of them.

13 O r alcuni itineranti esorcisti Giudei tentarono di invocare il nome del Signore Gesú su coloro che avevano gli spiriti maligni, dicendo: «Vi scongiuriamo per Gesú, che Paolo predica!».

There were Jews who went from city to city trying to put demons out of people. Some of these tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus on those who had demons. They said, “I speak to you in the name of Jesus, the One Paul preaches about.”

14 E quelli che facevano questo erano sette figli di un certo Sceva, un capo sacerdote giudeo.

A Jewish leader of the people by the name of Sceva had seven sons. These sons were trying to do this.

15 M a lo spirito maligno rispose e disse: «Io conosco Gesú e so chi è Paolo, ma voi chi siete?».

The demon said, “I know Jesus. I know about Paul. But who are you?”

16 Q uindi l'uomo che aveva lo spirito maligno si avventò su di loro e, sopraffattili, fece loro tal violenza che fuggirono da quella casa, nudi e feriti.

Then the man with the demon jumped on the sons. He had power over them and beat them. They ran out of the house with no clothes on and they were hurt.

17 O r questo fu risaputo da tutti i Giudei e Greci che abitavano ad Efeso, e furono tutti presi da paura, e il nome del Signore Gesú era magnificato.

All the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus heard about it. Because of this all the people became afraid. And the name of the Lord Jesus was held in great honor.

18 E molti di coloro che avevano creduto venivano a confessare, e a dichiarare le cose che avevano fatto.

Many Christians came and told of the wrong things they were doing.

19 M olti di coloro che avevano esercitato le arti occulte radunarono assieme i libri e li arsero in presenza di tutti, e, calcolatone il prezzo, si trovò che ammontava a cinquantamila pezzi d'argento.

Many of those who did witchcraft gathered their books together and burned them in front of everyone. These books were worth 50, 000 pieces of silver money.

20 C osí la parola di Dio cresceva potentemente e si affermava.

The Word of the Lord became well-known.

21 D opo questi avvenimenti. Paolo si mise nell'animo di andare a Gerusalemme passando per la Macedonia e per l'Acaia, e diceva: «Dopo essere stato lí, bisogna che io veda anche Roma».

After this, Paul thought he would go through the countries of Macedonia and Greece. Then he would go to Jerusalem. He said, “After I have been there, I must go to the city of Rome also.”

22 M andati allora in Macedonia due dei suoi collaboratori, cioè Timoteo ed Erasto, egli si trattenne ancora qualche tempo in Asia.

He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia. Paul stayed in the countries of Asia awhile longer. The Meeting of the Silver Workmen in Ephesus

23 O r in quel tempo nacque un grande tumulto in merito alla Via,

During that time there was much trouble about the Christians.

24 p erché un tale di nome Demetrio, orafo, che faceva dei templi di Diana in argento, procurava non poco guadagno agli artigiani.

A man named Demetrius made small silver buildings for the worship of Diana. His workmen received much money for their work.

25 C ostui li radunò insieme ai lavoratori che avevano un'attività affine, e disse: «Uomini, voi sapete che il nostro guadagno proviene da questa attività.

He called his workmen together and other men who made these small silver buildings. He said to them, “Men, you know we make much money from this work.

26 O r voi vedete e udite che questo Paolo ha persuaso e sviato un gran numero di gente non solo in Efeso, ma in quasi tutta l'Asia, dicendo che non sono dèi quelli costruiti da mano d'uomo.

Now you hear that Paul has turned away many people in Ephesus as well as in Asia. He tells them that gods made with hands are not gods.

27 N on solo c'è pericolo per noi che quest'arte particolare venga discreditata, ma che anche il tempio della grande dea Diana non conti piú nulla, e che venga spogliata della sua grandezza colei che tutta l'Asia, anzi tutto il mondo, adora».

It could be that our work will not be respected. Not only that, the house of worship for the god of Diana will be worth nothing and her greatness will be destroyed. All the countries of Asia and the world worship her.”

28 A ll'udire queste cose, essi si accesero di sdegno e gridarono, dicendo: «Grande è la Diana degli Efesini».

They became angry when they heard this and cried out, “Great is Diana of Ephesus.”

29 E tutta la città fu ripiena di confusione; e, trascinando con forza Gaio e Aristarco, Macedoni, compagni di viaggio di Paolo, corsero tutti d'accordo al teatro.

The whole city was filled with loud cries. They caught Gaius and Aristarchus. These two men from Macedonia were with Paul. They gathered around them at the meeting place in the city.

30 O r Paolo voleva presentarsi al popolo, ma i discepoli non glielo permisero.

Paul wanted to stand in front of all the people but his followers would not let him.

31 A nche alcuni Asiarchi, che gli erano amici, mandarono a pregarlo di non presentarsi al teatro.

Some of the city leaders who were his friends told him not to go to the meeting.

32 I ntanto gli uni gridavano una cosa, gli altri un'altra, tanto che l'adunanza era confusa e i piú non sapevano per quale ragione si fossero radunati.

All this time some were crying out one thing and some another. The meeting was all noise. Most of the people did not know why they had come together.

33 A llora fu fatto uscire dalla folla Alessandro, spinto avanti dai Giudei. E Alessandro, fatto cenno con la mano, voleva parlare in sua difesa al popolo.

Then the Jews pushed Alexander to the front. Alexander held his hand up and was going to speak.

34 M a, quando si resero conto che egli era Giudeo, si misero tutti a gridare a una sola voce per quasi due ore: «Grande è la Diana degli Efesini».

As soon as they saw he was a Jew, they cried out with a loud voice for two hours, “Great is Diana of Ephesus!”

35 D opo aver calmato la folla, il cancelliere disse: «Efesini, chi è mai quell'uomo che non sappia che la città degli Efesini è la custode del tempio della grande dea Diana e della sua immagine caduta da Giove?

One of the city leaders stopped the noise. He spoke, “Men of Ephesus, everyone knows our city is where the god of Diana is kept. That is the stone god that fell from the sky.

36 P oiché dunque queste cose sono incontestabili, voi dovete restare calmi e non fare nulla di sconsiderato.

Everyone knows this is true, so you must not cry out or do anything foolish.

37 I nfatti avete condotto qui questi uomini, che non sono né sacrileghi né bestemmiatori della vostra dea.

The men you brought here do not rob houses of worship or talk against our god.

38 S e dunque Demetrio e gli artigiani che sono con lui hanno qualcosa contro qualcuno, i tribunali sono aperti e vi sono i proconsoli; presenti ognuno le sue accuse.

If Demetrius and his workmen have something against anyone, we have special days for courts. Let them go to court.

39 S e poi avete qualche altra richiesta da fare, ciò si risolverà nell'ordinaria assemblea.

If you want anything else, it should be done in another meeting.

40 N oi infatti corriamo il rischio di essere accusati di sedizione per l'accaduto di oggi, non essendovi ragione alcuna con cui giustificare questo assembramento».

We are in danger of being asked about this trouble today. There is no good reason we can give for this meeting.”

41 E , dette queste cose, sciolse l'adunanza.

When he had said this, he told them to leave.
