1 I o sono l'uomo che ha visto l'afflizione sotto la verga del suo furore.

I am the man that has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

2 E gli mi ha guidato e mi ha fatto camminare nelle tenebre e non nella luce.

He has led me and caused me to walk in darkness, and not in light.

3 S í, contro di me egli ha volto ripetutamente la sua mano tutto il giorno.

Surely against me he turns his hand again and again all the day.

4 E gli ha consumato la mia carne e la mia pelle, ha frantumato le mie ossa

My flesh and my skin has he made old; he has broken my bones.

5 H a costruito bastioni contro di me, mi ha circondato di amarezza e di affanno.

He has built against me, and surrounded me with gall and travail.

6 M i ha fatto abitare in luoghi tenebrosi, come i morti da lungo tempo.

He has made me to dwell in dark places, as those that have been long dead.

7 M i ha costruito attorno un muro, perché non esca; ha reso pesante la mia catena.

He has walled me about, that I can’t go out; he has made my chain heavy.

8 A nche quando grido e chiedo aiuto a gran voce, egli rifiuta di ascoltare la mia preghiera.

Yes, when I cry, and call for help, he shuts out my prayer.

9 E gli ha sbarrato le mie vie con pietre tagliate, ha reso i miei sentieri tortuosi.

He has walled up my ways with cut stone; he has made my paths crooked.

10 E gli è stato per me come un orso in agguato, come un leone in luoghi nascosti.

He is to me as a bear lying in wait, as a lion in secret places.

11 H a deviato le mie vie, mi ha dilaniato e mi ha reso desolato.

He has turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces; he has made me desolate.

12 H a teso il suo arco e mi ha fatto il bersaglio delle sue frecce.

He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

13 H a fatto penetrare nel mio cuore le frecce della sua faretra.

He has caused the shafts of his quiver to enter into my kidneys.

14 S ono diventato lo scherno di tutto il mio popolo, la sua canzone di tutto il giorno.

I am become a derision to all my people, and their song all the day.

15 M i ha saziato di amarezza, mi ha fatto bere assenzio,

He has filled me with bitterness, he has sated me with wormwood.

16 M i ha spezzato i denti con la ghiaia, mi ha coperto di cenere.

He has also broken my teeth with gravel stones; he has covered me with ashes.

17 H ai allontanato la mia anima dalla pace, ho dimenticato il benessere.

You have removed my soul far off from peace; I forgot prosperity.

18 H o detto: «E' scomparsa la mia fiducia e la mia speranza nell'Eterno».

I said, My strength is perished, and my expectation from Yahweh.

19 R icordati della mia afflizione e del mio vagare, dell'assenzio e dell'amarezza.

Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

20 L 'anima mia se ne ricorda del continuo ed è abbattuta dentro di me.

My soul still remembers them, and is bowed down within me.

21 Q uesto voglio richiamare alla mente e perciò voglio sperare.

This I recall to my mind; therefore have I hope.

22 E ' una grazia dell'Eterno che non siamo stati interamente distrutti, perché le sue compassioni non sono esaurite.

It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail.

23 S i rinnovano ogni mattina; grande è la tua fedeltà.

They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

24 « L'Eterno è la mia parte», dice l'anima mia, «perciò spererò in lui».

Yahweh is my portion, says my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

25 L 'Eterno è buono con quelli che sperano in lui, con l'anima che lo cerca.

Yahweh is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.

26 B uona cosa è aspettare in silenzio la salvezza dell'Eterno.

It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of Yahweh.

27 B uona cosa è per l'uomo portare il giogo nella sua giovinezza.

It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

28 S ieda solitario e stia in silenzio quando Dio glielo impone.

Let him sit alone and keep silence, because he has laid it on him.

29 M etta la sua bocca nella polvere, forse c'è ancora speranza.

Let him put his mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope.

30 P orga la guancia a chi lo percuote, si sazi di vituperio.

Let him give his cheek to him who strikes him; let him be filled full with reproach.

31 P oiché il Signore non rigetta per sempre;

For the Lord will not cast off forever.

32 m a, se affligge, avrà compassione, secondo la moltitudine delle sue misericordie,

For though he cause grief, yet he will have compassion according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.

33 p oiché non è volentieri che umilia ed affligge i figli degli uomini.

For he does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.

34 Q uando uno schiaccia sotto i suoi piedi tutti i prigionieri della terra,

To crush under foot all the prisoners of the earth,

35 q uando uno perverte il diritto di un uomo alla presenza dell'Altissimo.

To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the Most High,

36 q uando si fa torto ad un uomo nella sua causa, il Signore non lo vede?

To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord doesn’t approve.

37 C hi mai dice qualcosa che poi si avvera, se il Signore non la comandato?

Who is he who says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord doesn’t command it?

38 I l male e il bene non procedono forse dalla bocca dell'Altissimo?

Doesn’t evil and good come out of the mouth of the Most High?

39 P erché mai si lamenta un uomo vivente, un uomo per la punizione dei suoi peccati?

Why does a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

40 E saminiamo le nostre vie, scrutiamole e ritorniamo all'Eterno.

Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to Yahweh.

41 E leviamo i nostri cuori e le nostre mani a Dio nei cieli.

Let us lift up our heart with our hands to God in the heavens.

42 N oi abbiamo peccato, siamo stati ribelli e tu non hai perdonato.

We have transgressed and have rebelled; you have not pardoned.

43 T i sei avvolto nell'ira e ci hai inseguito, hai ucciso senza pietà.

You have covered with anger and pursued us; you have killed, you have not pitied.

44 T i sei avvolto in una nuvola, perché nessuna preghiera potesse passare.

You have covered yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.

45 C i hai reso spazzatura e rifiuto in mezzo al popoli.

You have made us an off-scouring and refuse in the middle of the peoples.

46 T utti i nostri nemici hanno spalancato la bocca contro di noi.

All our enemies have opened their mouth wide against us.

47 C i sono venuti addosso terrore, laccio, desolazione e rovina.

Fear and the pit have come on us, devastation and destruction.

48 R ivi d'acqua scorrono dai miei occhi per la rovina della figlia del mio popolo.

My eye runs down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

49 I l mio occhio versa lacrime senza smettere, senza interruzione,

My eye pours down, and doesn’t cease, without any intermission,

50 f ino a quando l'Eterno non guardi dal cielo e non veda.

Until Yahweh look down, and see from heaven.

51 I l mio occhio procura dolore alla mia anima per tutte le figlie della mia città.

My eye affects my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.

52 Q uelli che mi odiano senza ragione mi hanno dato la caccia come a un uccello.

They have chased me relentlessly like a bird, those who are my enemies without cause.

53 H anno distrutto la mia vita nella fossa, mi hanno tirato pietre.

They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and have cast a stone on me.

54 L e acque scorrevano sopra il mio capo, io dicevo: «E' finita per me».

Waters flowed over my head; I said, I am cut off.

55 H o invocato il tuo nome, o Eterno, dal fondo della fossa.

I called on your name, Yahweh, out of the lowest dungeon.

56 T u hai udito la mia voce; non nascondere il tuo orecchio al mio sospiro, al mio grido di aiuto.

You heard my voice; don’t hide your ear at my breathing, at my cry.

57 Q uando ti ho invocato ti sei avvicinato; hai detto: «Non temere!».

You came near in the day that I called on you; you said, Don’t be afraid.

58 O Signore, tu hai difeso la causa a dell'anima mia, tu hai redento la mia vita.

Lord, you have pleaded the causes of my soul; you have redeemed my life.

59 O Eterno, tu hai visto il torto da me subito, difendi la mia causa!

Yahweh, you have seen my wrong. Judge my cause.

60 H ai visto tutto il loro spirito di vendetta, tutte le loro macchinazioni contro di me.

You have seen all their vengeance and all their devices against me.

61 H ai udito i loro insulti, o Eterno, tutte le loro macchinazioni contro di me.

You have heard their reproach, Yahweh, and all their devices against me,

62 i discorsi di quelli che si levano contro di me, ciò che meditano contro di me tutto il giorno.

The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.

63 O sserva quando si siedono e quando si alzano, io sono la loro canzone.

You see their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their song.

64 R ipagali, o Eterno, secondo l'opera delle loro mani.

You will render to them a recompense, Yahweh, according to the work of their hands.

65 R endili duri di cuore, la tua maledizione sia su di loro.

You will give them hardness of heart, your curse to them.

66 I nseguili nella tua ira e distruggili da sotto i cieli dell'Eterno.

You will pursue them in anger, and destroy them from under the heavens of Yahweh.
