1 P oi Giosuè chiamò i Rubeniti, i Gadti e la mezza tribú di Manasse e disse loro:

Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,

2 « Voi avete osservato tutto ciò che Mosè, servo dell'Eterno, vi aveva comandato e avete ubbidito alla mia voce in tutto ciò che io vi ho comandato.

and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, and have listened to my voice in all that I commanded you.

3 V oi non avete abbandonato i vostri fratelli durante questo lungo tempo fino ad oggi, e avete osservato le ingiunzioni che l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, vi ha comandato.

You have not left your brothers these many days to this day, but have performed the duty of the commandment of Yahweh your God.

4 E ora che l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, ha dato riposo ai vostri fratelli, come aveva loro promesso, ritornate e andate alle vostre tende nel paese che vi appartiene, e che Mosè, servo dell'Eterno, vi ha assegnato al di là del Giordano.

Now Yahweh your God has given rest to your brothers, as he spoke to them. Therefore now return and go to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan.

5 S oltanto abbiate cura di mettere in pratica i comandamenti e la legge che Mosè, servo dell'Eterno, vi ha prescritto, amando l'Eterno il vostro DIO, camminando in tutte le sue vie, osservando i suoi comandamenti, tenendovi stretti a lui e servendolo con tutto il vostro cuore e con tutta la vostra anima».

Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

6 P oi Giosuè li benedisse e li congedò, ed essi tornarono alle loro tende.

So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went to their tents.

7 O r Mosè aveva dato a metà della tribú di Manasse una eredità in Bashan, Giosuè invece diede all'altra metà una eredità tra i loro fratelli, di qua dal Giordano, a ovest. Così, quando Giosuè li rimandò alle loro tende, li benedisse,

Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given inheritance in Bashan; but to the other half gave Joshua among their brothers beyond the Jordan westward. Moreover when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them,

8 e parlò loro, dicendo: «Voi fate ritorno alle vostre tende con grandi ricchezze, con gran numero di bestiame, con argento, oro, bronzo, ferro e con moltissime vesti; dividete con i vostri fratelli il bottino dei vostri nemici».

and spoke to them, saying, “Return with much wealth to your tents, with very much livestock, with silver, with gold, with brass, with iron, and with very much clothing. Divide the plunder of your enemies with your brothers.”

9 C osì i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribú di Manasse tornarono, lasciando i figli d'Israele a Sciloh, nel paese di Canaan, per andare nel paese di Galaad, il paese di loro proprietà, che avevano ricevuto in possesso, secondo il comando dato dall'Eterno per mezzo di Mosè.

The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, which they owned, according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.

10 C ome giunsero ai bordi del Giordano che si trova nel paese di Canaan, i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribú di Manasse vi costruirono un altare, presso il Giordano, un altare imponente a vedersi.

When they came to the region about the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, a great altar to look at.

11 I figli d'Israele udirono che si diceva: «ecco, i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribú di Manasse hanno costruito un altare ai margini del paese di Canaan, ai bordi del Giordano, dal lato occupato dai figli d'Israele».

The children of Israel heard this, “Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the border of the land of Canaan, in the region around the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the children of Israel.”

12 Q uando i figli d'Israele vennero a sapere questo, tutta l'assemblea dei figli d'Israele si riunì a Sciloh per salire a far guerra contro di loro.

When the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.

13 A llora i figli d'Israele mandarono ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e alla mezza tribú di Manasse, nel paese di Galaad, Finehas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazar,

The children of Israel sent to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest.

14 e con lui dieci principi, un principe per ogni casa paterna delle varie tribú d'Israele: ciascuno di loro era capo di una casa paterna fra le divisioni d'Israele.

With him were ten princes, one prince of a fathers’ house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were each head of their fathers’ houses among the thousands of Israel.

15 E ssi andarono dai figli di Ruben, dai figli di Gad e dalla mezza tribú di Manasse nel paese di Galaad e parlarono con loro, dicendo:

They came to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying,

16 « Così dice tutta l'assemblea dell'Eterno: "Che cos'è questa trasgressione che avete commesso contro il DIO d'Israele, ritraendovi oggi da seguire l'Eterno costruendovi un altare per ribellarvi oggi all'Eterno?

“Thus says the whole congregation of Yahweh, ‘What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away today from following Yahweh, in that you have built yourselves an altar, to rebel today against Yahweh?

17 F u forse piccola cosa per noi l'iniquità di Peor, di cui a tutt'oggi non ci siamo ancora purificati e che attirò una calamità sull'assemblea dell'Eterno,

Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there came a plague on the congregation of Yahweh,

18 c he voi oggi vi ritraete dal seguire l'Eterno? Poiché, se oggi vi ribellate all'Eterno, domani egli si adirerà contro tutta l'assemblea d'Israele.

that you must turn away today from following Yahweh? It will be, since you rebel today against Yahweh, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.

19 S e ritenete impuro il paese che possedete, potete passare nel paese di proprietà dell'Eterno, dov'è stabilito il tabernacolo dell'Eterno, e stabilirvi in mezzo a noi; ma non vi ribellate all'Eterno e non ribellatevi contro di noi costruendovi un altare oltre l'altare dell'Eterno, il nostro DIO.

However, if the land of your possession is unclean, then pass over to the land of the possession of Yahweh, in which Yahweh’s tabernacle dwells, and take possession among us; but don’t rebel against Yahweh, nor rebel against us, in building an altar other than the altar of Yahweh our God.

20 Q uando Akan, figlio di Zerah, commise una trasgressione in cose votate allo sterminio, non attirò forse l'ira dell'Eterno su tutta l'assemblea d'Israele? E quell'uomo non fu solo a perire nella Sua iniquità"».

Didn’t Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? That man didn’t perish alone in his iniquity.’”

21 A llora i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e la mezza tribú di Manasse risposero e dissero ai capi delle divisioni d'Israele:

Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel,

22 « L'Eterno Dio degli dèi, l'Eterno Dio degli dèi! Egli lo sa, e anche Israele lo saprà. Se è stato per ribellione o per infedeltà verso l'Eterno, non risparmiateci in questo giorno.

“The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, the Mighty One, God, Yahweh, he knows; and Israel shall know: if it was in rebellion, or if in trespass against Yahweh (don’t save us today),

23 S e abbiamo costruito un altare per ritrarci dal seguire l'Eterno, o per offrire su di esso olocausti o oblazioni di cibo, o per fare su di esso sacrifici di ringraziamento, l'Eterno stesso ce ne chieda conto!

that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Yahweh; or if to offer burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings, let Yahweh himself require it.

24 M a in verità noi abbiamo fatto questo con timore, per una ragione pensando che in avvenire i vostri discendenti potessero dire ai nostri discendenti: "Cosa avete a che fare con l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele?

“If we have not out of concern done this, and for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your children might speak to our children, saying, “What have you to do with Yahweh, the God of Israel?

25 L 'Eterno ha posto il Giordano come confine tra noi e voi, o Figli di Ruben, o figli di Gad; voi non avete alcuna parte nell'Eterno". Così i vostri discendenti potrebbero distogliere i nostri discendenti dal temere l'Eterno.

For Yahweh has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you children of Reuben and children of Gad. You have no portion in Yahweh.”’ So your children might make our children cease from fearing Yahweh.

26 P erciò abbiamo detto: "Mettiamoci a costruire un altare, non per olocausti né per sacrifici,

“Therefore we said, ‘Let’s now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice;

27 m a perché serva come testimone fra noi e voi e fra i nostri discendenti dopo di noi. affinché possiamo compiere il servizio dell'Eterno davanti a lui. con i nostri olocausti, con i nostri sacrifici e con le nostre offerte di ringraziamento affinché i vostri discendenti non abbiano un giorno a dire ai nostri discendenti: Voi non avete parte alcuna nell'Eterno".

but it will be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may perform the service of Yahweh before him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings;’ that your children may not tell our children in time to come, ‘You have no portion in Yahweh.’

28 P erciò abbiamo detto: Se un giorno avverrà che dicano questo a noi o ai nostri discendenti, allora risponderemo: Guardate la forma dell'altare dell'Eterno che i nostri padri fecero, non per olocausti né per sacrifici, ma perché servisse come testimone fra noi e voi.

“Therefore we said, ‘It shall be, when they tell us or our generations this in time to come, that we shall say, “Behold the pattern of the altar of Yahweh, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.”’

29 L ungi da noi l'idea di ribellarci all'Eterno e di ritrarci oggi dal seguire l'Eterno, costruendo un altare per olocausti, per oblazioni di cibo o per sacrifici, oltre l'altare dell'Eterno, il nostro DIO, che è davanti al suo tabernacolo!».

“Far be it from us that we should rebel against Yahweh, and turn away today from following Yahweh, to build an altar for burnt offering, for meal offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of Yahweh our God that is before his tabernacle!”

30 Q uando il sacerdote Finehas e i principi dell'assemblea, i capi delle divisioni d'Israele che erano con lui udirono le parole dette dai figli di Ruben, dai figli di Gad e dai figli di Manasse, ne rimasero soddisfatti.

When Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them well.

31 A llora Finehas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazar, disse ai figli di Ruben, ai figli di Gad e ai figli di Manasse: «Oggi riconosciamo che l'Eterno è in mezzo a noi, perché voi non avete commesso questa trasgressione verso l'Eterno; così avete scampato i figli d'Israele dalla mano dell'Eterno».

Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, “Today we know that Yahweh is among us, because you have not committed this trespass against Yahweh. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of Yahweh’s hand.”

32 P oi Finehas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazar e i principi lasciarono i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad, e il paese di Galaad, e ritornarono al paese di Canaan presso i figli d'Israele, ai quali riferirono l'accaduto.

Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

33 L a cosa piacque ai figli d'Israele, e i figli d'Israele benedissero DIO, e non parlarono piú di salire a far guerra contro i figli di Ruben e di Gad per devastare il paese che essi abitavano.

The thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land in which the children of Reuben and the children of Gad lived.

34 E i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad chiamarono quell'altare "Testimone", perché dissero: «Esso è testimone fra noi che l'Eterno è DIO».

The children of Reuben and the children of Gad named the altar “A Witness Between Us that Yahweh is God.”
