1 O r avvenne in un giorno di sabato, dopo il grande sabato, che egli camminava attraverso i campi di grano, ed i suoi discepoli coglievano delle spighe e le mangiavano, sfregandole con le mani.

Now on the second Sabbath after the first, he was going through the grain fields. His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate, rubbing them in their hands.

2 E alcuni dei farisei dissero loro: «Perché fate ciò che non è lecito fare nei giorni di sabato?».

But some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why do you do that which is not lawful to do on the Sabbath day?”

3 M a Gesú, rispondendo, disse loro: «Non avete voi letto ciò che fece Davide e coloro che erano con lui quando ebbe fame?

Jesus, answering them, said, “Haven’t you read what David did when he was hungry, he, and those who were with him;

4 C ome egli entrò nella casa di Dio, prese i pani della presentazione, e ne mangiò e ne diede anche a quelli che erano con lui, sebbene non fosse lecito mangiarne se non ai soli sacerdoti?».

how he entered into God’s house, and took and ate the show bread, and gave also to those who were with him, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests alone?”

5 P oi disse loro: «Il Figlio dell'uomo è signore anche del sabato».

He said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

6 O r avvenne in un altro sabato che egli entrò nella sinagoga e insegnava; or là c'era un uomo la cui mano destra era secca.

It also happened on another Sabbath that he entered into the synagogue and taught. There was a man there, and his right hand was withered.

7 E i farisei e gli scribi lo stavano osservando se lo avesse guarito di sabato per poi accusarlo.

The scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against him.

8 M a egli conosceva i loro pensieri e disse all'uomo dalla mano secca: «Alzati e mettiti qui nel mezzo». Ed egli si alzò in piedi.

But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Rise up, and stand in the middle.” He arose and stood.

9 Q uindi Gesú disse loro: «Io vi domando: E' lecito, nei giorni di sabato fare del bene o del male, salvare una persona o ucciderla?».

Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you something: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good, or to do harm? To save a life, or to kill?”

10 E , volgendo lo sguardo intorno su tutti loro, disse a quell'uomo: «Stendi la tua mano!». Ed egli lo fece, e la sua mano fu resa sana come l'altra.

He looked around at them all, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did, and his hand was restored as sound as the other.

11 M a essi furono pieni di rabbia e discutevano fra loro che cosa potessero fare a Gesù.

But they were filled with rage, and talked with one another about what they might do to Jesus.

12 O r avvenne in quei giorni che egli se ne andò sul monte a pregare, e passò la notte in preghiera a Dio.

In these days, he went out to the mountain to pray, and he continued all night in prayer to God.

13 E quando fu giorno, chiamò a sé i suoi discepoli, e ne scelse dodici ai quali diede anche il nome di apostoli:

When it was day, he called his disciples, and from them he chose twelve, whom he also named apostles:

14 S imone, che soprannominò Pietro, e Andrea suo fratello, Giacomo e Giovanni, Filippo e Bartolomeo,

Simon, whom he also named Peter; Andrew, his brother; James; John; Philip; Bartholomew;

15 M atteo e Tommaso, Giacomo d'Alfeo e Simone, chiamato Zelota,

Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Simon, who was called the Zealot;

16 G iuda, fratello di Giacomo e Giuda Iscariota, che fu anche il traditore.

Judas the son of James; and Judas Iscariot, who also became a traitor.

17 P oi, sceso con loro, si fermò in un luogo pianeggiante, con la folla dei suoi discepoli e con un gran numero di popolo da tutta la Giudea, da Gerusalemme e dal litorale di Tiro e di Sidone, che erano venuti per udirlo e per essere guariti dalle loro malattie;

He came down with them, and stood on a level place, with a crowd of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases;

18 e anche quelli che erano tormentati da spiriti immondi erano guariti.

as well as those who were troubled by unclean spirits, and they were being healed.

19 E tutta la folla cercava di toccarlo, perché da lui usciva una potenza che guariva tutti.

All the multitude sought to touch him, for power came out of him and healed them all.

20 Q uindi egli, alzati gli occhi verso i suoi discepoli, diceva: «Beati voi, poveri perché vostro è il regno di Dio.

He lifted up his eyes to his disciples, and said, “Blessed are you who are poor, God’s Kingdom is yours.

21 B eati voi, che ora avete fame, perché sarete saziati, Beati voi, che ora piangete, perché riderete.

Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

22 B eati voi, quando gli uomini vi odieranno, vi scomunicheranno e vitupereranno, e bandiranno il vostro nome come malvagio, a causa del Figlio dell'uomo.

Blessed are you when men shall hate you, and when they shall exclude and mock you, and throw out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake.

23 R allegratevi in quel giorno e saltate di gioia, perché ecco, il vostro premio è grande in cielo, nello stesso modo infatti i loro padri trattavano i profeti.

Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers did the same thing to the prophets.

24 M a guai a voi ricchi, perché avete la vostra consolazione.

“But woe to you who are rich! For you have received your consolation.

25 G uai a voi che siete sazi, perché avrete fame. Guai a voi che ora ridete perché farete cordoglio e piangerete.

Woe to you, you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

26 G uai a voi, quando tutti gli uomini diranno bene di voi, perché allo stesso modo facevano i padri loro verso i falsi profeti.

Woe, when men speak well of you, for their fathers did the same thing to the false prophets.

27 M a io dico a voi che udite: Amate i vostri nemici; fate del bene a coloro che vi odiano.

“But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

28 B enedite coloro che vi maledicono e pregate per coloro che vi maltrattano.

bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you.

29 S e qualcuno ti percuote su una guancia, porgigli anche l'altra; e a chi ti toglie il mantello, non impedire di prenderti anche la tunica.

To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your coat also.

30 D a' a chiunque ti chiede; e se qualcuno ti toglie il tuo, non glielo ridomandare.

Give to everyone who asks you, and don’t ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again.

31 M a come volete che gli uomini facciano a voi, cosí fate a loro.

“As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them.

32 M a se amate coloro che vi amano, che merito ne avrete? Poiché anche i peccatori amano coloro che li amano.

If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

33 E se fate del bene a coloro che vi fanno del bene, che merito ne avrete? Poiché i peccatori fanno lo stesso.

If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.

34 E se prestate a coloro dai quali sperate di riavere, che merito ne avrete? Anche i peccatori prestano ai peccatori, per riceverne altrettanto.

If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive back as much.

35 M a amate i vostri nemici, fate del bene e prestate senza sperarne nulla, e il vostro premio sarà grande e sarete i figli dell'Altissimo, perché egli è benigno verso gli ingrati e i malvagi.

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.

36 S iate dunque misericordiosi, come anche il Padre vostro è misericordioso.

“Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful.

37 N on giudicate e non sarete giudicati; non condannate e non sarete condannati; perdonate e vi sarà perdonato.

Don’t judge, and you won’t be judged. Don’t condemn, and you won’t be condemned. Set free, and you will be set free.

38 D ate e vi sarà dato: una buona misura, pigiata, scossa e traboccante vi sarà versata in seno, perché con la misura con cui misurate, sarà altresí misurato a voi».

“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you.”

39 P oi egli disse loro una parabola: «Può un cieco far da guida a un altro cieco? Non cadranno tutti e due nella fossa?

He spoke a parable to them. “Can the blind guide the blind? Won’t they both fall into a pit?

40 N essun discepolo è da piú del suo maestro, anzi ogni discepolo ben addestrato sarà come il suo maestro.

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.

41 O ra, perché guardi la pagliuzza che e nell'occhio di tuo fratello e non scorgi la trave che è nel tuo proprio occhio?

Why do you see the speck of chaff that is in your brother’s eye, but don’t consider the beam that is in your own eye?

42 O come puoi dire al tuo fratello: "Fratello, lascia che tolga la pagliuzza che è nel tuo occhio", quando tu stesso non vedi la trave che è nel tuo proprio occhio? Ipocrita, togli prima la trave dal tuo occhio e allora potrai vedere bene per togliere la pagliuzza dall'occhio di tuo fratello.

Or how can you tell your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck of chaff that is in your eye,’ when you yourself don’t see the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck of chaff that is in your brother’s eye.

43 P oiché non c'è albero buono che faccia frutto cattivo, né albero cattivo che faccia frutto buono.

For there is no good tree that produces rotten fruit; nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit.

44 O gni albero infatti lo si riconosce dal proprio frutto, perché non si raccolgono fichi dalle spine e non si vendemmia uva da un rovo.

For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people don’t gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.

45 L 'uomo buono dal buon tesoro del suo cuore trae il bene; e l'uomo malvagio dal malvagio tesoro del suo cuore trae il male, perché la bocca di uno parla dall'abbondanza del cuore.

The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.

46 O ra, perché mi chiamate, Signore, Signore, e non fate quello che dico?

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things which I say?

47 C hiunque viene a me, e ode le mie parole e le mette in pratica, io vi mostrerò a chi e simile.

Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you who he is like.

48 E gli è simile ad un uomo che, costruendo una casa, ha scavato molto profondo e ha posto il fondamento sopra la roccia, e venuta una piena, il torrente ha investito quella casa, ma non l'ha potuta scrollare perché era stata fondata sulla roccia.

He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock.

49 C hi invece le ha udite e non le ha messe in pratica, è simile a un uomo che ha edificato una casa sopra la terra senza fondamento; quando il torrente l'ha investita, essa è subito caduta, e la sua rovina è stata grande».

But he who hears, and doesn’t do, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
