1 A scoltate questa parola, questo lamento che io elevo su di voi o casa d'Israele.

Listen to this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel.

2 L a vergine d'Israele è caduta e non si alzerà piú; essa giace abbandonata sul suo suolo e nessuno la rialza.

“The virgin of Israel has fallen; She shall rise no more. She is cast down on her land; there is no one to raise her up.”

3 P oiché cosí dice il Signore, l'Eterno: «La città che usciva con mille uomini resterà con cento, quella invece che usciva con cento resterà con dieci per la casa d'Israele».

For thus says the Lord Yahweh: “The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went out one hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”

4 P oiché cosí dice l'Eterno alla casa d'Israele: «Cercate me e vivrete

For Yahweh says to the house of Israel: “Seek me, and you will live;

5 m a non cercate Bethel non andate a Ghilgal, non proseguite fino a Beersceba, perché Ghilgal andrà certamente in cattività e Bethel sarà ridotta al nulla.

but don’t seek Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and don’t pass to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nothing.

6 C ercate l'Eterno e vivrete perché non irrompa come fuoco nella casa di Giuseppe e la divori, senza che in Bethel nessuno lo spenga.

Seek Yahweh, and you will live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, and there be no one to quench it in Bethel.

7 E gli abbandona quelli che mutano la rettitudine e la giustizia in assenzio sulla terra».

You who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth:

8 E gli ha fatto le Pleiadi e Orione, muta l'ombra di morte in aurora e rende il giorno oscuro come la notte; chiama le acque del mare e le riversa sulla faccia della terra: il suo nome è l'Eterno.

seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns the shadow of death into the morning, and makes the day dark with night; who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the surface of the earth, Yahweh is his name,

9 F a venire repentinamente la rovina sui potenti, e cosí la distruzione piomba sulle fortezze.

who brings sudden destruction on the strong, so that destruction comes on the fortress.

10 E ssi odiano chi li riprende alla porta e hanno in orrore chi parla con integrità.

They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks blamelessly.

11 Q uindi, poiché calpestate il povero ed esigete da lui tributi di frumento, anche se avete costruito case con pietre squadrate, non le abiterete; avete piantato vigne deliziose, ma non ne berrete il vino.

Therefore, because you trample on the poor, and take taxes from him of wheat: You have built houses of cut stone, but you will not dwell in them. You have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

12 I o infatti conosco quanto siano numerose le vostre trasgressioni e quanto gravi i vostri peccati; voi opprimete il giusto, accettate regali e fate torto ai poveri alla porta.

For I know how many your offenses, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the just, who take a bribe, and who turn aside the needy in the courts.

13 P erciò l'uomo prudente in questo tempo tacerà, perché il tempo è malvagio.

Therefore a prudent person keeps silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.

14 C ercate il bene e non il male, affinché viviate, e cosí l'Eterno, il DIO degli eserciti, sia con voi, come dite.

Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be with you, as you say.

15 O diate il male, amate il bene e stabilite saldamente il diritto alla porta. Forse l'Eterno, il Dio degli eserciti, userà misericordia col residuo di Giuseppe.

Hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the courts. It may be that Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”

16 P erciò cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO degli eserciti, il Signore: «In tutte le piazze ci sarà lamento e in tutte le strade si dirà: Ahimè, ahimè! Allora chiameranno l'agricoltore al lutto e quelli abili a piangere a fare lamenti.

Therefore Yahweh, the God of Armies, the Lord, says: “Wailing will be in all the wide ways; and they will say in all the streets, ‘Alas! Alas!’ and they will call the farmer to mourning, and those who are skillful in lamentation to wailing.

17 I n tutte le vigne ci sarà lamento, perché io passerò in mezzo a te», dice l'Eterno.

In all vineyards there will be wailing; for I will pass through the middle of you,” says Yahweh.

18 G uai a voi che desiderate il giorno dell'Eterno! Che sarà mai per voi il giorno dell'Eterno? Sarà un giorno di tenebre e non di luce.

“Woe to you who desire the day of Yahweh! Why do you long for the day of Yahweh? It is darkness, and not light.

19 S arà come quando uno fugge davanti a un leone e s'imbatte in un orso; o entra in casa, appoggia la mano alla parete e un serpente lo morde.

As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; Or he went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a snake bit him.

20 I l giorno dell'Eterno non è forse tenebre e non luce, molto tenebroso e senza alcun splendore?

Won’t the day of Yahweh be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?

21 « Io odio, disprezzo le vostre feste, non provo piacere nelle vostre solenni assemblee.

I hate, I despise your feasts, and I can’t stand your solemn assemblies.

22 A nche se mi offrite i vostri olocausti e le vostre oblazioni di cibo, io non le gradirò, né riguarderò con favore ai sacrifici di ringraziamento di bestie grasse.

Yes, though you offer me your burnt offerings and meal offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat animals.

23 A llontana da me il rumore dei tuoi canti, perché non voglio udire la musica delle tue arpe.

Take away from me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.

24 M a scorra il diritto come acqua e la giustizia come un corso d'acqua perenne.

But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream.

25 O casa d'Israele, mi avete offerto sacrifici e oblazioni di cibo nel deserto per quarant'anni?

“Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, house of Israel?

26 V oi avete pure trasportato Sikkuth vostro re e Kiun, le vostre immagini, la stella dei vostri dèi, che vi siete fatti.

You also carried the tent of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.

27 P erciò io vi farò andare in cattività al di là di Damasco», dice l'Eterno, il cui nome è DIO degli eserciti.

Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus,” says Yahweh, whose name is the God of Armies.
