1 Q ueste sono le parole che Mosè rivolse a Israele di là dal Giordano, nel deserto, nell'Arabah di fronte a Suf, fra Paran, Tofel, Laban, Hatseroth e Di-Zahab.

These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah over against Suf, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

2 V i sono undici giorni di cammino dal monte Horeb, per la via del monte Seir, fino a Kadesh-Barnea.

It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.

3 N el quarantesimo anno, nell'undicesimo mese, nel primo giorno del mese, Mosè parlò ai figli d'Israele, secondo tutto ciò che l'Eterno gli aveva comandato di dir loro.

In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that Yahweh had given him in commandment to them;

4 d opo aver sconfitto Sihon, re degli Amorei che abitava in Heshbon, e Og re di Bashan che abitava in Ashtaroth e in Edrei.

after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.

5 D i là dal Giordano, nel paese di Moab, Mosè cominciò a spiegare questa legge, dicendo:

Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying,

6 « L'Eterno, il nostro DIO, ci parlò in Horeb e ci disse: "Voi avete dimorato abbastanza vicino a questa montagna;

“Yahweh our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, ‘You have lived long enough at this mountain.

7 l evate le tende, mettetevi in cammino e andate verso la regione montuosa degli Amorei e verso tutti i luoghi vicini nell'Arabah, nella regione montuosa e nel bassopiano, nel Neghev e sulla costa del mare, nel paese dei Cananei e al Libano, fino al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate.

Turn, and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites, and to all the places near there, in the Arabah, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and in the South, and by the seashore, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 E cco, io ho posto il paese davanti a voi; entrate e prendete possesso del paese che l'Eterno giurò di dare ai vostri padri, ad Abrahamo, Isacco, e Giacobbe, a loro e alla loro discendenza dopo di loro"».

Behold, I have set the land before you. Go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’”

9 « In quel tempo io vi parlai e vi dissi: "Io non posso da solo portare il peso di tutti voi.

I spoke to you at that time, saying, “I am not able to bear you myself alone.

10 L 'Eterno, il vostro DIO, vi ha moltiplicati, ed eccovi oggi numerosi come le stelle del cielo.

Yahweh your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as the stars of the sky for multitude.

11 L 'Eterno, il DIO dei vostri padri, vi renda mille volte ancor piú numerosi, e vi benedica come vi ha promesso!

Yahweh, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are, and bless you, as he has promised you!

12 M a come posso io, da solo, portare il vostro carico, il vostro peso e le vostre liti?

How can I myself alone bear your problems, your burdens, and your strife?

13 S cegliete dalle vostre tribú degli uomini saggi e dotati di discernimento e di esperienza, e io li costituirò vostri capi".

Take wise men of understanding and well known according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.”

14 E voi mi rispondeste, dicendo: "La cosa che tu proponi di fare è buona".

You answered me, and said, “The thing which you have spoken is good to do.”

15 A llora presi i capi delle vostre tribú, uomini saggi e dotati di esperienza e li costituii vostri capi, capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine, capi di decine, e ufficiali delle vostre tribú.

So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.

16 I n quel tempo diedi quest'ordine ai vostri giudici dicendo: "Ascoltate le dispute tra i vostri fratelli e giudicate con giustizia tra un uomo e suo fratello o il forestiero che sta con lui.

I commanded your judges at that time, saying, “Hear cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.

17 N ei vostri giudizi non avrete riguardi personali; darete ascolto al piccolo e al grande; non temerete alcun uomo, perché il giudizio appartiene a DIO; il caso che è troppo difficile per voi lo recherete a me, e io lo ascolterò".

You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.”

18 I n quel tempo io vi ordinai tutte le cose che dovevate fare».

I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.

19 « Poi partimmo dal monte Horeb e attraversammo tutto quel grande e spaventoso deserto che avete veduto dirigendoci verso la regione montuosa degli Amorei, come l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, ci aveva comandato, e giungemmo a Kadesh-Barnea.

We traveled from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as Yahweh our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea.

20 A llora vi dissi: "Siete arrivati alla regione montuosa degli Amorei, che l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, ci dà.

I said to you, “You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which Yahweh our God gives to us.

21 E cco, l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ha posto il paese davanti a te; sali e prendine possesso, come l'Eterno, il DIO dei tuoi padri, ti ha detto; non avere paura e non scoraggiarti".

Behold, Yahweh your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”

22 A llora voi, tutti quanti voi, vi avvicinaste a me e diceste: "Mandiamo degli uomini davanti a noi, che esplorino il paese per noi e ci riferiscano sulla strada per la quale noi dovremo salire, e sulle città nelle quali dovremo entrare".

You came near to me, everyone of you, and said, “Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.”

23 L a proposta mi piacque; così presi dodici uomini tra voi, uno per tribú.

The thing pleased me well. I took twelve men of you, one man for every tribe.

24 E d essi partirono, salirono verso i monti, giunsero alla valle di Eshkol ed esplorarono il paese.

They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.

25 P resero con sé alcuni frutti del paese, ce li portarono e ci fecero la loro relazione, dicendo: "Il paese che l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, sta per darci è buono"».

They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, “It is a good land which Yahweh our God gives to us.”

26 « Ma voi non voleste salirvi e vi ribellaste all'ordine dell'Eterno, del vostro DIO;

Yet you wouldn’t go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your God.

27 e mormoraste nelle vostre tende e diceste: "L'Eterno ci odia, per questo ci ha fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto per darci in mano agli Amorei e per distruggerci.

You murmured in your tents, and said, “Because Yahweh hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

28 D ove possiamo andare? I nostri fratelli ci hanno fatto struggere il cuore dicendo: E' un popolo più grande e più alto di noi; le città sono grandi e fortificate fino al cielo; vi abbiamo perfino visto i figli degli Anakim".

Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there!’”

29 A llora io vi dissi: "Non spaventatevi e non abbiate paura di loro.

Then I said to you, “Don’t dread, neither be afraid of them.

30 L 'Eterno, il vostro DIO, che va davanti a voi, combatterà egli stesso per voi, come ha fatto sotto i vostri occhi in Egitto.

Yahweh your God who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,

31 e nel deserto, dove hai visto come l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti ha portato come un uomo porta il proprio figlio, per tutto il cammino che avete percorso, finché siete arrivati a questo luogo".

and in the wilderness, where you have seen how that Yahweh your God bore you, as a man does bear his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place.”

32 N onostante questo, non aveste fiducia nell'Eterno vostro DIO,

Yet in this thing you didn’t believe Yahweh your God,

33 c he andava davanti a voi nel cammino per cercarvi un luogo dove piantare le tende, con il fuoco di notte e con la nuvola di giorno, per mostrarvi per quale via dovevate andare.

who went before you on the way, to seek out a place for you to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day.

34 C osì l'Eterno udì le vostre parole, si adirò e giurò dicendo:

Yahweh heard the voice of your words, and was angry, and swore, saying,

35 " Certo, nessuno degli uomini di questa malvagia generazione vedrà il buon paese che ho giurato di dare ai vostri padri,

“Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land, which I swore to give to your fathers,

36 a d eccezione di Caleb, figlio di Jefunneh. Egli lo vedrà; e a lui e ai suoi figli darò la terra che egli ha calcato, perché ha pienamente seguito l'Eterno".

except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it. I will give the land that he has trodden on to him, and to his children, because he has wholly followed Yahweh.”

37 A nche contro a me l'Eterno si adirò per colpa vostra e disse: "Neppure tu vi entrerai;

Also Yahweh was angry with me for your sakes, saying, “You also shall not go in there.

38 m a Giosuè, figlio di Nun, che ti sta davanti, vi entrerà; fortificalo, perché egli metterà Israele in possesso del paese.

Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

39 E i vostri fanciulli, di cui avete detto che sarebbero divenuti preda i nemici, vostri figli, che oggi non conoscono né il bene né il male, sono quelli che vi entreranno; Io darò a loro ed essi lo possederanno.

Moreover your little ones, whom you said should be captured or killed, and your children, who today have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there, and I will give it to, and they shall possess it.

40 M a voi tornate indietro e incamminatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del Mar Rosso".

But as for you, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”

41 A llora voi rispondeste, dicendomi: "Abbiam peccato contro l'Eterno; noi saliremo e combatteremo esattamente come l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, ci ha ordinato". E ognuno di voi cinse le armi, e vi metteste temerariamente a salire verso la regione montuosa.

Then you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against Yahweh, we will go up and fight, according to all that Yahweh our God commanded us.” Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.

42 E l'Eterno mi disse: "Di' loro: Non salite e non combattete, perché io non sono in mezzo a voi, e voi sareste sconfitti davanti ai vostri nemici".

Yahweh said to me, “Tell them, ‘Don’t go up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest you be struck before your enemies.’”

43 I o ve lo dissi, ma voi non mi deste ascolto; anzi vi ribellaste all'ordine dell'Eterno, vi comportaste presuntuosamente e saliste verso la regione montuosa.

So I spoke to you, and you didn’t listen; but you rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country.

44 A llora gli Amorei, che abitano quella regione montuosa, uscirono contro di voi, vi inseguirono come fanno le api e vi respinsero da Seir fino a Hormah.

The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.

45 P oi voi tornaste e piangeste davanti all'Eterno; ma l'Eterno non diede ascolto alla vostra voce e non vi prestò orecchio.

You returned and wept before Yahweh; but Yahweh didn’t listen to your voice, nor turn his ear to you.

46 C osì rimaneste in Kadesh molti giorni, tutto il tempo che vi fermaste là».

So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.
