My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger;

You are trapped by the words of your mouth. You are ensnared with the words of your mouth.

3 F a' questo dunque, figlio mio, e disimpegnati, perché sei caduto in mano del tuo vicino. Va' gettati ai suoi piedi e insisti con forza il tuo vicino.

Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, since you have come into the hand of your neighbor. Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbor.

4 N on dar sonno ai tuoi occhi né riposo alle tue palpebre;

Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.

5 d isimpegnati come la gazzella dalla mano del cacciatore, come l'uccello dalla mano dell'uccellatore.

Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

6 V a' dalla formica, o pigro, considera le sue abitudini e diventa saggio.

Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise;

7 E ssa non ha né capo né sorvegliante né padrone;

which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,

8 s i procura il cibo nell'estate e raduna le sue provviste durante la mietitura.

provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

9 F ino a quando, o pigro, rimarrai a dormire? Quando ti scuoterai dal tuo sonno?

How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?

10 D ormire un po' sonnecchiare un po' incrociare un po' le braccia per riposare,

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

11 c osí la tua povertà verrà come un ladro, e la tua indigenza come un uomo armato.

so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.

12 L a persona da nulla, l'uomo malvagio, cammina con una bocca perversa;

A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth;

13 a mmicca con gli occhi, parla con i piedi fa cenni con le dita;

who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers;

14 h a la perversità nel cuore, macchina del male continuamente, e semina discordie.

in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord.

15 P erciò la sua rovina verrà improvvisamente, in un attimo sarà distrutto senza rimedio.

Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.

16 L 'Eterno odia queste sei cose, anzi sette sono per lui un abominio:

There are six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him:

17 g li occhi alteri, la lingua bugiarda, le mani che versano sangue innocente,

haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood;

18 i l cuore che escogita progetti malvagi, i piedi che sono veloci nel correre al male,

a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief,

19 i l falso testimone che proferisce menzogne e chi semina discordie tra fratelli.

a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.

20 F iglio mio, custodisci il comandamento di tuo padre e non dimenticare l'insegnamento di tua madre.

My son, keep your father’s commandment, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching.

21 T ienili del continuo legati sul tuo cuore e fissali intorno al tuo collo.

Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck.

22 Q uando camminerai, ti guideranno; quando riposerai, veglieranno su di te; quando ti risveglierai, parleranno con te.

When you walk, it will lead you. When you sleep, it will watch over you. When you awake, it will talk with you.

23 P oiché il comandamento è una lampada, l'insegnamento una luce, e le correzioni dell'ammaestramento sono la via della vita,

For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,

24 p er proteggerti dalla donna malvagia, dalle lusinghe della lingua della straniera.

to keep you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue.

25 N on desiderare in cuor tuo la sua bellezza e non lasciarti avvincere dalle sue palpebre.

Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.

26 P oiché per una prostituta uno si riduce a un tozzo di pane, e la moglie di un altro dà la caccia all'anima preziosa di un uomo.

For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread. The adulteress hunts for your precious life.

27 P uò un uomo portare fuoco nel suo seno senza bruciarsi gli abiti?

Can a man scoop fire into his lap, and his clothes not be burned?

28 0 può un uomo camminare su carboni accesi senza bruciarsi i piedi?

Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?

29 C osí è di chi va dalla moglie di un altro; chi la tocca non rimarrà impunito.

So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife. Whoever touches her will not be unpunished.

30 N on si disprezza il ladro se ruba per soddisfare l'appetito quando ha fame;

Men don’t despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry:

31 m a se viene colto in fallo, dovrà restituire sette volte, e dare tutti i beni della sua casa.

but if he is found, he shall restore seven times. He shall give all the wealth of his house.

32 M a chi commette adulterio con una donna è privo di senno; chi fa questo distrugge la sua stessa vita.

He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul.

33 T roverà ferite e disprezzo, e la sua vergogna non sarà mai cancellata,

He will get wounds and dishonor. His reproach will not be wiped away.

34 p erché la gelosia rende furioso il marito, che sarà senza pietà nel giorno della vendetta.

For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband. He won’t spare in the day of vengeance.

35 E gli non accetterà alcun riscatto e non sarà soddisfatto, anche se dovesse fare molti regali.

He won’t regard any ransom, neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.
