1 M uitos já se dedicaram a elaborar um relato dos fatos que se cumpriram entre nós,

Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us,

2 c onforme nos foram transmitidos por aqueles que desde o início foram testemunhas oculares e servos da palavra.

just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us,

3 E u mesmo investiguei tudo cuidadosamente, desde o começo, e decidi escrever-te um relato ordenado, ó excelentíssimo Teófilo,

it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus,

4 p ara que tenhas a certeza das coisas que te foram ensinadas. O Nascimento de João Batista é Predito

that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed. John’s Birth Announced to Zacharias

5 N o tempo de Herodes, rei da Judéia, havia um sacerdote chamado Zacarias, que pertencia ao grupo sacerdotal de Abias; Isabel, sua mulher, também era descendente de Arão.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

6 A mbos eram justos aos olhos de Deus, obedecendo de modo irrepreensível a todos os mandamentos e preceitos do Senhor.

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7 M as eles não tinham filhos, porque Isabel era estéril; e ambos eram de idade avançada.

But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

8 C erta vez, estando de serviço o seu grupo, Zacarias estava servindo como sacerdote diante de Deus.

So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division,

9 E le foi escolhido por sorteio, de acordo com o costume do sacerdócio, para entrar no santuário do Senhor e oferecer incenso.

according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10 C hegando a hora de oferecer incenso, o povo todo estava orando do lado de fora.

And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.

11 E ntão um anjo do Senhor apareceu a Zacarias, à direita do altar do incenso.

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12 Q uando Zacarias o viu, perturbou-se e foi dominado pelo medo.

And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13 M as o anjo lhe disse: “Não tenha medo, Zacarias; sua oração foi ouvida. Isabel, sua mulher, lhe dará um filho, e você lhe dará o nome de João.

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

14 E le será motivo de prazer e de alegria para você, e muitos se alegrarão por causa do nascimento dele,

And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

15 p ois será grande aos olhos do Senhor. Ele nunca tomará vinho nem bebida fermentada, e será cheio do Espírito Santo desde antes do seu nascimento.

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

16 F ará retornar muitos dentre o povo de Israel ao Senhor, o seu Deus.

And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.

17 E irá adiante do Senhor, no espírito e no poder de Elias, para fazer voltar o coração dos pais a seus filhos e os desobedientes à sabedoria dos justos, para deixar um povo preparado para o Senhor”.

He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

18 Z acarias perguntou ao anjo: “Como posso ter certeza disso? Sou velho, e minha mulher é de idade avançada”.

And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

19 O anjo respondeu: “Sou Gabriel, o que está sempre na presença de Deus. Fui enviado para lhe transmitir estas boas novas.

And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings.

20 A gora você ficará mudo. Não poderá falar até o dia em que isso acontecer, porque não acreditou em minhas palavras, que se cumprirão no tempo oportuno”.

But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”

21 E nquanto isso, o povo esperava por Zacarias, estranhando sua demora no santuário.

And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he lingered so long in the temple.

22 Q uando saiu, não conseguia falar nada; o povo percebeu então que ele tivera uma visão no santuário. Zacarias fazia sinais para eles, mas permanecia mudo.

But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless.

23 Q uando se completou seu período de serviço, ele voltou para casa.

So it was, as soon as the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house.

24 D epois disso, Isabel, sua mulher, engravidou e durante cinco meses não saiu de casa.

Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying,

25 E ela dizia: “Isto é obra do Senhor! Agora ele olhou para mim favoravelmente, para desfazer a minha humilhação perante o povo”. O Nascimento de Jesus é Predito

“Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.” Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary

26 N o sexto mês Deus enviou o anjo Gabriel a Nazaré, cidade da Galiléia,

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,

27 a uma virgem prometida em casamento a certo homem chamado José, descendente de Davi. O nome da virgem era Maria.

to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

28 O anjo, aproximando-se dela, disse: “Alegre-se, agraciada! O Senhor está com você!”

And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”

29 M aria ficou perturbada com essas palavras, pensando no que poderia significar esta saudação.

But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.

30 M as o anjo lhe disse: “Não tenha medo, Maria; você foi agraciada por Deus!

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

31 V ocê ficará grávida e dará à luz um filho, e lhe porá o nome de Jesus.

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.

32 E le será grande e será chamado Filho do Altíssimo. O Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de seu pai Davi,

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

33 e ele reinará para sempre sobre o povo de Jacó; seu Reino jamais terá fim”.

And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

34 P erguntou Maria ao anjo: “Como acontecerá isso, se sou virgem?”

Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

35 O anjo respondeu: “O Espírito Santo virá sobre você, e o poder do Altíssimo a cobrirá com a sua sombra. Assim, aquele que há de nascer será chamado Santo, Filho de Deus.

And the angel answered and said to her, “ The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

36 T ambém Isabel, sua parenta, terá um filho na velhice; aquela que diziam ser estéril já está em seu sexto mês de gestação.

Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.

37 P ois nada é impossível para Deus”.

For with God nothing will be impossible.”

38 R espondeu Maria: “Sou serva do Senhor; que aconteça comigo conforme a tua palavra”. Então o anjo a deixou. Maria Visita Isabel

Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 N aqueles dias, Maria preparou-se e foi depressa para uma cidade da região montanhosa da Judéia,

Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah,

40 o nde entrou na casa de Zacarias e saudou Isabel.

and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

41 Q uando Isabel ouviu a saudação de Maria, o bebê agitou-se em seu ventre, e Isabel ficou cheia do Espírito Santo.

And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

42 E m alta voz exclamou: “Bendita é você entre as mulheres, e bendito é o filho que você dará à luz!

Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

43 M as por que sou tão agraciada, ao ponto de me visitar a mãe do meu Senhor?

But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44 L ogo que a sua saudação chegou aos meus ouvidos, o bebê que está em meu ventre agitou-se de alegria.

For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

45 F eliz é aquela que creu que se cumprirá aquilo que o Senhor lhe disse!” O Cântico de Maria

Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.” The Song of Mary

46 E ntão disse Maria: “Minha alma engrandece ao Senhor

And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord,

47 e o meu espírito se alegra em Deus, meu Salvador,

And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

48 p ois atentou para a humildade da sua serva. De agora em diante, todas as gerações me chamarão bem-aventurada,

For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.

49 p ois o Poderoso fez grandes coisas em meu favor; santo é o seu nome.

For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name.

50 A sua misericórdia estende-se aos que o temem, de geração em geração.

And His mercy is on those who fear Him From generation to generation.

51 E le realizou poderosos feitos com seu braço; dispersou os que são soberbos no mais íntimo do coração.

He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

52 D errubou governantes dos seus tronos, mas exaltou os humildes.

He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly.

53 E ncheu de coisas boas os famintos, mas despediu de mãos vazias os ricos.

He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty.

54 A judou a seu servo Israel, lembrando-se da sua misericórdia

He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy,

55 p ara com Abraão e seus descendentes para sempre, como dissera aos nossos antepassados”.

As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever.”

56 M aria ficou com Isabel cerca de três meses e depois voltou para casa. O Nascimento de João Batista

And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house. Birth of John the Baptist

57 A o se completar o tempo de Isabel dar à luz, ela teve um filho.

Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son.

58 S eus vizinhos e parentes ouviram falar da grande misericórdia que o Senhor lhe havia demonstrado e se alegraram com ela.

When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her. Circumcision of John the Baptist

59 N o oitavo dia foram circuncidar o menino e queriam dar-lhe o nome do pai, Zacarias;

So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias.

60 m as sua mãe tomou a palavra e disse: “Não! Ele será chamado João”.

His mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.”

61 D isseram-lhe: “Você não tem nenhum parente com esse nome”.

But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”

62 E ntão fizeram sinais ao pai do menino, para saber como queria que a criança se chamasse.

So they made signs to his father—what he would have him called.

63 E le pediu uma tabuinha e, para admiração de todos, escreveu: “O nome dele é João”.

And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled.

64 I mediatamente sua boca se abriu, sua língua se soltou e ele começou a falar, louvando a Deus.

Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God.

65 T odos os vizinhos ficaram cheios de temor, e por toda a região montanhosa da Judéia se falava sobre essas coisas.

Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea.

66 T odos os que ouviam falar disso se perguntavam: “O que vai ser este menino?” Pois a mão do Senhor estava com ele. O Cântico de Zacarias

And all those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him. Zacharias’ Prophecy

67 S eu pai, Zacarias, foi cheio do Espírito Santo e profetizou:

Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

68 “ Louvado seja o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, porque visitou e redimiu o seu povo.

“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited and redeemed His people,

69 E le promoveu poderosa salvação para nós, na linhagem do seu servo Davi,

And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of His servant David,

70 ( como falara pelos seus santos profetas, na antigüidade),

As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, Who have been since the world began,

71 s alvando-nos dos nossos inimigos e da mão de todos os que nos odeiam,

That we should be saved from our enemies And from the hand of all who hate us,

72 p ara mostrar sua misericórdia aos nossos antepassados e lembrar sua santa aliança,

To perform the mercy promised to our fathers And to remember His holy covenant,

73 o juramento que fez ao nosso pai Abraão:

The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:

74 r esgatar-nos da mão dos nossos inimigos para o servirmos sem medo,

To grant us that we, Being delivered from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,

75 e m santidade e justiça, diante dele todos os nossos dias.

In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.

76 E você, menino, será chamado profeta do Altíssimo, pois irá adiante do Senhor, para lhe preparar o caminho,

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,

77 p ara dar ao seu povo o conhecimento da salvação, mediante o perdão dos seus pecados,

To give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins,

78 p or causa das ternas misericórdias de nosso Deus, pelas quais do alto nos visitará o sol nascente,

Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us;

79 p ara brilhar sobre aqueles que estão vivendo nas trevas e na sombra da morte, e guiar nossos pés no caminho da paz”.

To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

80 E o menino crescia e se fortalecia em espírito; e viveu no deserto, até aparecer publicamente a Israel.

So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.
