1 A cestea sunt cele din urmă cuvinte ale lui David: Rostirea lui David, fiul lui Işai, rostirea omului înălţat de Dumnezeu, unsul Dumnezeului lui Iacov şi cântăreţul plăcut al lui Israel:

Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse says, the man who was raised on high says, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel:

2 „ Duhul Domnului vorbeşte prin mine şi Cuvântul Lui este pe limba mea.

“Yahweh’s Spirit spoke by me. His word was on my tongue.

3 D umnezeul lui Israel a vorbit, Stânca lui Israel mi-a zis: «Cel care-i cârmuieşte pe oameni cu dreptate, stăpânind cu frică de Dumnezeu,

The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me, ‘One who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of God,

4 e ste ca lumina dimineţii, atunci când răsare soarele într-o dimineaţă senină; el seamănă cu razele soarelui după ploaie, care fac să crească iarba din pământ».

shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, when the tender grass springs out of the earth, through clear shining after rain.’

5 N u este aşa Casa mea faţă de Dumnezeu? Căci El a încheiat cu mine un legământ veşnic, bine întocmit în toate privinţele şi bine păzit. Nu va face El să răsară din acesta tot ce este spre mântuirea şi bucuria mea?

Most certainly my house is not so with God, yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure, for it is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he doesn’t make it grow.

6 N elegiuiţii însă sunt toţi ca nişte spini buni de aruncat, pe care nu poţi să-i iei cu mâna.

But all the ungodly will be as thorns to be thrust away, because they can’t be taken with the hand,

7 O ricine îi atinge foloseşte o unealtă de fier sau mânerul unei suliţe şi-i arde pe loc. Vitejii lui David

But the man who touches them must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear. They will be utterly burned with fire in their place.”

8 A cestea sunt numele vitejilor lui David: Ioşeb-Başebet, un tahchemonit, era căpetenia celor trei. El şi-a ridicat suliţa împotriva a opt sute de duşmani pe care i-a ucis într-o singură împrejurare.

These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb Basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite, against eight hundred slain at one time.

9 U rmătorul era Elazar, fiul lui Dodo, urmaşul lui Ahohi. Şi el a fost unul dintre cei trei viteji care, împreună cu David, au ţinut piept filistenilor adunaţi la Pas-Damim pentru război. Atunci israeliţii băteau în retragere,

After him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines who were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel had gone away.

10 î nsă el a rămas pe loc şi a ucis la filisteni până când i-a obosit mâna şi i-a rămas înţepenită pe sabie. Domnul a dat o mare biruinţă în ziua aceea. Oştirea s-a întors la Elazar numai ca să ia prada.

He arose and struck the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand froze to the sword; and Yahweh worked a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to take plunder.

11 U n alt viteaz a fost Şama, fiul hararitului Aghe. Odată, filistenii se strânseseră la Lehi, unde se afla un ogor plin cu linte. Oştirea fugise dinaintea filistenilor,

After him was Shammah the son of Agee a Hararite. The Philistines had gathered together into a troop, where there was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines.

12 î nsă Şama a stat în mijlocul ogorului şi l-a apărat ucigându-i pe filisteni. Domnul a dat o mare biruinţă.

But he stood in the middle of the plot and defended it, and killed the Philistines; and Yahweh worked a great victory.

13 A ltădată, pe timpul secerişului, cei trei, dintre cele treizeci de căpetenii, au venit la David, la peştera Adulam, în timp ce o trupă de filisteni îşi aşezase tabăra în valea Refaim.

Three of the thirty chief men went down, and came to David in the harvest time to the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

14 D avid se afla atunci în fortăreaţă, iar garnizoana filistenilor se afla la Betleem.

David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.

15 L ui David i s-a făcut sete şi a întrebat: „Cine îmi va aduce apă din fântâna de lângă poarta Betleemului?“

David longed, and said, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!”

16 C ei trei viteji au răzbit prin tabăra filistenilor, au scos apă din fântâna de lângă poarta Betleemului şi au adus-o cu bine la David. El însă nu a vrut s-o bea, ci a vărsat-o înaintea Domnului,

The three mighty men broke through the army of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David; but he would not drink of it, but poured it out to Yahweh.

17 s punând: „Departe de mine, Doamne, să fac aşa ceva! Să beau eu sângele bărbaţilor care şi-au pus viaţa în primejdie?“ Şi n-a băut din acea apă. Astfel de isprăvi făceau cei trei viteji.

He said, “Be it far from me, Yahweh, that I should do this! Isn’t this the blood of the men who risked their lives to go?” Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.

18 A bişai, fratele lui Ioab, fiul Ţeruiei, era căpetenia celor trei. El şi-a ridicat suliţa împotriva a trei sute de duşmani şi i-a omorât. Şi astfel el şi-a câştigat un renume alături de cei trei.

Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. He lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them, and had a name among the three.

19 E ra mai respectat decât cei trei, ajungând chiar căpetenia lor, dar nu s-a ridicat la valoarea celor trei.

Wasn’t he most honorable of the three? therefore he was made their captain. However he wasn’t included as one of the three.

20 B enaia, fiul lui Iehoiada, era un viteaz din Kabţeel care a făcut mari isprăvi. El a ucis doi dintre cei mai viteji moabiţi, iar într-o zi în care ninsese a coborât într-o fântână, unde a omorât un leu.

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit in a time of snow.

21 A mai omorât, de asemenea, şi un egiptean uriaş. Egipteanul era înarmat cu o suliţă, în timp ce Benaia s-a dus înspre el doar cu un toiag. El a smuls suliţa din mâna egipteanului şi l-a ucis cu propria lui suliţă.

He killed a huge Egyptian, and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.

22 A stfel de isprăvi făcea Benaia, fiul lui Iehoiada, devenind la fel de vestit ca cei trei viteji.

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did these things, and had a name among the three mighty men.

23 E ra mai respectat decât cei treizeci, însă nu s-a ridicat la înălţimea celor trei. David l-a numit conducătorul gărzii sale personale.

He was more honorable than the thirty, but he didn’t attain to the three. David set him over his guard.

24 D intre cei treizeci făceau parte: Asael, fratele lui Ioab; Elhanan, fiul lui Dodo din Betleem;

Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty: Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,

25 h aroditul Şama; haroditul Elika;

Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite,

26 p altitul Heleţ; Ira, fiul tekoanitului Icheş;

Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite,

27 A biezer din Anatot; huşatitul Mebunai;

Abiezer the Anathothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite,

28 a hohitul Ţalmon; netofatitul Maharai;

Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite,

29 H eled, fiul netofatitului Baana; Itai, fiul lui Ribai, din Ghiva beniamiţilor;

Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin,

30 p iratonitul Benaia; Hidai din văile Gaaş;

Benaiah a Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash.

31 a rbatitul Abi-Albon; barhumitul Azmavet;

Abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite,

32 ş aalbonitul Eliahba; fiii lui Iaşen; Ionatan,

Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan,

Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Ararite,

Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maacathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,

Hezro the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite,

36 I gal, fiul lui Natan din Ţoba; gaditul Bani;

Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite,

37 a monitul Ţelek; beerotitul Naharai, cel ce-i ducea armele lui Ioab, fiul Ţeruiei;

Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, armor bearers to Joab the son of Zeruiah,

38 i tritul Ira, itritul Gareb

Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,

39 ş i hititul Urie. Erau cu toţii în număr de treizeci şi şapte.

and Uriah the Hittite: thirty-seven in all.
