1 N ow I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all,

Ora, digo que por todo o tempo em que o herdeiro é menino, em nada difere de um servo, ainda que seja senhor de tudo;

2 b ut is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father.

mas está debaixo de tutores e curadores até o tempo determinado pelo pai.

3 E ven so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world.

Assim também nós, quando éramos meninos, estávamos reduzidos ã servidão debaixo dos rudimentos do mundo;

4 B ut when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

mas, vindo a plenitude dos tempos, Deus enviou seu Filho, nascido de mulher, nascido debaixo de lei,

5 t o redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

para resgatar os que estavam debaixo de lei, a fim de recebermos a adoção de filhos.

6 A nd because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

E, porque sois filhos, Deus enviou aos nossos corações o Espírito de seu Filho, que clama: Aba, Pai.

7 T herefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. Fears for the Church

Portanto já não és mais servo, mas filho; e se és filho, és também herdeiro por Deus.

8 B ut then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods.

Outrora, quando não conhecíeis a Deus, servíeis aos que por natureza não são deuses;

9 B ut now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage?

agora, porém, que já conheceis a Deus, ou, melhor, sendo conhecidos por Deus, como tornais outra vez a esses rudimentos fracos e pobres, aos quais de novo quereis servir?

10 Y ou observe days and months and seasons and years.

Guardais dias, e meses, e tempos, e anos.

11 I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain.

Temo a vosso respeito não haja eu trabalhado em vão entre vós.

12 B rethren, I urge you to become like me, for I became like you. You have not injured me at all.

Irmãos, rogo-vos que vos torneis como eu, porque também eu me tornei como vós. Nenhum mal me fizestes;

13 Y ou know that because of physical infirmity I preached the gospel to you at the first.

e vós sabeis que por causa de uma enfermidade da carne vos anunciei o evangelho a primeira vez,

14 A nd my trial which was in my flesh you did not despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

e aquilo que na minha carne era para vós uma tentação, não o desprezastes nem o repelistes, antes me recebestes como a um anjo de Deus, mesmo como a Cristo Jesus.

15 W hat then was the blessing you enjoyed? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me.

Onde está, pois, aquela vossa satisfação? Porque vos dou testemunho de que, se possível fora, teríeis arrancado os vossos olhos, e mos teríeis dado.

16 H ave I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?

Tornei-me acaso vosso inimigo, porque vos disse a verdade?

17 T hey zealously court you, but for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you may be zealous for them.

Eles vos procuram zelosamente não com bons motivos, mas querem vos excluir, para que zelosamente os procureis a eles.

18 B ut it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you.

No que é bom, é bom serdes sempre procurados, e não só quando estou presente convosco.

19 M y little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you,

Meus filhinhos, por quem de novo sinto as dores de parto, até que Cristo seja formado em vós;

20 I would like to be present with you now and to change my tone; for I have doubts about you. Two Covenants

eu bem quisera estar presente convosco agora, e mudar o tom da minha voz; porque estou perplexo a vosso respeito.

21 T ell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law?

Dizei-me, os que quereis estar debaixo da lei, não ouvis vós a lei?

22 F or it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman.

Porque está escrito que Abraão teve dois filhos, um da escrava, e outro da livre.

23 B ut he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,

Todavia o que era da escrava nasceu segundo a carne, mas, o que era da livre, por promessa.

24 w hich things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar—

O que se entende por alegoria: pois essas mulheres são dois pactos; um do monte Sinai, que dá ã luz filhos para a servidão, e que é Agar.

25 f or this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children—

Ora, esta Agar é o monte Sinai na Arábia e corresponde ã Jerusalém atual, pois é escrava com seus filhos.

26 b ut the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.

Mas a Jerusalém que é de cima é livre; a qual é nossa mãe.

27 F or it is written: “Rejoice, O barren, You who do not bear! Break forth and shout, You who are not in labor! For the desolate has many more children Than she who has a husband.”

Pois está escrito: Alegra-te, estéril, que não dás ã luz; esforça-te e clama, tu que não estás de parto; porque mais são os filhos da desolada do que os da que tem marido.

28 N ow we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

Ora vós, irmãos, sois filhos da promessa, como Isaque.

29 B ut, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.

Mas, como naquele tempo o que nasceu segundo a carne perseguia ao que nasceu segundo o Espírito, assim é também agora.

30 N evertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.”

Que diz, porém, a Escritura? Lança fora a escrava e seu filho, porque de modo algum o filho da escrava herdará com o filho da livre.

31 S o then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.

Pelo que, irmãos, não somos filhos da escrava, mas da livre.
