1 Е то имената на синовете на Израел, които дойдоха в Египет заедно с Яков; всеки дойде със семейството си:

¶ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; each one came in with his household.

2 Р увим, Симеон, Левий и Юда,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3 И сахар, Завулон и Вениамин,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4 Д ан и Нефталим, Гад и Асир.

Dan and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

5 В сички, които излязоха от чреслата на Яков, бяха седемдесет души; а Йосиф вече беше в Египет.

And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

6 И умря Йосиф, всичките му братя и цялото онова поколение.

And Joseph died and all his brethren and all that generation.

7 А потомците на Израел се наплодиха и размножиха, увеличиха се и толкова много се засилиха, че Египетската земя се изпълни с тях.

And the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly and multiplied and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

8 Т огава над Египет се възцари нов цар, който не познаваше Йосиф.

¶ Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.

9 Т ой каза на народа си: Вижте, този народ, израелтяните, са по-многобройни и по-силни от нас;

And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we.

10 н ека постъпим предвидливо спрямо тях, за да не се размножават, да не би в случай на война да се присъединят и те към неприятелите ни, да воюват против нас и да си отидат от земята ни.

Now, therefore, let us be wise concerning him, that he not multiply and it come to pass that when war comes, he shall also join with our enemies and fight against us and so leave the land.

11 З атова поставиха над тях разпоредници, които да ги измъчват с тежък труд; и те съградиха на фараоните Питом и Рамзес, градове за житници.

Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built the supply cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

12 Н о колкото повече ги измъчваха, толкова повече те се размножаваха и се разпростираха, така че египтяните се страхуваха от израелтяните.

But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew, so much that they loathed the sons of Israel.

13 З атова египтяните караха жестоко израелтяните да работят;

And the Egyptians made the sons of Israel serve with rigor,

14 о горчаваха живота им с тежка работа да правят кал и кирпичи и да вършат всякакъв вид полска работа - всички неща, които ги караха да работят, бяха много тежки.

and they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, making mortar and brick and in all manner of service in the field; all their service, in which they made them serve, was with rigor.

15 П ри това египетският цар заповяда на еврейските баби (от които едната се наричаше Шифра, а другата Фуа):

¶ And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and another named Puah;

16 К огато бабувате на еврейките и видите, че раждат, ако родят син, убивайте го, но ако родят дъщеря, тогава нека живее.

and he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women and see the sex, if it is a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.

17 Н о бабите се бояха от Бога и не правеха каквото им заповяда египетският цар, а оставяха живи мъжките деца.

But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them but gave the men children their lives.

18 Т огава египетският цар повика бабите и им каза: Защо оставяте живи мъжките деца?

And the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing and have given the men children their lives?

19 А те отговориха на фараона: Понеже еврейките не са като египтянките, защото са пъргави и раждат, преди бабите да дойдат при тях.

And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women, for they are lively and are delivered before the midwives come in unto them.

20 З атова Бог беше благосклонен към бабите. А народът се размножаваше и засилваше твърде много.

Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and waxed very mighty.

21 И понеже бабите се бояха от Бога, Той им даде собствени семейства.

And it came to pass because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

22 Т огава фараонът заповяда на целия си народ: Всеки син, който се роди на евреите, го хвърляйте в Нил, а всяка дъщеря оставяйте жива.

Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall give them their lives.
