1 N ow faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

А віра то підстава сподіваного, доказ небаченого.

2 F or by this, the elders obtained testimony.

Бо нею засвідчені старші були.

3 B y faith, we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible.

Вірою ми розуміємо, що віки Словом Божим збудовані, так що з невидимого сталось видиме.

4 B y faith, Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had testimony given to him that he was righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and through it he, being dead, still speaks.

Вірою Авель приніс Богові жертву кращу, як Каїн; нею засвідчений був, що він праведний, як Бог свідчив про дари його; нею, і вмерши, він ще промовляє.

5 B y faith, Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God.

Вірою Енох був перенесений на небо, щоб не бачити смерти; і його не знайшли, бо Бог переніс його. Бо раніш, як його перенесено, він був засвідчений, що Богові він догодив.

6 W ithout faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

Догодити ж без віри не можна. І той, хто до Бога приходить, мусить вірувати, що Він є, а тим, хто шукає Його, Він дає нагороду.

7 B y faith, Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared a ship for the saving of his house, through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

Вірою Ной, як дістав був об'явлення про те, чого ще не бачив, побоявшись, зробив ковчега, щоб дім свій спасти; нею світ засудив він, і став спадкоємцем праведности, що з віри вона.

8 B y faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.

Вірою Авраам, покликаний на місце, яке мав прийняти в спадщину, послухався та й пішов, не відаючи, куди йде.

9 B y faith, he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.

Вірою він перебував на Землі Обіцяній, як на чужій, і проживав у наметах з Ісаком та Яковом, співспадкоємцями тієї ж обітниці,

10 F or he looked for the city which has the foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

бо чекав він міста, що має підвалини, що Бог його будівничий та творець.

11 B y faith, even Sarah herself received power to conceive, and she bore a child when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.

Вірою й Сара сама дістала силу прийняти насіння, і породила понад час свого віку, бо вірним вважала Того, Хто обітницю дав.

12 T herefore as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as innumerable as the sand which is by the sea shore, were fathered by one man, and him as good as dead.

Тому й від одного, та ще змертвілого, народилось так багато, як зорі небесні й пісок незчисленний край моря.

13 T hese all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and embraced them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Усі вони повмирали за вірою, не одержавши обітниць, але здалека бачили їх, і повітали, і вірували в них, та визнавали, що вони на землі чужаниці й приходьки.

14 F or those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.

Бо ті, що говорять таке, виявляють, що шукають батьківщини.

15 I f indeed they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had enough time to return.

І коли б вони пам'ятали ту, що вийшли з неї, то мали б були час повернутись.

16 B ut now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Та бажають вони тепер кращої, цебто небесної, тому й Бог не соромиться їх, щоб звати Себе їхнім Богом, бо Він приготував їм місто.

17 B y faith, Abraham, being tested, offered up Isaac. Yes, he who had gladly received the promises was offering up his one and only son;

Вірою Авраам, випробовуваний, привів був на жертву Ісака, і, мавши обітницю, приніс однородженого,

18 e ven he to whom it was said, “your offspring will be accounted as from Isaac”;

що йому було сказано: В Ісакові буде насіння тобі.

19 c oncluding that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Figuratively speaking, he also did receive him back from the dead.

Бо він розумів, що Бог має силу й воскресити з мертвих, тому й одержав його на прообраз.

20 B y faith, Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come.

Вірою в майбутнє поблагословив Ісак Якова та Ісава.

21 B y faith, Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.

Вірою Яків, умираючи, поблагословив кожного сина Йосипового, і схилився на верх свого жезла.

22 B y faith, Joseph, when his end was near, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave instructions concerning his bones.

Вірою Йосип, умираючи, згадав про вихід синів Ізраїлевих та про кості свої заповів.

23 B y faith, Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

Вірою Мойсей, як родився, переховувався батьками своїми три місяці, бо вони бачили, що гарне дитя, і не злякались наказу царевого.

24 B y faith, Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,

Вірою Мойсей, коли виріс, відрікся зватися сином дочки фараонової.

25 c hoosing rather to share ill treatment with God’s people, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time;

Він хотів краще страждати з народом Божим, аніж мати дочасну гріховну потіху.

26 a ccounting the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

Він наругу Христову вважав за більше багатство, ніж скарби єгипетські, бо він озирався на Божу нагороду.

27 B y faith, he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

Вірою він покинув Єгипет, не злякавшися гніву царевого, бо він був непохитний, як той, хто Невидимого бачить.

28 B y faith, he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.

Вірою справив він Пасху й покроплення крови, щоб їх не торкнувся той, хто погубив первороджених.

29 B y faith, they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to do so, they were swallowed up.

Вірою вони перейшли Червоне море, немов суходолом, на що спокусившись єгиптяни, потопились.

30 B y faith, the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encircled for seven days.

Вірою впали єрихонські мури по семиденнім обходженні їх.

31 B y faith, Rahab the prostitute, didn’t perish with those who were disobedient, having received the spies in peace.

Вірою блудниця Рахав не згинула з невірними, коли з миром прийняла вивідувачів.

32 W hat more shall I say? For the time would fail me if I told of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets;

І що ще скажу? Бо не стане часу мені, щоб оповідати про Гедеона, Варака, Самсона, Ефтая, Давида й Самуїла та про пророків,

33 w ho, through faith subdued kingdoms, worked out righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,

що вірою царства побивали, правду чинили, одержували обітниці, пащі левам загороджували,

34 q uenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, grew mighty in war, and caused foreign armies to flee.

силу огненну гасили, утікали від вістря меча, зміцнялись від слабости, хоробрі були на війні, обертали в розтіч полки чужоземців;

35 W omen received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, not accepting their deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.

жінки діставали померлих своїх із воскресіння; а інші бували скатовані, не прийнявши визволення, щоб отримати краще воскресіння;

36 O thers were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment.

а інші дізнали наруги та рани, а також кайдани й в'язниці.

37 T hey were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

Камінням побиті бували, допитувані, перепилювані, умирали, зарубані мечем, тинялися в овечих та козячих шкурах, збідовані, засумовані, витерпілі.

38 ( of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth.

Ті, що світ не вартий був їх, тинялися по пустинях та горах, і по печерах та проваллях земних.

39 T hese all, having had testimony given to them through their faith, didn’t receive the promise,

І всі вони, одержавши засвідчення вірою, обітниці не прийняли,

40 G od having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

бо Бог передбачив щось краще про нас, щоб вони не без нас досконалість одержали.
