1 B ut when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

(3-33) І сталося, як почув Санваллат, що ми будуємо того мура, то він запалився гнівом, і дуже розгнівався, і сміявся з юдеїв.

2 H e spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, since they are burned?”

(3-34) І говорив він перед своїми братами та самарійським військом і сказав: Що це роблять ці мізерні юдеї? Чи їм це позоставлять? Чи будуть вони приносити жертву? Чи закінчать цього дня? Чи оживлять вони ці каміння з куп пороху, а вони ж попалені?

3 N ow Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, “What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall.”

(3-35) А аммонітянин Товійя був при ньому й сказав: Та й що вони будують? Якщо вийде лисиця, то вона зробить дірку в їхній камінній стіні!...

4 “ Hear, our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, give them up for a plunder in a land of captivity;

(3-36) Почуй, Боже наш, що ми стали погордою, і поверни їхню ганьбу на голову їхню, і дай їх на здобич у край полону!

5 d on’t cover their iniquity, and don’t let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have insulted the builders.”

(3-37) І не закрий їхньої провини, а їхній гріх нехай не буде стертий з-перед лиця Твого, бо вони образили будівничих!

6 S o we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height: for the people had a mind to work.

(3-38) І збудували ми того мура, і був пов'язаний увесь той мур аж до половини його. А серце народу було, щоб далі робити!

7 B ut when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be filled, then they were very angry;

(4-1) І сталося, як почув Санваллат, і Товійя, і араби, і аммонітяни, і ашдодяни, що направляється єрусалимський мур, що виломи в стіні стали затарасовуватися, то дуже запалилися гнівом.

8 a nd they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein.

(4-2) І змовилися вони всі разом, щоб іти воювати з Єрусалимом, та щоб учинити йому замішання.

9 B ut we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

(4-3) І ми молилися до нашого Бога, і поставили проти них сторожу вдень та вночі, перед ними.

10 J udah said, “The strength of the bearers of burdens is fading, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.”

(4-4) І сказав Юда: Ослабла сила носія, а звалищ багато, і ми не зможемо далі будувати мура!...

11 O ur adversaries said, “They shall not know, neither see, until we come in among them, and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”

(4-5) А наші ненависники говорили: Вони не знатимуть і не побачать, як ми прийдемо до середини їх, і позабиваємо їх, та й спинимо працю!

12 W hen the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”

(4-6) І сталося, як приходили ті юдеяни, що сиділи при них, то говорили нам про це разів десять, зо всіх місць, де вони пробували.

13 T herefore set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places, I set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

(4-7) Тоді поставив я сторожу здолу того місця за муром у печерах. І поставив я народ за їхніми родами, з їхніми мечами, їхніми ратищами та їхніми луками.

14 I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them! Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”

(4-8) І розглянув я це, і встав і сказав я до шляхетних, і до заступників, і до решти народу: Не бійтеся перед ними! Згадайте Господа великого та грізного, і воюйте за ваших братів, ваших синів, дочок ваших, жінок ваших та за доми ваші!

15 W hen our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, all of us returned to the wall, everyone to his work.

(4-9) І сталося, як почули наші вороги, що нам те відоме, то Господь зламав їхній задум, і всі ми вернулися до муру, кожен до праці своєї.

16 F rom that time forth, half of my servants worked in the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

(4-10) І було від того дня, що половина моїх юнаків робили працю, а половина їх міцно тримала списи, щити, і луки та панцері, а зверхники стояли позад Юдиного дому.

17 T hey all built the wall and those who bore burdens loaded themselves; everyone with one of his hands worked in the work, and with the other held his weapon;

(4-11) Будівничі працювали на мурі, а носії наладовували тягар, вони однією рукою робили працю, а однією міцно тримали списа...

18 a nd the builders, everyone wore his sword at his side, and so built. He who sounded the trumpet was by me.

(4-12) А в кожного будівничого його меч був прив'язаний на стегнах його, і так вони будували, а біля мене був сурмач.

19 I said to the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and large, and we are separated on the wall, one far from another.

(4-13) І сказав я до шляхетних, до заступників та до решти народу: Праця велика й простора, а ми повідділювані на мурі, далеко один від одного.

20 W herever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally there to us. Our God will fight for us.”

(4-14) Тому то в місце, де почуєте голос сурми, туди негайно збирайтеся до нас. Бог наш буде воювати для нас!

21 S o we worked in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.

(4-15) І так ми робили працю, і половина їх міцно тримала списи від сходу ранньої зорі аж до появлення зір.

22 L ikewise at the same time said I to the people, “Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day.”

(4-16) Також того часу сказав я до народу: Кожен з юнаком своїм нехай ночують у середині Єрусалиму, і будуть вони для нас уночі сторожею, а вдень на працю.

23 S o neither I, nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes. Everyone took his weapon to the water.

(4-17) І ні я, ані брати мої, ані юнаки мої, ані сторожі, що були за мною, ми не здіймали своєї одежі, кожен мав свою зброю при своєму стегні.
