1 B ut when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

»Cuando Sambalat supo que estábamos reconstruyendo las murallas, se puso furioso y se burló de nosotros.

2 H e spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, since they are burned?”

Luego fue a hablar con sus compañeros y con el ejército de Samaria, y les dijo: “Y estos pobres judíos, ¿qué creen que están haciendo? ¿Vamos a permitir que vuelvan a ofrecer sus sacrificios? ¿Acaso creen que acabarán de reconstruir en un día? ¿O que van a recoger de las cenizas las piedras que fueron reducidas a polvo?”

3 N ow Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, “What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall.”

»A su lado estaba Tobías el amonita, quien decía: “La muralla que están reconstruyendo, ¡con el solo peso de una zorra se vendrá abajo!” Oración de Nehemías

4 “ Hear, our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, give them up for a plunder in a land of captivity;

»Dios nuestro, escucha cómo nos menosprecian, y haz que su menosprecio recaiga sobre ellos. ¡Que sean el botín de quienes se los lleven cautivos!

5 d on’t cover their iniquity, and don’t let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have insulted the builders.”

No pases por alto su maldad, ni perdones su pecado, pues se enfurecen contra nosotros al ver que estamos reconstruyendo.

6 S o we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height: for the people had a mind to work.

Hemos reconstruido la muralla hasta la mitad de su altura; casi hemos terminado la obra porque tu pueblo tiene animó para restaurarla. A Dios rogando...

7 B ut when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be filled, then they were very angry;

»Cuando Sambalat y Tobías, y los árabes, los amonitas y los habitantes de Asdod se enteraron de que estábamos reconstruyendo las murallas de Jerusalén, y de que estábamos cerrando sus brechas, se enojaron muchísimo,

8 a nd they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein.

y se pusieron de acuerdo para atacarnos y destruir la ciudad de Jerusalén.

9 B ut we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

Entonces oramos a nuestro Dios, pero también pusimos guardias de día y de noche.

10 J udah said, “The strength of the bearers of burdens is fading, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.”

Luego, la gente de Judá nos dijo: “Los que limpian los escombros ya están cansados. ¡Hay tanto que limpiar, que no podemos seguir reconstruyendo!”

11 O ur adversaries said, “They shall not know, neither see, until we come in among them, and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”

»Supimos que nuestros enemigos estaban pensando entrar a la ciudad, y tomarnos por sorpresa y matarnos, para que no pudiéramos concluir la obra.

12 W hen the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”

Y cuando llegaban a Jerusalén los judíos que vivían en las ciudades de nuestros enemigos, nos repetían lo mismo muchas veces: “No importa de dónde ustedes vengan, ellos los van a atacar.”

13 T herefore set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places, I set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

»Armé entonces al pueblo con espadas, lanzas y arcos, y lo repartí por familias en las partes bajas de la ciudad, y detrás de las murallas y en los espacios abiertos.

14 I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them! Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”

Luego, me reuní con los hombres importantes del pueblo y con los oficiales del templo, y con el pueblo en general, y les dije: “No tengan miedo de esa gente. Recuerden que el Señor es grande y temible. Luchemos por defender a nuestros hermanos, nuestros hijos, nuestras hijas y nuestras esposas; ¡luchemos por nuestros hogares!”

15 W hen our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, all of us returned to the wall, everyone to his work.

»Cuando nuestros enemigos supieron lo que habíamos decidido hacer, y que Dios había desbaratado sus planes, regresamos a la muralla para continuar con nuestra tarea.

16 F rom that time forth, half of my servants worked in the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

A partir de ese día la mitad de los hombres trabajaba en la reconstrucción, mientras la otra mitad se mantenía vigilante con sus lanzas, escudos, arcos y corazas. Los jefes de todo Judá los apoyaban.

17 T hey all built the wall and those who bore burdens loaded themselves; everyone with one of his hands worked in the work, and with the other held his weapon;

Tanto los que reconstruían la muralla como los que acarreaban los escombros y los que cargaban el material, con una mano trabajaban y con la otra sostenían sus espadas.

18 a nd the builders, everyone wore his sword at his side, and so built. He who sounded the trumpet was by me.

Todos los que trabajaban en la reconstrucción llevaban la espada al cinto, y a mi lado estaba quien tocaba la trompeta.

19 I said to the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and large, and we are separated on the wall, one far from another.

»Luego me reuní con los hombres importantes y con los oficiales, y con todo el pueblo, y les dije: “La obra es muy grande y extensa, y nosotros estamos muy separados unos de otros a lo largo de toda la muralla.

20 W herever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally there to us. Our God will fight for us.”

Por eso, cuando oigan el toque de la trompeta, corran a reunirse con nosotros, que nuestro Dios peleará por nosotros.”

21 S o we worked in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.

Y así, desde la salida del sol hasta que aparecían las estrellas trabajábamos en la obra, mientras la mitad de nosotros se mantenía lanza en mano.

22 L ikewise at the same time said I to the people, “Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day.”

Al resto del pueblo le dije: “Quédense todos dentro de Jerusalén, cada uno con sus criados; durante la noche, vigilen la ciudad; y durante el día trabajen en la obra.”

23 S o neither I, nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes. Everyone took his weapon to the water.

»Mis hermanos y mis criados, y los centinelas que me seguían, trabajábamos sin descanso. Ninguno de nosotros se quitaba la ropa, a no ser para bañarse.
