1 “ Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine.

Con el fuego se ha puesto fin a las tinieblas, y el hombre examina con detalle cada piedra que hay en esa densa oscuridad.

4 H e breaks open a shaft away from where people live. They are forgotten by the foot. They hang far from men, they swing back and forth.

Abre minas en lugares no habitados, en sitios donde nadie ha plantado el pie, y entran los mineros, balanceándose con sogas.

5 A s for the earth, out of it comes bread; Underneath it is turned up as it were by fire.

De la tierra se obtiene el alimento, y abajo de ella todo se convierte en fuego.

6 S apphires come from its rocks. It has dust of gold.

En su seno se encuentran zafiros, y aun el polvo de la tierra es oro.

7 T hat path no bird of prey knows, neither has the falcon’s eye seen it.

»Son lugares que las aves desconocen, y que jamás vieron los ojos de los buitres.

8 T he proud animals have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed by there.

Nunca pasaron por allí las fieras, ni tampoco el león feroz pisó ese lugar.

9 H e puts his hand on the flinty rock, and he overturns the mountains by the roots.

Con el duro pedernal en la mano, el hombre cava la raíz de las montañas.

10 H e cuts out channels among the rocks. His eye sees every precious thing.

Hace túneles en las rocas, y sus ojos descubren piedras preciosas.

11 H e binds the streams that they don’t trickle. The thing that is hidden he brings out to light.

Explora el lugar donde nacen los ríos, y saca a la luz muchas cosas escondidas.

12 “ But where shall wisdom be found? Where is the place of understanding?

»Pero ¿dónde se halla la sabiduría? ¿En qué lugar está la inteligencia?

13 M an doesn’t know its price; Neither is it found in the land of the living.

Nadie sabe lo que vale, pues no se halla en este mundo.

14 T he deep says, ‘It isn’t in me.’ The sea says, ‘It isn’t with me.’

El mar profundo dice: “Aquí no está”, y el océano asegura: “Yo no la tengo”.

15 I t can’t be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for its price.

La sabiduría no se compra con oro, ni su precio puede pagarse con plata.

16 I t can’t be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.

No se compra con oro de Ofir, ni con el precioso ónice, ni con el zafiro.

17 G old and glass can’t equal it, neither shall it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.

Ni los diamantes ni el oro se le comparan, ni se da a cambio de finas alhajas de oro.

18 N o mention shall be made of coral or of crystal. Yes, the price of wisdom is above rubies.

No se le comparan el coral y las perlas; La sabiduría es más valiosa que las piedras preciosas.

19 T he topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, Neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

20 W here then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding?

21 S eeing it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the birds of the sky.

22 D estruction and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’

23 “ God understands its way, and he knows its place.

»Sólo Dios sabe llegar hasta ella; sólo él sabe en dónde se halla.

24 F or he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole sky.

Con su mirada ve hasta los confines de la tierra, y ve también lo que pasa bajo el cielo.

25 H e establishes the force of the wind. Yes, he measures out the waters by measure.

Cuando Dios determinó el peso del viento, y midió el agua de mares y ríos;

26 W hen he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder;

cuando estableció una ley para las lluvias, y señaló la ruta de los relámpagos,

27 t hen he saw it, and declared it. He established it, yes, and searched it out.

vio a la sabiduría, que estaba allí, y la puso a prueba y reconoció su valor.

28 T o man he said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To depart from evil is understanding.’”

Entonces dijo a la humanidad: “El temor del Señor es la sabiduría. Quien se aparta del mal es inteligente.”»
