1 P aul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s chosen ones, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,

Yo, Pablo, siervo de Dios y apóstol de Jesucristo, según la fe de los escogidos de Dios y el conocimiento de la verdad que corresponde a la piedad,

2 i n hope of eternal life, which God, who can’t lie, promised before time began;

en la esperanza de la vida eterna, la cual Dios, que no miente, prometió desde antes del principio de los siglos,

3 b ut in his own time revealed his word in the message with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior;

y a su debido tiempo manifestó su palabra por medio de la predicación que me fue encomendada por mandato de Dios nuestro Salvador,

4 t o Titus, my true child according to a common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.

a Tito, verdadero hijo en nuestra fe común: Recibe gracia, misericordia y paz, de Dios el Padre y del Señor Jesucristo, nuestro Salvador. Requisitos de ancianos y obispos

5 I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking, and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you;

Por esto te dejé en Creta, para que corrigieras lo deficiente y establecieras ancianos en cada ciudad, tal y como yo te mandé:

6 i f anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, who are not accused of loose or unruly behavior.

ancianos irreprensibles, maridos de una sola mujer y con hijos creyentes, que no estén acusados de disolución ni de rebeldía.

7 F or the overseer must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-pleasing, not easily angered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain;

Porque es necesario que el obispo, como administrador de Dios, sea irreprensible, no soberbio ni iracundo, ni afecto al vino, ni pendenciero, ni codicioso de ganancias deshonestas,

8 b ut given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober minded, fair, holy, self-controlled;

sino hospitalario, amante de lo bueno, sobrio, justo, santo, dueño de sí mismo,

9 h olding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict those who contradict him.

apegado a la palabra fiel, tal y como ha sido enseñada, para que también pueda exhortar con sana enseñanza y convencer a los que contradicen.

10 F or there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,

Porque aún hay muchos rebeldes, que hablan de vanidades y de engaños, especialmente los de la circuncisión,

11 w hose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain’s sake.

a los cuales es preciso tapar la boca. Éstos trastornan casas enteras, y a cambio de ganancias deshonestas enseñan lo que no conviene.

12 O ne of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and idle gluttons.”

Uno de ellos, que es su propio profeta, dijo: «Los cretenses son siempre mentirosos, malas bestias y glotones ociosos.»

13 T his testimony is true. For this cause, reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,

Éste es un testimonio verdadero; así que repréndelos duramente, para que sean sanos en la fe

14 n ot paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.

y no atiendan a fábulas judaicas, ni a mandamientos de hombres que se apartan de la verdad.

15 T o the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

Para los puros, todas las cosas son puras; pero para los corruptos e incrédulos nada es puro, pues hasta su mente y su conciencia están corrompidas;

16 T hey profess that they know God, but by their deeds they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

dicen conocer a Dios, pero con los hechos lo niegan, pues son odiosos y rebeldes, reprobables en cuanto a toda buena obra.
