1 M y brothers, don’t hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.

Hermanos míos, ustedes que tienen fe en nuestro glorioso Señor Jesucristo, no deben hacer diferencias entre las personas.

2 F or if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue, and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in;

Puede darse el caso de que al lugar donde ustedes se reúnen llegue alguien vestido con ropa elegante y con anillos de oro, y llegue también un pobre vestido con ropa andrajosa.

3 a nd you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing, and say, “Sit here in a good place”; and you tell the poor man, “Stand there,” or “Sit by my footstool”;

Si ustedes reciben gustosos al que viste la ropa elegante, y le dicen: «Venga usted, siéntese aquí, que es un buen lugar», pero al pobre le dicen: «Tú, quédate allá de pie, o siéntate en el suelo»,

4 h aven’t you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

¿acaso no están discriminando entre ustedes y haciendo juicios malintencionados?

5 L isten, my beloved brothers. Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?

Amados hermanos míos, escuchen esto: ¿Acaso no ha escogido Dios a los pobres de este mundo para que sean ricos en fe y herederos del reino que él ha prometido a los que lo aman?

6 B ut you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?

¡Pero ustedes han despreciado a los pobres! ¿Acaso no son los ricos quienes los explotan a ustedes, y quienes los llevan ante los tribunales?

7 D on’t they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?

¿Acaso no son ellos los que blasfeman contra el precioso nombre que fue invocado sobre ustedes?

8 H owever, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well.

Bien harán ustedes en cumplir la ley suprema de la Escritura: «Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo»;

9 B ut if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.

pero si ustedes hacen diferencia entre una persona y otra, cometen un pecado y son culpables ante la ley.

10 F or whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

Porque cualquiera que cumpla toda la ley, pero que falle en un solo mandato, ya es culpable de haber fallado en todos.

11 F or he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Porque el que dijo «No cometerás adulterio» también dijo «No matarás». Es decir, que alguien puede no cometer adulterio, pero si mata, ya ha violado la ley.

12 S o speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom.

Hablen y vivan como quienes van a ser juzgados por la ley que nos da libertad,

13 F or judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

pues a los que no tienen compasión de otros, tampoco se les tendrá compasión cuando sean juzgados, porque la compasión prevalece sobre el juicio. La fe sin obras es muerta

14 W hat good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?

Hermanos míos, ¿de qué sirve decir que se tiene fe, si no se tienen obras? ¿Acaso esa fe puede salvar?

15 A nd if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food,

Si un hermano o una hermana están desnudos, y no tienen el alimento necesario para cada día,

16 a nd one of you tells them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled”; and yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?

y alguno de ustedes les dice: «Vayan tranquilos; abríguense y coman hasta quedar satisfechos», pero no les da lo necesario para el cuerpo, ¿de qué sirve eso?

17 E ven so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.

Lo mismo sucede con la fe: si no tiene obras, está muerta.

18 Y es, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.

Pero alguien podría decir: «Tú tienes fe, y yo tengo obras. Muéstrame tu fe sin obras, y yo te mostraré mi fe por mis obras.»

19 Y ou believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.

Tú crees que Dios es uno, y haces bien. ¡Pues también los demonios lo creen, y tiemblan!

20 B ut do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?

¡No seas tonto! ¿Quieres pruebas de que la fe sin obras es muerta?

21 W asn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

¿Acaso nuestro padre Abrahán no fue justificado por las obras cuando ofreció a su hijo Isaac sobre el altar?

22 Y ou see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected;

¿No ves que la fe de Abrahán actuó juntamente con sus obras, y que su fe se perfeccionó por las obras?

23 a nd the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness”; and he was called the friend of God.

Y se cumplió la Escritura que dice: «Abrahán creyó a Dios, y eso le fue contado por justicia», por lo que fue llamado «amigo de Dios».

24 Y ou see then that by works, a man is justified, and not only by faith.

Como pueden ver, podemos ser justificados por las obras, y no solamente por la fe.

25 I n the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?

Lo mismo sucedió con Rajab, la prostituta. ¿Acaso no fue justificada por las obras, cuando hospedó a los mensajeros y los ayudó a escapar por otro camino?

26 F or as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.

Pues así como el cuerpo está muerto si no tiene espíritu, también la fe está muerta si no tiene obras.
