1 T he man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with Yahweh’s help.”

Adán conoció a Eva, su mujer, y ella concibió y dio a luz a Caín, y dijo: «Por la voluntad del Señor he adquirido un varón.»

2 A gain she gave birth, to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

Después dio a luz a Abel, hermano de Caín. Abel era pastor de ovejas, y Caín cultivaba la tierra.

3 A s time passed, Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground.

Andando el tiempo, sucedió que Caín llevó al Señor una ofrenda del fruto de la tierra.

4 A bel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. Yahweh respected Abel and his offering,

Y Abel también llevó algunos de los primogénitos de sus ovejas, de los mejores entre ellas. Y el Señor miró con agrado a Abel y a su ofrenda,

5 b ut he didn’t respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.

pero no miró con agrado a Caín ni a su ofrenda. Y Caín se enojó mucho, y decayó su semblante.

6 Y ahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?

Entonces el Señor le dijo a Caín: «¿Por qué estás enojado? ¿Por qué ha decaído tu semblante?

7 I f you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”

Si haces lo bueno, ¿acaso no serás enaltecido? Pero, si no lo haces, el pecado está listo para dominarte. Sin embargo, su deseo lo llevará a ti, y tú lo dominarás.»

8 C ain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” While they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.

Dijo entonces Caín a su hermano Abel: «Vayamos al campo.» Y sucedió que, mientras estaban ellos en el campo, Caín se levantó contra su hermano Abel, y lo mató.

9 Y ahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Y el Señor le dijo a Caín: «¿Dónde está tu hermano Abel?» Y él respondió: «No lo sé. ¿Acaso soy yo el guardián de mi hermano?»

10 Y ahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.

Y el Señor le dijo: «¿Qué es lo que has hecho? Desde la tierra, la voz de la sangre de tu hermano me pide que le haga justicia.

11 N ow you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

Ahora, pues, ¡maldito serás por parte de la tierra, que abrió su boca para recibir de tus manos la sangre de tu hermano!

12 F rom now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”

Cuando labres la tierra, no te volverá a dar su fuerza. Y andarás por la tierra errante y extranjero.»

13 C ain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.

Caín le dijo al Señor: «Mi castigo es muy grande para poder soportarlo.

14 B ehold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”

Tú me echas hoy de la tierra, y tendré que esconderme de tu presencia. Errante y extranjero andaré por la tierra, y sucederá que cualquiera que me encuentre, me matará.»

15 Y ahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.

Pero el Señor le respondió: «Pues cualquiera que mate a Caín será castigado siete veces.» Y el Señor puso en Caín una señal, para que cualquiera que lo encontrara no lo matara.

16 C ain left Yahweh’s presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Caín salió de la presencia del Señor y habitó en la tierra de Nod, al oriente de Edén.

17 C ain knew his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Enoch. He built a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

Y conoció Caín a su mujer, y ella concibió y dio a luz a Enoc. Entonces edificó una ciudad, y llamó a esa ciudad Enoc, como el nombre de su hijo.

18 T o Enoch was born Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.

Y a Enoc le nació Irad. Irad engendró a Mejuyael, Mejuyael engendró a Metusael, y Metusael engendró a Lamec.

19 L amech took two wives: the name of the first one was Adah, and the name of the second one was Zillah.

Y Lamec tomó para sí dos mujeres; una de ellas se llamaba Ada; la otra, Silá.

20 A dah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.

Ada dio a luz a Jabal, que fue el padre de los que habitan en tiendas y crían ganados.

21 H is brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe.

El nombre de su hermano era Jubal, que fue el padre de todos los que tocan arpa y flauta.

22 Z illah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron. Tubal Cain’s sister was Naamah.

También Silá dio a luz a Tubal Caín, artífice de toda obra de bronce y de hierro; y la hermana de Tubal Caín fue Noamá.

23 L amech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.

Dijo entonces Lamec a sus mujeres: «Ada y Silá, escuchen mi voz; Mujeres de Lamec, atiendan mis palabras. Si soy herido, mataré a un varón; Si soy golpeado, mataré a un joven.

24 I f Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times.”

Y si Caín será vengado siete veces, Lamec será vengado setenta veces siete.»

25 A dam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, “for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”

Adán conoció de nuevo a su mujer, y ella dio a luz un hijo, al que puso por nombre Set, pues dijo: «Dios me ha dado otro hijo en lugar de Abel, a quien mató Caín.»

26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on Yahweh’s name.

También a Set le nació un hijo, al que puso por nombre Enós. Desde entonces comenzó a invocarse el nombre del Señor.
