1 T he words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

2 H anani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men out of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

recibí la visita de Jananí, uno de mis hermanos, y de algunos varones de Judá. Al preguntarles por los judíos que habían escapado con vida del cautiverio, y por Jerusalén,

3 T hey said to me, “The remnant who are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”

me dijeron: “Los cautivos que quedaron con vida están muy mal y pasando por muchas vergüenzas; la muralla de Jerusalén está en ruinas, y las puertas de la ciudad fueron quemadas.”

4 W hen I heard these words, I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,

»Cuando escuché esto, me senté a llorar y durante varios días me puse en duelo; y ayuné y oré al Dios de los cielos.

5 a nd said, “I beg you, Yahweh, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments:

Le dije: “Señor, Dios de los cielos, tú eres fuerte, grande y temible. Cumples tu pacto y eres misericordioso con los que te aman y guardan tus mandamientos. Yo te ruego

6 L et your ear now be attentive, and your eyes open, that you may listen to the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants while I confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Yes, I and my father’s house have sinned.

que prestes atención a las súplicas que de día y de noche te hace este humilde siervo tuyo en favor de Israel. Reconozco que tu pueblo Israel ha pecado contra ti, lo mismo que mis antepasados y yo.

7 W e have dealt very corruptly against you, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances, which you commanded your servant Moses.

Nuestra corrupción ha llegado a los extremos, pues no hemos cumplido con los mandamientos, leyes y estatutos que le diste a tu siervo Moisés.

8 “ Remember, I beg you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you trespass, I will scatter you abroad among the peoples;

”Recuerda que ya le habías advertido a Moisés, que si nosotros llegáramos a pecar, tú nos dispersarías entre las naciones,

9 b ut if you return to me, and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts were in the uttermost part of the heavens, yet will I gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there.’

pero que si nos arrepentíamos y te buscábamos y cumplíamos tus mandamientos, y los poníamos por obra, tú nos harías volver y nos llevarías a la tierra que elegiste como residencia de tu nombre, aun cuando nos hubieras dispersado hasta los confines de los cielos.

10 “ Now these are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power, and by your strong hand.

”Señor, somos tu pueblo; somos tus siervos. ¡Tú, con tu gran poder y tu brazo poderoso, nos liberaste de la esclavitud!

11 L ord, I beg you, let your ear be attentive now to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who delight to fear your name; and please prosper your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Now I was cup bearer to the king.

Yo te ruego, Señor, que prestes atención a las súplicas de este humilde siervo tuyo, y a las de todos tus siervos, que honran tu nombre. Concédele a este siervo tuyo tener éxito ante el rey, para que me conceda lo que le solicite.” »En esos días yo era el copero del rey.
